Good point, we have a home crate for our ocelot on programs, if he choses that crate he always gets to go home, we are hoping that gives him a voice. (We are very consistent with that consequence of chosing the home crate.)

In the past year we've made the switch from primarily holding our chinchillas for programs to crate training them to come out on a table. When they're out on the table we leave them with access to the crate and we're seen a lot great behavior from them since making the change
