its a bit difficult to hear Kate

40:12
Please put any questions in the chat as we go along

40:44
It’s amazing that they grow like that even when the cars / pollution are so close!

43:19
Will the slides be made available?

50:02
Could you please ensure that your name in the participants list identifies you as first name, last name

54:55
For more information on Plantlife's verge campaign go to https://plantlife.love-wildflowers.org.uk/roadvergecampaign

55:11
Thanks, Andy! Brilliant projects

55:40
The Wales YouTube video that Kate mentioned can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=er1zAnMojR8

56:53
That’s so funny that you have to make it look like it’s managed!

57:09
This year the season seems to be about 3 weeks late so no mow may is really no mow june. How can you persuade verge cutters to pay attention to the real life conditions year on year?

59:38
great to see the press writing about this too

Are there any Councillors representing Petersfield wards listening to this?

01:03:06
yes

01:03:09
Yes.

01:04:05
Or Alton?

01:04:06
Thanks, Peter - you will have a major communication and selling job ....

Do verges attract larger wildlife which in turn become a danger to road traffic?

01:09:12
New Leaf! Wonderful!

01:10:27
Go see: https://newleafalresford.org/

01:10:35
How does the monitoring work? Surveys?

01:11:26
How can I find out who manages the verges near me?

01:16:53
new Arlesford bypass - the whole length between the two roundabouts gets mown to death every year as does the whole of the wide grass areas in Ropley. There is a huge opportunity to improve these areas. Why is this low hanging fruit not in the plan?

01:19:59
What is your opinion on ragwort and does this need different management?

01:20:01
Jane the A31 bypass comes under Hampshire County Council management. They have made adjustments and are working with Plantlife. I think they are down to 2 cuts per annum but safety cuts are also made.

01:23:16
If you would like to keep an eye on what’s happening in Alresford keep an eye on the New Leaf website for updates: www.newleafalresford.org or join our Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/456770654995996

01:28:58
nice

01:30:59
excellent

01:41:32
could you explain a little more about grasses being useful for moth species as I thought they were wind pollinated so pollen wouldn't be useful for insects?

01:44:47
Could any of the speakers apply the principles of verge management to people's lawns in their front or back gardens - any quick comments about what homeowners can practically do?

01:45:14
Thanks Melanie!

01:45:41
Wow that’s beautiful!

great idea to complain to EDHC website!!

01:48:30
it’s there!

01:48:45
i’ve just completed it :)

01:48:50
is 1 concerned or 10

01:48:58
10 is concerned

01:49:05
It’s a pop up

01:49:26
Is 10 high or low concern

01:49:29
I think you need to do all the questions then submit

01:49:35
i think 10 is concerned

01:49:39
Hi All, worth looking into HIWWT Waste of Space Campaign (https://www.hiwwt.org.uk/waste-space) for an opportunity to highlight spaces for improvement for biodiversity.

01:49:39
I can’t go higher than 8 but would like to put 10

01:49:48
Scroll down :)

01:50:10
It won’t let me scroll down further that 8

01:50:15
I've presumed 10 is greatest concern?

01:50:34
hold your curser over it and scroll down - try that

01:50:36
Managing Grassland Road Verges (Plantlife) (2019)A best practical guide for highways managers, road engineers, operations managers, landscape architects and all those engaged with verge management and creation. It covers those aspects previously described in the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges wildflower handbook and focuses on the management of lowland and upland grassland verges.Download at https://www.plantlife.org.uk/application/files/3315/7063/5411/Managing_grassland_road_verges_Singles.pdf

01:50:52
not entirely relevant but can we encourage use of peat-free composts only?

01:51:38
I would like to ask a question about safety and uncut verges… highways have been heard to say that the verges need to be cut as if they are left the lack of visibility can be a safety issue..

01:52:21
I think that there is a case to be made which says that people drive more slowly when they can see less clearly - has anyone had any experience of using this argument with highways?

01:52:37
Do you have any examples of how these interventions are set out in Neighbourhood Plan Policy? We have several NDPs in draft stage and would like to include them.

01:52:43
Is it best to let what wants to grow grow or is it worth putting in the effort with plug plants or seeds?

01:54:59
Relating to my last question we are also looking to include guidance in Design Guide SPDs and Design Codes so any advice welcomed!

01:57:10

Are there any other good species to introduce like yellow-rattle. Red bartsia is also a hemi-parasite of grasses but you do not hear it being planted to control grasses

02:01:45
Huge problem re councils- and who to contact initially as a resident who is interested in these initiatives.

02:03:32
This sounds like a naive question but has anyone got any tips about persuading a council focused on "tidiness" to engage with residents aspirations for no mowing. We've had some Cllrsa supporting but they don't feel able to move on with seniot cllrs and officers

02:03:35
There’s more tips about who to contact/how to get started in the Good Verge Guide

02:03:52
Great about the slides. And the links. Thanks
