Yes @Karlee
Everett Hanna, CWB
11:27
Yes
Everett Hanna, CWB
15:48
We've had our curriculum reviewed here at Lethbridge College. The process was very useful.
Walter Andreeff
16:22
Good to know Everett. WA in north AB
Shanon Pruden
17:28
Does this mean you do not have to have a degree to apply for the Associate position... just 812 credit hours? So could one apply before they are done with their degree?
Andrea Shipley
18:18
For either certification, is there a threshold of time as a professional wildlife biologist which would overcome a lacking in specific credit hours in categories for the educational requirements? IE - I've been a pro for many years and I'm not going back to school just for a certification.
Steven Castleberry
18:44
You have to have a completed BS to apply, regardless of the number of credits.
Everett Hanna, CWB
18:45
Or provincial/territorial positions...
Keith Pawelek
19:38
Is a certified stamped transcript required?
Steven Castleberry
20:04
You can be considered for CWB with 20 years of professional experience, even if you are lacking coursework.
Jenny Prenosil
20:18
what if you are lacking ONE credit hour in ONE of the categories?
Dr. Karmen Hollis-Etter
20:28
jenny
Dr. Karmen Hollis-Etter
20:56
jenny - can sub experience for 1 credit if you have an area of research, field or work expertise
Mary Greagan
20:57
If your a master's but haven't defended yet, can you still submit an approved abstract and be considered?
Matthew Phillippi
21:00
Does a 401 series qualify for educational requirements. I am a state biologist for NRCS but have a BS degree in Range Management.
LeeAnn Harris
21:14
Would a restoration ecology course count towards botany?
Dave Ealey
21:44
How can retired individuals pursue a CWB?
Shanon Pruden
21:47
Good to see that those requirements are exactly what the KY Wildlife Biologist job requires as well!
Karen Beatty
22:16
Does every member on the CRB review each application?
Dr. Karmen Hollis-Etter
22:38
We have created an actual an AWB track under our wildlife bio program which fulfills all the AWB course requirements so students do not have to guess as to courses to fulfill requirements. We have worked with National TWS throughout the process to help us designate courses properly
Laura Carbone
23:18
are all these courses required? or do we need a few of them?
Jamila Blake
23:21
All transcripts must be official, but the Board will accept scanned copies
David Riley
23:27
Do you have to have the actual course descriptions from the applicants college course catelog or are you able to write your own descriptions if the course catelog descripitons cannot be located?
Dr. Karmen Hollis-Etter
23:44
need to fulfill all course requirements or sub with some experience in a limited fashion
Gabriela Palomo
24:02
can I apply if I studied outside of the US?
Shanon Pruden
24:12
Would a RNG course count in the Botany section?
Dr. Karmen Hollis-Etter
24:12
I would suggest catalog descriptions or course syllabus descriptions
Dr. Karmen Hollis-Etter
24:40
we used catalog descriptions to set up our AWB track here
Max Larreur
24:42
can one class (3 credit hours) cover multiple education requirements (statistics and wildlife management for example)? so would it cover 3 credit requirements for each section?
Jamila Blake
24:45
If you are missing 1 semester hour in a category, that can typically be addressed through professional or non-traditional experience
Kristina Burnette
24:58
Does Master Naturalist courses count by the state?
MANISHA .
25:07
could you tell us course related to chemistry?
Dr. Karmen Hollis-Etter
25:25
max you can divide one course once by credit hours for multiple categories in AWB
Catie Neal
25:40
What options are available if we are lacking a few hours in one of the educational requirements category?
Max Larreur
25:45
thank you
Dr. Karmen Hollis-Etter
26:02
catie - see chat string for answer
Brianna Saylor
26:04
does economics count for quantitative science?
Karlee Cork
26:04
Do foreign languages count as communication courses?
Adrian Naveda
26:06
Education curriculum in Latin America is different than here. I did not take specific courses on ornithology, herpetology or mammalogy. How will the certification process handle this?
Laura Carbone
26:14
would wildlife law count
Christopher Carrillo
26:15
How do you substitute experience for course work if course work was not obtained. Example would be Policy, Administration, and Law.
Dr. Karmen Hollis-Etter
26:25
laura - wildlife law counts in law section
Laura Carbone
26:33
okay thank you!
Dr. Karmen Hollis-Etter
26:40
Christopher - answer in chat string
Katelyn McDow
28:49
For AWB, if you have classes that fit into multiple requirements, should you only list it once? Or can you use it for multiple times to fill in other requirements?
Danielle Cordani
29:09
can a course count twice to satisfy two requirements
Dr. Karmen Hollis-Etter
29:33
katelyn - answer in chat string. course credits can be divided once between 2 catagories
Kristina Burnette
30:06
Does Master Naturalist courses apply since they are provided by state?
Catie Neal
30:36
Do you need to be an Associate before you can get the CWB?
Rob Blye
30:42
I have 20+ years of experience but mostly not within the last ten years. I retired in 2013 but want to get certified. Am I too late?
Kelly Mildebrandt
31:05
Can classes acquired for red card fire certification count towards AWB/CWB cert?
Adam Jacobs
31:10
Just a note...I had to fight tooth and nail with OPM to be verified that my Wildlife and Fisheries degree qualified for their 0486 (biologist) requirements. OPM does not permit splitting of course credits. Is that something that can be addressed?
Dr. Karmen Hollis-Etter
31:36
adam - splitting courses discussed in this chat string
Dr. Karmen Hollis-Etter
31:47
If you are missing 1 semester hour in a category, that can typically be addressed through professional or non-traditional experience
Cheyenne Ginther
32:27
You just have to have at least one course listed in every category I believe.
Brendon Quinton
33:10
So if we have an abstract of an accepted thesis, is the official transcript still also required?
Dr. Karmen Hollis-Etter
33:18
Cheyenne - it is credit hour requirements per section not just 1 course. If some course fills all the credit hours then it should work
Courtney King
33:26
I have the opportunity to determine what I will name my research credits for my Master's thesis. Are there any tips for how to name them to show that I did work related to one or more of the category requirements, or is it entirely dependent on my abstract?
Carlee Wersal
33:41
Once I have completed all of the educational requirements is there a time frame that I have to submit my AWB application within?
Tanya Iretskaia
33:56
If lacking courses - will taking them from, say, Coursera help?
Dr. Karmen Hollis-Etter
34:38
Carlee - for AWB if you submit 6 months after degree awarded get a discount on application fee
Elizabeth Shadle
35:25
How much is the application fee if you don't submit within 6 months of a degree?
Carlee Wersal
35:30
That's nice! But I am not required to apply within that time right?
Rachel Brummet
35:54
Does dendrology count for botany/plant ID?
Lisa Dowling
36:07
Are there additional education requirements to advance from AWB to CWB?
Rachel Brummet
36:10
Never mind :)
Shanon Pruden
36:13
At OSU the taxonomy class is listed as a Rangeland class and not a botany class... will that be accepted?
Dr. Karmen Hollis-Etter
36:29
There was a Chemistry question - we have included chemistry such as principles of CHM 1, CHM 2, Organic Chm
Morgan Dobroski
36:29
What if you are already out of school and don’t have a specific course related to plant ID?
Dr. Karmen Hollis-Etter
36:48
mrogan - see experience discussion as sub in this chat string
Laura Carbone
37:08
Would Woody plants ID count instead of Botany? And what classes would be a substitute for Zoology?
Catie Neal
37:44
I took a Wildlife Law class in both my bachelors and masters program. could I could those credits 2 times?
Aubrey Greene
37:52
Would an Environmental Ethics course count towards the policy requirement?
Stacey Dolan
38:18
do graduate seminar or reading groups count towards the communications requirement?
Tanya Iretskaia
38:26
can RETIRED professional wildlife biologists (e.g. from DNR) be a reference?
Dr. Karmen Hollis-Etter
38:36
In the application at the top of each category it does give you some options; for example in botany can be general botany, plant anatomy, plant genetics, plant morphology, plant taxonomy, plant phys, and other botany course
Charles Cini
38:47
Can references be past wildlife biologists that are certified and have moved on with their career(IE supervisory position)?
Everett Hanna, CWB
39:08
We are also running a CWB mentor program now here in Canada
Dr. Karmen Hollis-Etter
39:08
Jamila is amazing everyone. She answers email questions all the time!
Lauren Pharr
39:29
For AWB can 1 reference just be the CWB? I'm sorry if I missed that.
Dr. Karmen Hollis-Etter
39:48
AWB needs 1 CWB reference. 2 others do not need to be CWB
Grant Koch
40:20
What qualifies as professional experience?
LeeAnn Harris
40:46
Can an AWB be a reference on a CWB application?
Dr. Karmen Hollis-Etter
41:15
Grant - Steven just answered your chat question
Dr. Karmen Hollis-Etter
41:35
LeeAnn - I believe so but you also need a CWB reference
Everett Hanna, CWB
41:35
Professional isn't the best word to use perhaps. I think it's more "technician" vs. "biologist" type experience.
Dr. Karmen Hollis-Etter
42:11
Everett, yes I agree, Steven just explained it the same way. Thank you. Karmen CWB
Mackenzie Su
42:48
Will AP course credit be counted or does the course work need to directly come from a university?
Lisa Elliott
43:17
Does a basic biology BA count for this?
Dr. Karmen Hollis-Etter
43:50
Lisa - Yes but then course work must also be applied.
Dr. Karmen Hollis-Etter
44:01
It is not just degree focused
Aimee Rockhill
44:15
How many credits for each degree can you use towards communications credit?
Derek Leask
44:18
Does professional experience prior to receiving an undergraduate degree count towards the required experience?
Lauren Pharr
44:32
Is there somewhere to take a plant ID course online? I only have general botany unfortunately. I am glad I tuned it, I had no idea Plant ID/taxonomy was required.
Andrew Jakes
44:46
Is post-doc research at a university considered as 'graduate research' or 'professional experience'?
Shanon Pruden
44:51
Question... do you all help with job placement resources once someone becomes and AWB or CWB?
Holly Ferreira
44:59
@Lauren - American Public University offers a Plant ID, Taxonomy, and Systematics course online!
William Dowie
45:08
there are extension courses in USA and Canada through the Master Gardening program. these are offered thru a college. they involve plant ID, taxonomy, botany... how do you treat these?
Dr. Karmen Hollis-Etter
45:14
Shannon - TWS has a listserve for jobs
Lauren Pharr
45:21
Thanks Holly!
Dr. Karmen Hollis-Etter
45:43
APU is also TWS recognized
Lisa Elliott
45:52
Is post-doc research at a university counted as 'professional experience'?
Iona Hennessy
45:52
If I have a class all about policy can a Human Dimensions class that talks about policy to a lesser degree count for policy?
Shanon Pruden
46:19
I did not know that APU was TWS recognized
Iona Hennessy
46:19
Will this webinar be available later to rewatch
Lauren Pharr
46:25
I missed that so It is required to use course descriptions from our school? Or we can add/make our own?
Holly Ferreira
46:51
APU used to give TWS members a 5% discount. I’m not sure if they still do or not, but it is worth looking into.
Dennis Brannen
47:07
for those of us who have been out of university for some time, what do you recommend is the best way to capture the course info for the application?
Shanon Pruden
47:47
Can you apply before graduation so that you can get certified around the same time for job hunting?
Lauren Pharr
48:09
What if we pay and submit our application, but some application materials may be missing or you need additional information...will you let us know?
Jessica Lang
48:24
Thank you for the excellent Webinar! This has been very helpful. I understand that a course cannot be counted twice (but can be split), however would a MSc Thesis be an exception? I.e. Count as communications 3 credits, as well as 3 credits for botany (if it has a heavy emphasis on plant taxonomy)?
Dani Christensen
48:49
Would an Environmental Ethics course that has a large writing component count best for Communications category or Law/Policy categories
Avantika D'Cruz
48:50
does a GIS course fulfill the educational requirement and if so which category?
Dr. Karmen Hollis-Etter
48:52
Lauren - Steven stated that catalog description, syllabus description but also can be supplemented with you own description. That is also my best recommendations
TC Walker
49:04
Sounds like a LOT of hoops and money for no benefit. If the degree meets the requirement why do we need a club to check off when an employer will be looking at all these materials anyway?
Daniel Gillies
49:19
Do Systematics courses count towards the Zoology requirement?
Aimee Rockhill
49:20
This was great! A big thanks to both of you. Can we share this with students that may be interested but were unable to attend?
Iona Hennessy
49:29
So if we aren't sure if a course counts we can submit the syllabus with our applications?
Brianna Winkel
49:36
As a current graduate student (MS) should we send our current transcripts to show proof for the reduced rate? Also, how would you like that listed under the education section on the application?
Rachel Zarndt
49:39
does anyone here know of online classes available is summer or fall that count toward the certification? I need wildlife management and policy specifically, but zoology would help too
Jessica Lang
49:43
I am also wondering if courses where you can obtain CEU credits could be supplemented for a university course (10 CEU vs 3 academic credits)
Dr. Karmen Hollis-Etter
49:54
Ionia - yes
Karli Eckel
49:56
Is application status communicated through email, or (I may be mistaken) I think I heard by U.S. post mail?
Kevin Shelton
50:04
How does the Board evaluate non-traditional educational and professional experience that doesn't fit the strict criteria?
Tarryn Hanson
50:16
Can an application be summitted before our graduation?
Megan Howard
50:26
Rachel, Bemidji State University has a couple summer online courses that would fulfill the policy/administration/law requirement!
Genevieve Rozhon
50:36
Since it seems that many people who are out of school would have difficulty meeting the plant tax requirement, how do people meet this requirement? is there a particular online course through a college that most people go for? Looking for recommendations.
Dr. Karmen Hollis-Etter
50:36
Karli - submit by email but receive certificate by mail. Jamila can provide more information
Lauren Pharr
50:42
What if we pay and submit our application, but some application materials may be missing or you need additional information...will you let us know?
Dr. Karmen Hollis-Etter
51:04
lauren - yes they will communicate with you all the time and help you as much as possible
Mackenzie Su
51:06
would a forest ecology course count towards botany? or only ecology?
Kristina Burnette
51:14
Do master naturalist courses provided by the state count?
Lindsey Hesch
51:14
Can experience be used for policy, law, and admin? or thesis research?
Karli Eckel
51:21
Thank you, I apologize - I meant the application status (approved, denied, pending)
Natalie Burgos
51:22
What about environmental economics courses focused on the economics of environmental practices (or lack there of)
William Dowie
51:22
can MOOC platforms like Coursera and EdX count - especially if you pay for the certificate and are graded?
Karen Stackpole
51:25
would plant ID classes obtained from native plant society count towards plant tax requirement. Or wetland delineation training
Dr. Karmen Hollis-Etter
51:59
We have a forest veg ID and forest ecology course as options for our students to take under AWB option in botany requriements
Lauren Toivonen
51:59
Would classes taken through NCTC (National Conservation Training Center) count for education credits?
Dustin Howland
52:21
would teaching zoology in grad school count as a zoology
James McRacken
52:56
Second the NCTC question above.
Matthew Harris
52:59
Would courses taught potentially contribute to a course requirement substitute?
Karen Beatty
53:03
NCTC courses sometimes offer actual university credits for the class, but you typically need to ask for that option before the course ends.
Tom Plank
53:12
If I understood Jamila correctly, If you are already employee in the 486 series you would already be accepted for the AWB. Is there a separate application for folks in that category
Erika Schwoyer
53:35
Could unpaid Environmental Education internships count in substitution for communication credits?
Charles Cini
54:07
would that include animal physiology?
Lisa Dowling
54:07
I think my question got buried. If I am currently a AWB, are there additional education coursework requirements to advance to CWB or is it professional continuing education units?
Everett Hanna, CWB
54:34
Just experience I believe, Lisa.
Lauren Pharr
54:43
For the Wildlife biology category, can I count a marine biology and oceanography course if we focused on marine species and their environment along with policy for aspects of the ocean, beaches, etc.
Jasemine Brown
54:43
Can research assistant field work through university credit count towards the wildlife biology section?
Ally Marshall
54:55
Would a Mammalian Physiology course count for the Mammalogy category?
James McRacken
54:55
If you do use NCTC Shepherd U. credits will we need a transcript
Kathleen Williams
54:58
Does a crew lead position count as professional experience?
Brianna Winkel
55:02
I think mine got buried as well…… As a current graduate student (MS) should we send our current transcripts to show proof for the reduced price rate? Also, how would you like that listed under the education section on the application?
Al Arsenault
55:05
Correct Lisa - 60 months professional level experience to get CWB
Cheyenne Ginther
55:16
Does TWS have suggestions for institutions/online resources for those to make up the course credits for those that have since graduated and are currently employed?
Iona Hennessy
55:44
Should labs be entered as a separate course or combines with the lecture
Nokota Harpster
55:51
I have a question regarding the field course the TWS offers and how we can use the credits from that course toward our TWS certified wildlife biologist certification. Like what categories can we use those credits for?
Dr. Karmen Hollis-Etter
56:07
lisa - there is an application for your case: AWB to CWB and it is based on professional experience
Rachel Zarndt
56:13
a huge help during the pandemic would be if TWS could create a list of all known online courses that qualify for the fall
Karen Stackpole
56:20
Is there a certain GPA needed for a course to count?
Lauren Pharr
56:25
For the Wildlife biology category, can I count a marine biology and oceanography course if we focused on marine species and their environment along with policy for aspects of the ocean, beaches, etc.
Kristina Burnette
56:33
Do master naturalist courses count that are provided by the state?
Stacey Dolan
56:35
if you have 2 thesis-based masters degrees, can you count both towards the communications req?
Kelly Mildebrandt
56:51
I think my question has been buried too. Can classes taken for a Red Card Fire Certification be counted toward AWB/CWB Certification?
Shanon Pruden
56:52
Are there any degree programs out there that you endorse - for someone just starting school.
Lisa Elliott
56:55
Can a zoology course taken s/N work?
Aimee Rockhill
56:59
Thanks, Steve
Dr. Karmen Hollis-Etter
57:10
Wildlife management sections emphazies principles and practices of wildlife managment

My question keeps getting buried so sorry. For the Wildlife biology category, can I count a marine biology and oceanography course if we focused on marine species and their environment along with policy for aspects of the ocean, beaches, etc.

I obtained my CWB cert in 1998 (and have remained a member of TWS ever since), so I'm still a CWB correct?
Brianna Saylor

Could Writing Intensive course credits be split to provide some additional credits toward the communications requirements?
Jessica Lang
58:14
I understand that a course cannot be counted twice (but can be split), however would a MSc Thesis be an exception? I.e. Count as communications 3 credits, as well as 3 credits for botany (if it has a heavy emphasis on plant taxonomy)? Also, can CEUs be used to replace Academic credits (10 CEU = 3 academic credits)
Everett Hanna, CWB

If you renewed every 5 years, David Y.
Rachel Zarndt

could a BA Neuroscience that included working with captive wild animals count as a wildlife degree?
Tom Prestby
58:54
Can a Master's thesis be counted toward 3 credits of communications AND one year of professional experience, or only one or the other?
Stacey Vigil

Does professional experience in vector-borne, wildlife disease surveillance (i.e. primarily working with arthropod vectors in the field and in the lab, as well as analyzing data and writing reports for state/federal agencies) count as professional wildlife biologist experience?
Kim Fettke
59:03
Could you answer this earlier question please? "I am also wondering if courses where you can obtain CEU credits could be supplemented for a university course (10 CEU vs 3 academic credits)"

01:00:19
state agencies offer education and training courses within their respective agencies, do these count as professional experience, the 80 CEU or the 150 CEUs requirements?
Kim Fettke
01:00:53
If you audited a course would it still count to meeting the education requirements?
Aubrey Greene
01:01:03
If your application is denied, do you have to pay the full application fee to reapply?
Karli Eckel
01:01:33
Re-stating someone elses question: Can research assistant field work through university credit count towards the wildlife biology section?
Brianna Winkel
01:01:42
Sorry again…. I think mine got buried… As a current graduate student (MS) should we send our current transcripts to show proof for the reduced rate? Also, how would you like that listed under the education section on the application?
Dr. Karmen Hollis-Etter
01:01:44
Aubrey - fees are not reimbured for denied application
Jessica Schmerler
01:02:08
Prof exp Q: I work as a biologist for my states wildlife agency. I work with developers and help them make construction decisions based on avoiding and minimizing impacts to endangered species. I will obviously be more specific on my app, but would this type of experience count?
Lauren Pharr
01:02:22
Is ornithology, mammology, herpatology ALL required in that category?
Dr. Karmen Hollis-Etter
01:02:31
Jessica - yes this is applicable experience for SOME credit
Scott Dismuke
01:03:21
Why would TWS not move towards a SAF approach towards professional certification? As in certification of a college program?
Emily Thoroski

Courtney King
01:03:45
Will the requirements ever change to better incorporate changes in courses that are increasingly valued (i.e. climate change, fire ecology, GIS)?
Al Arsenault
01:03:46
