Where is "the chat?" I think I'm looking at the zoom chat when the main one is elsewhere?
Elena Giralt
48:28
The "chat" that I am referring to is the zoom chat
Bradley Miller
49:02
The zoom chat is split between everyone or just panelists. I’d imagine most of it is going to the panelists only.
Elena Giralt
49:28
ahh good point Brad - that's exactly what's happening
Linda Liu
49:32
Ah, Brad, good catch. I was speaking to panelists.
Eric V
50:52
who is included in panelists only?
Elena Giralt
51:18
Sonya, Linda, Lawrence and Nate Strong

I'll chime in here with some open-ended discussion questions.1) How does the US legal history of privacy differ from other countries?2) How does right to privacy differ from right to private property?
Elena Giralt

Big boy ROY! standing up against surveillance.
Chile Bob

Chile has a *long* way to go - not much privacy here, limited right to assembly, lots of restrictions on who has the right to speak up or protest.

That's Brandeis "Right to Privacy" essay, 1890
Barbra Streisand
01:04:15
Is there any satisfying positive definition of privacy that is strong enough that it captures all these cases as well as contemporary use cases (i.e digital communication, finance, etc.)?
Barbra Streisand
01:05:31
I think zooko is somewhat close with his emphasis on consent but that's still a bit far away from a full fledged definition. Not an easy question but maybe Lawrence has input. And maybe it actually makes more sense to have the substance of what privacy means covered in different amendments like the US Constitution (freedom of speech, freedom from unwarranted searches, etc.) I don't know! :)
Eric V
01:05:53
regarding the the 4th amendment, have there been any recent challenges to the”third party doctrine”? i.e. privacy not expected when you “give” data to a third party like Facebook or Google?
Elena Giralt
01:06:01
Good question! I'll bring it up in the QA
Sonya Mann
01:09:45
hell yeah unenumerated rights
Elena Giralt
01:10:03
right! This lecture is awesome.
Sonya Mann
01:10:14
we should compare-contrast the cypherpunk conception of privacy

which is all about not broadcasting, or obfuscating, data

Agreed! That was excellent. It makes me so much more curious about the topic of privacy!
Sonya Mann

I wanna read his book!!!
Sonya Mann
01:14:52
Habeas Data is another book about these topics, by Ars Technica reporter Cyrus Farivar
Bradley Miller

Unfortunately, I'm joining late because Zoom hides the option to use just your browser, really trying to force you to download their software, which I'm not comfortable with. Only now discovered the browser-only option. :(
Sonya Mann
01:15:58
yeah while we’re here: Zoom sucks
Sonya Mann
01:16:03
but so does every other solution for this
Sonya Mann
01:16:16
Hangouts is my preference but they all have downsides

y’all what are your questions for Lawrence???

there’s a legibility versus metis (https://samzdat.com/2017/05/22/man-as-a-rationalist-animal/) angle to privacy
