I'd like know what to do when there is no participation from the students or families at home and it's not due to lack of resources etc. The adult simply says the kids doing want to do the work. They are not even logging in to take attendance and we are reaching out daily

47:56
I agree with Lori - having the same issue

48:08
How frustrating @ Lori Ramos-Johnson

48:13
Cheryl, what is your issue?

48:21
I'm not a teacher i'm the PC and i'm on the attendance team

48:37
How do we balance family stressors with our need to connect with students?

48:49
Hi Sadiq!

49:00
no IT issues, children are just refusing to work, parents are not supportive & allow children to refuse to work'

49:32
The parent has told me several times... "they don't want to do the work"

49:39
We worked very hard on our building level attendance intervention prior to Covid. How do we re-engage with chronically absent students and families when some are still disengaged e-learning?

49:44
We are also seeing a lot of the older children taking care of siblings, so don't have the time to do the work

49:46
Sounds like some similar issues when school is in session at the school site @ Cheryl Perkins

49:49
I really think we have to have a lot of empathy for parents - if they are checked out right now, I would check in to provide a wellness check at least once a week, and move at the parents pace

49:51
I agree Cheryl, parents are challenged with educating their children at home

49:58
Good Q Deb Schwartz. Tx!

50:03
For those parents who are allowing their kids to not do work - are there other stressors in the students or families' lives that keep them from being able to do work: bereavement, mental health issues, loss of work, etc

50:43
Cheryl Most schools need to employ WIIFM What's In It For Me as it relates to parents.

50:48
We have to make it easy for parents, knowing how much stress we are all under these days.

50:50
Can we save the chat?

51:07
In Virginia, once the DoE said the work wouldn't count toward students' grades, some parents decided it wasn't worth the battle to get their kids to participate in distance learning.

51:09
The chat will be emailed to us afterwards, I believe

51:10
I know ppws are not in every jurisdiction- but it would be nice to see us listed as a tired 3 intervention. Pupil Personnel Workers! it is PPW week in Maryland!

51:23
Tiffany - The chat will be included with the recording link.

51:45
Lori that is why we are all in this webinar haha

51:52
I hope it will be emailed to us because there’s good stuff here but with my ADHD I can’t focus on both the presentation and the chat so TTYL!

51:54
Distance learning is likely to continue into the next school year so maybe we need more training for parents and more accountability as well?

52:01
MS Dept of Education

52:20
"they don't want to do the work" to me sounds like kids are having some behavioral issues that parents don't have the skills to handle. a lot of kids are stressed by the pandemic and having their whole world change. and when families do not have the skills to help them navigate those emotions, a lot of times we see defiance. pair that up with parents who are too stressed to spend the time navigating remote learning, and then you get "my kids doesn't want to"

52:43
Seek first to understand, then to be understood. Folks want to make others "accountable" yet they don't always understand the concerns the parents have.

53:00
HS student prevously struggling academically , refuses to accept check in phone calls from school staff , so I’ve continued to call the parent weekly for parental support to help engage her child.

53:08
Children of all ages are worried about their parents who aren't working, keeping their apartments, getting food. High schools are working since their parents lost their jobs. 30% of our students are showing up and doing the work. Less than 10% are not. The rest are struggling. There is a also an unexpected % who are blossoming with online learning.

53:33
Yes, Chelanna and Linda. Thank you. It is easy to always blame the parents, but there are a lot of layers to what is going on right now. And to every day life for many, even outside of this pandemic!

53:43
will all powerpoints be sent out to participants?

53:47
Not to be rude, but it's hard to see the slides when there are frequent pop ups of the chat.

54:07
Parent Relationship and determining WIIFM for parents should be first priority. We provide career based parent involvement workshops. www.autoworkz.org/insights

54:09
thank you Zola

54:11
Personally, when my children were in school, I couldn’t help them with their homework because, although I am a great tutor for OTHER people’s kids, I have no patience with my own. If I were suddenly expected to guide their education, I couldn’t do it.

54:20
Trey, yes the prevention slides and link to webinar recording will be sent to everyone who registered

54:25
To remove the chat box: toggle your mouse towards the bottom of the screen and select the chat icon.

58:50
@Linda It's not that I don't understand, I'm looking for additional ways to help the kids. WE are offering all types of solutions, resources, individual tutoring, different timing including after hours, and other means of support but the parents are not receptive. The father says they have all they need and that they will log on but again they don't even log on so that we CAN help them. Our attendance is pretty good otherwise but with out judgement my concern at the end of the day are the children.

58:54
if you click the chat icon to bring up the chat box > make it small> the move it to the bottom right of your screen so that only a little bit of the top shows...then you don't see the popups anymore

01:00:21
@ Lori: I get it, it's hard. I have found that going deeper reveals the obstacles. That's all

Zola, you can also try to move the chat box to the far right or far left of your screen. This works well if you also don’t use your full screen view for the webinar.

01:03:53
It does NOT turn off. Now I am wasting time saying this

01:03:53
Like the pizza party idea. We have a lot of restaurants doing pizza kits in our areas. We normally do pizza pages to encourage reading. That might be good.

01:04:26
Are the pizza parties used as a reward for good attendance?

01:04:30
what is a mesh network?

01:04:44
how can we learn more about MESH Networking

01:04:56
I am simply amazed at what everyone in school districts are doing for their students and families. Such as here in Ohio I seen a school district used their buses to write out 2020 in honor of the seniors.

01:05:02
We are a K-8 district and our team received enough donations to "adopt" all foster and homeless students promoting from kinder, 5th and 8th grade students with giant gift baskets. They do no contact delivery and then call the family to have the student come out and have a small group cheer for the student and photo ops

01:05:20
I gave weekly or monthly awards for good attendance, which can easily be sent virtually. Students love certificates they can be proud of.

01:05:32
Gerilyn, that's a great idea!

01:05:58
Can we share these networks

01:06:19

01:07:22
Can you remind the attendees how we all can adopt a trauma-informed approach to schooling right now with a few examples? Thank you.

01:07:32
Once you have the data of which families are struggling to get their students to complete remote learning. When it is not a barrier of internet access or chromebook access how do you encourage participation and completion of classwork. I like Molly's cerificate strategy. Any others?

01:07:37
What are your suggestions for reaching scholars and families that spread across a city. In New Haven, there are not many community schools. It may be difficult to reach all homes in any one given school.

01:07:51
we created positive signature hole punches that the kids could save up like money and then purchase homework passes, oops coupons ( so they could turn work in late but still get credit), student lounge passes etc. they get positive hole punches from behavior as well as attendance. they LOVE it!

01:15:46
@Patricia the California Department of Education has started a distance learning webinar series:https://www.cde.ca.gov/ls/he/hn/covid19webinars.asp

01:15:48
Suggestions on what to do when there is absolutely no contact with students and families? Teachers, counselor, and social worker have reached out by phone, email, and other communication platforms (Remind, Dojo, etc). Home visits are discouraged by our district.

We agree Jamie! We’ve collected more ideas for how to connect with students and families who are not in touch: Strategies for Connecting with Students and Familieshttps://www.attendanceworks.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/Attendance-Works-Finding-Unreachable-Students-Generic-051120.pdf

01:17:30
We doing great. Just waiting what to do with students. Back school all one time, or slowly, in classroom, or out of classroom. some students may not come back because parents “homeschooling” them. So many questions

01:18:02
Please know that the Outreach Center for Deafness and Blindness at OCALI is here to support learners who are deaf/hard of hearing, or blind/visually impaired. This does include supporting families and kids with virtual accessibility needs. We are happy to help! Check out some of our resources, in particular our free Promoting Access video module, which you can receive professional credit from.www.promotingaccess.orgI have to go—but I am looking forward to revisiting this great presentation through the recording!

01:18:09
Great point Sadiq.

01:18:35
Does anyone have a model of an MTSS for attendance? We have developed one in Centennial School District, Portland, Oregon, with agreed-upon supports/interventions at the three tiers. However, we would love to see some other models, exemplars, to continue our development.

01:18:55
OMGOSH thank @mich… I work with deaf and hard of hearing students and need to know what is procedure for them

01:19:04
I tried look NAD.org but nothing yet

01:19:11
Yes, Chanel. I think the virus will have to be watched this summer before we bring students back to school sites safely.

01:19:17
@Chuck - there is a great MTSS for attendance on attendance works website

01:19:35
Where is the survey on the PIQE website?

01:19:40
Hi Chuck!, my kids are in Centennial schools!! Thank you!!

01:19:45
Great ideas Sharon.

01:20:16
Yes. I've looked and can't find the Survey and results from PIQE

01:20:29
I agree their health and safety is the most important right now. How much can we learn when stressed, anxious, and afraid? The brain shuts down.

01:20:30
@Chuck, check out the Attendance Works 3 tiers of intervention: https://www.attendanceworks.org/chronic-absence/addressing-chronic-absence/3-tiers-of-intervention/

01:20:33
@Molly… Correct and mostly school finished May 28. We left don’t know what will happen to students during summer. not everyone sign up for summer enrichment.

01:20:37
where on the piqe.org site is the parent survey? I cant find it

01:20:45
Please provide link to survey on Pique website.

01:20:54
Yes please- where on pique.org is survey?

01:21:02
@Chanel they may just need a break and a real summer after all this stress.

01:21:08
I think this may be the survey info? https://www.piqe.org/media/

01:21:33
Yes. Families are done!! Kids are also done! We need new creative ides to engage them

01:21:33
Families are giving up because lessons are given to studnets that they cannot complete or understand for few reasons:

01:21:40
What are strategies for working with newcomer families from outside the US and have no English Languages skills or understanding of the education system, much less technology

01:21:47
@molly CORRECT! i am a mother with two youngest. you totally right. We need to BREATH again before August

01:21:59
Hi, Rose Solowski. Do you have another role in CSD in addition to parent?

01:22:10
I can’t imagine how scared the kids must be. They have a lot of anxiety without Covid-19 and think about how scared we are..students must feel it even more.

01:22:29
I have not heard who is serving parents who may have struggled with their own education and now they must teach their children.

01:22:30
Yes Parents calling telling us they NOT the teachers. and work been given is repeating work. We can’t gives new work because its not graded. We just give enrichment kind of work.

01:22:39
Online connection tends to have issies, teachers cannot be heard and they do not get enough samples on how to do the work. Kids are frustrated.

01:22:41
@ Chuck I work for Friends of the Children as the Family Engagement Program Manager

01:22:45
@Ida - exactly!

01:22:48
I am sending summer resources for kids: indoor scavenger hunts, STEM activities, brain breaks, enrichment websites, etc. for down time, as they kids and families are SO overwhelmed by all of the academic demands.

01:23:01
When I do connect with families, I try to reinforce that I am not the "accountability police" I am here to stay connected to the family.

01:23:13
As a Community School Coordinator, who is also a mother of 3 kids...I'm TIRED! I can only imagine how stressed parents who have the financial strain added as well

01:23:25
Parents are not the teachers, even with distance learning. Most teachers are providing so much. Parents just need to support and encourage and provide structure and positive reinforcement.

01:23:31
Yes this exactly I saying… HIGH socially emotionally Learning will be needs first before School.

01:23:35
when they comes back

01:24:02
I agree Molly

As a Parent Leader with a full time job from home the partnership between me, my son and his special education team from CES, Thurgood Marshall Middle School in CT has been essential to his continued learning.

01:26:45
@Chanel, teaching is still a thankless job often, online or in person. Bless you all!

01:26:53
@molly my child tells me same thing. Mommy lets go outside breathes. You working too hard. Sadly she correct. Doing her distance learning and my own working from home. Yet balancing well..

01:27:16
Yes! Being a parent and a head start teacher is not easy. Parents are exhausted! I know I am

01:27:17
I think most of our parents are doing the best they can. They are operating under tremendous stress. I also think there are huge differences across the country (and even within the same schools) with what teachers are providing to students. A lot of parents are being asked to be the primary teachers with very limited interactions with teachers. Just as teachers had to adapt quickly to distance learning, so did parents with even less resources and more on their plates as well.

Just do your best @ Chanel. Do not expect to mirror what you can do with kids 6 hours a day in a classroom.

01:27:31
being a parent during this sucks. my kid's temperament is suffering and I am at a loss on how to help because I am exhausted more now then ever.

01:27:54
I find it hard to do activities with our infants also a lot of families don’t have resources to access zoom

01:28:19
We must remember that we know the work that we are sending the students - on the other hand the students and families do not until learned so we must be mindful and keep up your great effort

01:28:25
no summer school for us, my kid needs a break and so do I from all of this! 23 teaching days left!

01:28:35
I know Stacie. Hang in there. This sucks for everyone. School work can provide some structure the kids we need. I know I felt better after I set up my home office and gave more structure to my workday.

01:28:37
Melanie - we're having summer school for ELLs (1st/2nd year), and for 30% of middle schoolers, and credit recovery in HS. We're going to provide ideas for parents this summer, and check in with community partners about what's going to be offered.

01:28:42
for our older kids we do send activity packets to help them

01:28:45
@stacie… I am counting too

01:28:47
and their parents

01:29:00
For families and students that have been contacted over and over, trained, given resources, home visits, and so much support…but the student still is not engaging on any level, what can we do? We have so many in this situation. We have done SO much out reach…the list is so long. This is a South LA neighborhood that has a lot of generational trauma, poverty, and violence. We have a deeply committed admin and teacher community that is really exhausting all resources, yet we still have so many students that can’t engage because of the heaviness of all their circumstances. Any suggestions on how to engage after everything mentioned here in this training has been implemented? We’re looking for anything that’s super new or out of the box

01:29:00
we giving out free package to families, free books, supplies

01:29:20
I understand and have experienced the same Stacie. Strive to be kind to yourself and your children. Give yourself permission to take a break for an hour or a day for self and family care.

01:29:22
@stacie we are very sorry to hear this.

01:29:35
it’s hard to keep contact with some families

01:29:40
@Beth… THOSE too… counseling and social worker now stepping in helping out…

01:29:51
a very few accept some resources

01:29:52
As a School Attendance Officer for MDE, I realize while counseling with truant kids, active listening is critical while addressing the issue and resolving the problem.

01:29:53
Enjoy your time together this summer, Stacie. We all deserve a break from this non-stop stress!

01:30:01
@Beth im sort of in the same boat!

01:31:00
my daughter was excited to have activity packets sent home and she’s only two lol

01:31:06
What about families that block our numbers so that we can't contact them? Any ideas on how to get the students engaged when the entire family doesn't want to participate?

01:31:08
I loved her excitement

01:31:18
Thank you Charlene Russell-Tucker for representing our state.

01:31:19
@susana….aw so cute!

01:31:52
@Susana SAME! I have a 5 year old lol

01:31:52
@Taryn exactly!!! ignoring text message after reply to some.

01:31:54
yes and as a teacher I feel for the children because a lot of them are used to learning through their outside play

01:32:03
google voice to connect to parents who don't answer phone

01:32:14
I hate I have to jump off... Very informative and needed! Thank you for your work and leadership. Looking forward to the presentation and next steps

01:32:31
I have to leave to attend an IEP meeting. Thank you everyone!

01:32:35
Try Whats app..it is free and many families have it

01:32:37
Yes I have Google Voice but they block the numbers.... or if they answer they just hang up.

01:32:44
@Taryn, you might consider offering them information on how to access local resources, such as food or health services. We’ve collected a lot of ideas that we recently shared with schools in Detroit. Find them here: https://www.attendanceworks.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/Attendance-Works-Finding-Unreachable-Students-Generic-051120.pdf

01:32:44
aww is you 5yr old bored of being indoor? @ Monique

01:32:46
Send cards and just let them know you are thinking about them. Sometimes we can only do what we can do.

01:33:13
MENTOR Family!!!

01:33:20
I've actually called using my home phone and only have 3 of 500 kids not contacted in one form or another.

01:33:27
@Jarvis, Neena, thanks for joining us!

01:33:33
there is texting on google voice as well which i am finding works well.

01:33:38
yes @rebecca all we can do is try and hope the parents appreciate and value the information we provide for them

01:34:01
okay it’s time for me to hope off :/

01:34:07
Yes, @Rebecca. Teachers are naturally perfectionists but we really need to let that go during Covid-19. The Spanish Flu in 1918 had no technology. We can just do our best and understand this is just not a normal time in life on the planet.

01:34:19
we are sending out people to do wellness checks on those that have no contact so far

01:34:21
@monique, it’s so heartbreaking. We are doing so much and have implemented so much that has been mentioned here. But, we are looking at 90% of our juniors failing one class and 75% failing 4 or more. I’m a former 15 year teacher, and finishing up my MSW and I’m the SOWK intern. We are having daily meetings and have tried so many interventions. But, we’ve hit a wall

01:34:22
thank you for the valuable information through this webinar and all the chat info as well

01:34:49
Great information! Must go to the next Friday meeting, looking forward to answers on q&a!!

01:35:18
Bye Sandra!

01:35:25
@susana This is exactly I am learning to feel right now. and before days we couldn’t contact no one as my grandpa said. He said all these junks as he called it cause old fashion is amazing. I get to talk to my families. That is true because I get to Zoom with my friends just for release of medicine of laugh

01:36:25
Is there any voices from students and parents that I can read or hear about during this time?

01:36:35
Its nice to hear from them instead educators you know

01:36:37
@beth the most important thing is those students live through this pandemic. Keep that in mind. Learning is lifelong, they can catch up.

01:37:24
Bye Alison from across the pond.:)

01:37:25
.

01:37:39
Thankyou so much! I enjoyed this webinar, and I will definitely join in for future ones...have a great afternoon and be safe! Would you please send contact info again? Thanks from Shawn Freeman

01:38:18
@Molly, yes. We are trying to help staff shift their thinking away from the achievement and to support SEL, but it’s a hard battle. But, we have so many kids struggling don’t have the support in place for credit recovery, so we are trying to propose a shift in thinking about grading, etc. But it’s been tricky

01:38:35
Where on the PIQE websites do the surveys reside?

01:38:37
We are not giving Ds and Fs. The few who have not participated at all or not done any of the work may receive no credit and we have credit recovery programs. But we're not going to fail students because of covid-19

01:38:53
students are incredibly resilient. I have found many are doing very well since "virtual" is their language

01:39:02
It is hard to learn with so much anxiety on the brain. Glad you are modeling SEL practices!

01:39:07
@beth, those numbers are staggering and tragic. I can imagine your frustration. I agree that they can be caught up, and hopefully schools will come up with some creative credit recovery programs in the coming months. I'm also finishing up my MSW (finally)...good luck!

01:39:12
@debbie i can’t open it

01:39:13
@Molly, agree!!!

01:39:39
@Valerie: fin the PIQE survey: https://www.piqe.org/media/

01:39:46
@ Chanel In Oregon we recently held a statewide Zoom with student in middle and high school. The students were in moderated session rooms, while the educators were listeners. There were prompts about distance learning that the students responded to. It was a great way to hear student voice on what was working for them and what was not.

01:39:54
Type your questions into this chat box, and we will pass them to our speakers

01:40:09
Try contacting families outside of school time. I have had more success at 8:00 am and 8:00 pm!

01:40:28
agree

01:40:31
@Yea, we are proposing massive changes in the grading policies, that will be more supportive for the students and their MH needs, but it’s been a very challenging process

01:47:02
This has been great everyone! Thank you so much!

01:47:22
thank you @catherine… will we be getting emails?

01:47:27
I am with Helping Families Initiative in Alabama. One of our school districts put wifi in the school buses since they are not being used and placed them in rural and low income areas. This has helped bridge technology and communication gaps.

01:47:34
AWESOMES!!!!

01:47:38
Include Community Based partners in planning and in the solutions for recovery. For example if there is an alternate day schedule or half day model - Community Based Partners can help serve students when they are not in school. But it will take support and coordination and inclusion of those partners.

01:47:39
Thank you!!

01:47:48
Anyone who want to continue the conversation feel free to contact me at mstitt@cde.ca.gov

01:48:01
Question for educators, how do you think schools that reopen will incorporate outside professionals into the classroom? (behavior specialists, therapeutic staff support)

01:48:02
In our district, the community and parent liaisons are in charge of the connectivity and relationship. We are the ones who call and connect with families who are not showing engagement online.

01:48:03
PLEASE if any admins here, PLEASE include your school nurses in the planning of returning to schools! they are an integral part of the public health and school systems. NASN has some great resources for this!
