Hello! Adriana from CAE
Hi to all attendees, from Seneca College WIL dept.
Hello from Sashya D'Souza at Toronto Finance International
Hello from Rotman Commerce
Thanks for providing this community Graham, and others like CEWIL
Hello from University of Alberta, MBA Program
Hello! Nicole from MNP in Calgary
if you are an accounting employer, do you plan on proceeding with spring recruitment, or delaying until fall?
How can we help your business during this downturn?
Does your company have infrastructure to allow student hires to WFH
How can we onboard students and provide meaningful work remotely? How can we support supervisors who are transitioning into remote work themselves?
I'm wondering which areas/depts are being targeted first as far as cutting employment?
Are employers afraid that if they don't hire now or promote themselves, they will struggle to recruit when everything gets back to normal
AS an employer do you have a preference for post-grad student hiring or are you looking for more junior entry-level employees?
Which areas are of still high demand/sure of need?
How can small businesses compete for talent during a downturn
CEWIL is covering 120+ institutions...best not to duplicate PSI surveying
Creative ways to help ensure students feel connected, even if we end up working from home for the entire summer work term
As an employer, what are the key skills you seek from student/new grads?
Not a question for the survey itself, and I just wanted to know if you're open to us (educational institutions) helping push the poll to help increase the numbers?
Will employers offer remote work placements and internships for graduate students?
To fellow educators: I'm curious what are the most common questions you get from students.
Will the government be launching specific employment or training programs that we can direct students to?
Does you organization rely on a gov't subsidy exclusively to fund student positions (i.e. SWPP nationally or tax credit in Ontario), or can they be sustained through your normal finances and budget?
Email, as requested
Group email updates and individual responses when needed
Western has sent out emails to employers
Not ready to make annoucements
Once we have more info I will send an email to universities we have students joining us from
Various business units making different decisions on students
We've reached out to the students we had been in contact with directly
Website, email, social media, direct contacts
Emailed all employers to offer support and ask for updates
Email with specific information to specific employers based on if they have a co-op student now or if they are recruiting for summer
Have not done this yet, but now that we are active online and the dust is settling, we will do this within the next 5 days
Various modes: 1 on 1 meetings through site visits, email by employer segment, website updates, social media, video conferencing
For major decisions a broadcast email, otherwise case by case either we're outreaching outor responding to their enquiries.
Nothing formal yet - some social media platforms. Plan to do something more formal within the next week or two. Want to reach out directly at some point.
Emails, newsletters, social media
Keeping in close touch with employers who have hired Co-ops
FAQ for employers
decision has not been made yet
Currently we are not rescinding any offers
thanks Blake for note making cancellations yet!
Employers are sometimes asking co-op department to communicate on their behalf
for NOT making...
No decision has been made
it will be a case by case approach depending on the hiring manager
While working for a global bank in 2008, we provided interns with 2 month severance when we rescinded their internship offers.
four month internship
we knew it was very generous but assumed they may not have been able to find similar employment in the capital markets that summer
Updates, plans to continue with hiring or not
Recruiting plan for Summer
Start Dates, working remotely options - lots of suggestions to change nature of job duties to enable wfh
sharing student communications so we can support them as best as possible
Plans for Fall OCR once known
If shrinkage is occurring, are there other areas where students could do their co-ops? REgular updates so we can manage expectations
Our challenge is to keep students motivated and not defeated during this time. How they would like us to message opportunities for students
Graham, encourage responses to "all panelists and attendees" or else we can't see them.
For employers postponing start dates, are you paying effective on the initial start date?
Those with CEWIL accreditation - COVID19 will not affect accreditation during this period. We are encouraging flexibility and innovation during this time, not affecting anyone's accreditation if hours are changing. (answering previous questions).
my bad. what virtual platforms will you use to engage students ?
Are there any opening opportunities available for the students
Robert Ste Croix
For offers rescinded/postponed - communicate to Career Services in order to provide support to students.
I'm curious which jobs are actually being created/where there is a need due to everything going online? Both for students w/ CS/ tech background or not? For instance there are companies that are in high need of employees and hiring right now -- eg online food delivery etc.
support with promoting any of our virtual recruitment initiatives to students
We want to know what are options are for 8 month students if we need to look at all options
What their recommendations are, how we can support students at this time
Any insights you hear about funding support via government that can help us continue to keep hires starting
Another question for employers: as networking tends to be important in a job search, how would they like students to reach out to employees? Is it still ok?
Thank you for the advice Cara!
there are a lot of internal decisions still being made and the situation changes hourly. students are reaching out and unfortunately we still don't have a lot of answers. Support with the ambiguity is appreciated.
Are schools going to help students potentially work a co-op term during an "off" term?
students should keep networking for sure. Great way to build their network and stay top of mind
For employers, any cool remote onboarding tools?
That is not always possible for cohort-based programs
Robyn, absolutely! They should be encouraged to reach out to our current consultants
As much as possible we will help with resequencing or other ways to get hours (Brock specific answer)
Are any employers who only offers a summer internship potentially considering fall internships?

Should I take summer courses and do a fall internship instead?
Virtual scavenger hunts
@virtual scavenger hunt - YES! great idea. Can we have some more of those offered to employers
our team works remotely and discord has been really helpful
Some employers still require in-person interviews. To what extent do you encourage employers to reconsider and offer virtual/phone interview?Do you still accept openings from employers insisting on in-person interviews? If so, do you request details about an established approach to reduce the risk/spread of COVID19?Any liability concern ie exposure/risk?
As people move to virtual networking conversations - we've put together some tips to help them have virtual coffee chats. I hear often how students are nervous to network. period.Six Tips for Virtual Coffee Chats: https://www.tenthousandcoffees.com/blog/six-tips-for-a-successful-virtual-coffee
Is there a tool for students to convene and be moderated by us in some way, to keep those classroom connections intact?
We have a "Zoom Room" where students can drop by our virtual office for an hour and informally hang out with us (they can also Internship or Career related questions). We do this 3x a week for 1 hour.So far, awesome feedback, and some of them called us their new "podcast" they enjoy listening too.
Thanks Lucas, we're still exploring all of the features of the tools we have like Zoom. Cheers!
Lucas Maliniak - Excellent idea. Some programs have used this to help our students cope and ensure mental wellness
Just want to note that I really appreciate this forum, and bringing us all together.
Amazing love the zoom room idea Lucas..how many members does this zoom room allow you to host?
Virtual group Career Conversations using Zoom to help students stay connected and active
Feel free to reach us at ECC@UCalgary.ca and we can chat about it in more detail! To quickly answer question(s):- from a wellness point of view it was great for our own team wellness and student wellness = Win/Win!- We had 5-ish members of our team in there, and we use the break-out rooms feature to do 1-on-1 or small group discussions!
How do we stay updated with your contents?
Have you heard anything from folks on 10,000 coffees..are they still open to chat with students and conduct virtual networking?
Erynn Are there any phone scripts appropriate to the COVID craziness which students can use especially the ones who are nervous, timid, ESL, etc?
