Fiona Nichols
01:10:17
A huge challenge here with "pumping
Fiona Nichols
01:11:15
A huge challenge in "pumping" is how guidance schedules students. Perhaps VCMS could develop a document to spell out the importance of four years of math for ll students
Fiona Nichols
01:11:50
Excuse the happy fingers typing LOL
David Van Vleet
01:14:38
YES!
Kristin Williams
01:14:57
Fiona, one of the recommendations from the catalyzing change work is that students take 4 years of math in high school.
Kathleen Morris
01:15:03
Cathy Seeley addressed that calculus issue briefly in her NCTM 100 talk last evening
Fiona Nichols
01:15:28
I know, it is great. I was on the committee
Terri Roettinger
01:16:25
Including parents in this conversation is critical. The way it has always been gets in the way of moving forward
Debbie Delozier
01:16:49
Absolutely Terri!
Kelly Kent-Johnson
01:16:51
So true, Terri
Shelly Pine
01:16:56
spot on Terri - we've absolutely discussed that on the communication committee of VMPI
Jared Brown
01:16:58
That race to calc also puts students in a situation where they either take the SAT after algebra 2 when they're freshmen or sophomores and not as mature OR they take the SAT/ACT their junior year after they've forgotten some of the simpler concepts learned in Algebra 2.
Fiona Nichols
01:17:12
I agree
Kristin Williams
01:17:45
Good point Jared
Alyson Eaglen
01:18:30
I apologize if this was already addressed... how can we access this powerpoint?
Shelly Pine
01:18:47
it will come in a follow up email from VCMS and VDOE
Debbie Delozier
01:18:50
The PPT and recording will be shared.
Alyson Eaglen
01:19:08
Thank you!
kristin Rojas
01:19:08
Thank you
Leslie Murphy Brown
01:21:08
I completely agree with Jared. I was one of those student back when I was in HS. I took an SAT prep class to refresh my memory on Geometry and Algebra 2 before taking the SAT because it has been 2 years since I had those courses before I took the test. I'm not sure if all HS offer an SAT prep course like I was able to take, but if not, then our students could actually be at a disadvantage.
Jared Brown
01:23:13
My school system doesn't currently offer a SAT prep class; so my students are at a HUGE disadvantage. I will push harder to implement that class at my school. (I am an AP/AD at Alleghany High School on the WV/VA border.
Johnetta Vaughan
01:23:40
What better time to do this now that we have so much COVID data and possibly no SOL assessments...
Kelly Kent-Johnson
01:23:59
Good point, Johnetta!
Debbie Delozier
01:23:59
Agreed!
DEBORAH BLISS
01:24:33
We, as a community of practitioners in Virginia, have had this conversation semi-continuously since 1987. I would offer now, as Betti Kreye and I offered in 1987+ that the key to catalyzing mathematics for students is catalyzing change in teachers K-12 and at the collegiate level. Integral to change for K-12 instruction lies in change in administrators as much as in teachers.
Leslie Murphy Brown
01:25:07
So, true, Deborah!
Debbie Delozier
01:25:34
Yes Deb! Definitely the focus of the VMPI.
Fiona Nichols
01:25:47
I agree Debbie. Great to hear from you!
DEBORAH BLISS

01:28:57
This is so exciting that we could actually move in this direction! Thank you!
kristin Rojas
01:29:14
Thank you so much!
Kristin Williams
01:29:52
This VMPI team is absolutely amazing!!!!
Jared Brown
01:32:15
I agree "playing the game of school" allows students to receive an "a" but not understand math to the depth it seems they do.
Tonya Fields-Hines
01:32:24
Access to quality resources and a community of support for teachers would help. This amazing shift in practices could happen. However teachers need continued intentional support going forward.
Debbie Delozier
01:32:58
So true! Definitely will be part of the plan.
Shamika Carey
01:33:19
I agree because 'fast thinkers' are normally not the 'deep thinkers'
Samara Booker
01:35:17
Agreed, Tonya Fields-Hines!
Sue Jenkins
01:36:33
Kristen can you send these links in an email later?
Leslie Murphy Brown
01:36:57
Agreed, Tonya! Unfortunately, some math teachers (regardless of grade level) struggle teaching math from a conceptual standpoint so students truly understand the procedural aspect. If the emphasis is going deeper and having a deeper understanding, that means (to me) that students have a higher level of conceptual understanding and teachers may need help in understanding that themselves.
Kris Gushue
01:36:59
I have waited for this for a long time!
Kristin Williams
01:37:06
Here is a google folder that has all the handouts: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1ny8V72cJtgrj4gogh7FMu8TAE6oA-REP?usp=sharing

01:38:07
This is quite exciting work!
Terri Roettinger
01:38:16
Wow - is this something that will be incorporated in the next standards revision process? Is there a timeline for getting this going? :-)
Tina Mazzacane - VDOE
01:38:35
We will be sharing the tentative timeline today as well.
Fallon Graham
01:38:51
This is fantastic. I can’t wait for the public introduction!
Debbie Delozier
01:39:10
Yes Terri - this will need to be part of the next standards revision.
Terri Roettinger
01:39:31
how we package this for parents and the greater community will be important. Shock and Awe will not be the way to get this off the ground :-)
Terri Roettinger
01:39:40
I love this!
Terri Roettinger
01:39:51
I want it to succeed
Tara McGrady
01:39:59
I can't wait to see this!
Leslie Murphy Brown
01:40:05
If students need to get 2 credits during 11th and 12th grade year and they choose to do the 1/2 credit courses, how would that work if schools are not on a semester/block schedule?
Debbie Delozier
01:40:11
Terri - so true. The communication team is working hard on what needs to be included--
Johnetta Vaughan
01:40:14
That takes a lot of creative scheduling and number of teachers available to teach several courses right?
Tina Mazzacane - VDOE
01:40:23
Agreed Terri -- we will need the help of our wonderful mathematics community of leaders
Kristin Williams
01:40:43
google folder with handouts: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1ny8V72cJtgrj4gogh7FMu8TAE6oA-REP?usp=sharing
Fiona Nichols
01:41:30
When I was in high school about 100 years ago, our English classes consisted of choices every 9 weeks. It was student choice based on interest.
Kristin Williams
01:42:38
this handout is also in the google folder I shared
Jared Brown
01:42:39
That would be convenient to tailor some of my math classes towards interests in my area and my vocational school. The good ol' boys and girls would love more hands on math and less theory.
Terri Roettinger
01:42:52
How will pilot school divisions be selected?
deanna moreau
01:44:08
This is amazing, beginning with the end in mind!!!! This is huge!!!
Tara McGrady
01:44:42
Will our teachers need special certifications to teach some of these courses. We are already facing challenges staffing our math classes.
Kristin Williams
01:44:46
Those details haven't been flushed out yet Terri
Terry Hartley
01:44:47
Are there plans to create PD and higher ed courses for teachers to be prepared to teach these essential concepts and advanced modules?
Tina Mazzacane - VDOE
01:45:10
Piloting of the "new" advanced mathematics concepts courses will be paired with professional learning for divisions - the capacity for professional learning will most likely drive the piloting options
Terri Roettinger
01:45:44
Terry - I agree. I wonder if the grant money could be used like it was used in the math specialist endorsement focus
Tina Mazzacane - VDOE
01:46:15
Certification and licensing are a consideration and are being discussed by the VMPI leadership and with VDOE leadership
David Van Vleet
01:46:17
Are there examples for students who are not interested in college?
Tina Mazzacane - VDOE
01:47:42
The sample pathways could include students entering vocations or the workplace based on the career being pursued
Kristen Weidle
01:48:01
I am verge excited about the possibilities moving forward! I believe this will benefit our students immensely.
Kristen Weidle
01:48:16
*very (sorry!)
Leslie Murphy Brown
01:48:17
I know the Rural Math Initiative was working on helping connect math to 2-year community college programs and certification programs for those student who did not wish to go on to a 4-year college and that information was very enlightening. I wonder if that information can be coupled with the current listing of career clusters here??
Deb Crawford
01:48:45
Great job sharing the vision, Brian!!!
David Van Vleet
01:48:53
Yes Leslie!
Carol Walsh
01:49:00
Thanks Brian!!
Kristin Williams
01:49:03
That's a great suggestion Leslie
Pam Walker
01:49:20
Thanks Very exciting!
Tina Mazzacane - VDOE
01:49:20
We have been talking with folks at the Rural Math Initiative and hope to connect with their work as we move forward
Rhonda White
01:49:23
I think this would increase equity, opportunity and relevance.
Tonya Fields-Hines
01:50:20
Awesome....
Jenny Gibson
01:50:48
I love the direction we’re headed! Thank you to all of you who are working on this initiative.
Jessica Clervoi
01:51:06
I’m excited to see this roll out because I fee it will take the focus away from the hierarchy placed with different maths and place it on a deeper understanding of math skills and concepts. No longer forcing teachers and students to rush through concepts for the sake of getting it done without the chance for a deeper understanding.
Kris Gushue
01:51:13
As a group, we need to create a roadmap for sharing this with out school divisions so we share a common message.
Lynn Meade
01:51:14
Excited about the changes coming!
Amy Hickey
01:51:36
This is amazing and thoughtful work! Love the direction we are going.
Debbie Delozier
01:53:58
Absolutely Kris Gushue -- we look forward to this group's feedback on all aspects. Tina will share a little of the work from the Communication Team in a few minutes.
deanna moreau
01:55:40
Great question Kris and thanks for the response Debbie! I was already thinking as districts consider budget decisions, having this info and being able to plan according to the roadmap would be helpful.
David Van Vleet
01:56:01
Is the plan that ALL grade 8 students will take the 8th grade math course? All grade 9 students take the 9th grade course? etc...
Tina Mazzacane - VDOE
01:56:58
A heterogeneous model is the vision for the VMPI Essential Concepts courses
Sandra Harris
01:57:24
So remove Algebra 1 from middle school?
Brian Nussbaum
01:57:56
Essential Concepts 8 would include Algebraic as well as other areas of mathematical study.
Brian Nussbaum
01:58:15
There would be no more 'Algebra I' course
Rebecca Vernon
01:58:19
I am wondering the same thing. We offer Algebra 1 in 7th, should that be removed and everyone in 7th grade do 7th grade math?
Leslie Murphy Brown
01:58:46
I love the idea of heterogeneous classes in this vision, but that means teachers will need to increase their use of differentiation, which I feel also means a need to provide intensive training on what differentiation actually looks like. I find almost all teachers can define differentiation, but there is a large percentage don't truly understand what it LOOKS like.
Kristin Williams
01:59:22
very true Leslie. PD on differentiation will be a huge component.
Nicole Akers
01:59:33
In LCPS we have many 6th graders in Algebra, more 7th graders in Algebra. I feel like this will stop the hurry up and finish mentally around math. I am very excited to be a part of these much needed changes!
Tina Mazzacane - VDOE
01:59:57
Teachers will need support in developing differentiation and small group instructional models, along with support for developing content knowledge
Amelia Woodall
02:00:48
So would this work in conjunction with the updating of the SOLs in 2023?
David Van Vleet
02:01:09
I like how the emphasis of the 8-10 content focuses on the relevancy of why students are learning the mathematics. It isn't because we have always taught that concept.
Brian Nussbaum
02:01:32
2023 standards would be fully implemented in 2025 when current 2nd graders are 8th graders for EC8
deanna moreau
02:02:44
Such a great point!!!!! Love the connections between disciplines!!!!
Kristin Williams
02:02:44
Tina will share a timeline after Ian finishes his presentation on essential concepts
deanna moreau
02:03:51
Love the emphasis on the Big Ideas!!!!!
Sandra Harris
02:04:16
Will colleges begin preparing teachers soon for this design?
Terri Roettinger
02:04:30
Is there a way we can collaborate with the other content coordinators in developing the projects content ideas?
Terri Roettinger
02:05:03
I wish that our science content was better aligned with our math content goals
Fiona Nichols
02:05:06
This is great work!
Shamika Carey
02:05:15
I love this!
Jessica Clervoi
02:05:25
I’m wondering when or how they plan to change teacher prep programs to fit this model and prepare new teachers for the changes. Or at least prep them coming into the transition.
Nicole Akers
02:05:29
How are we planning to communicate this to districts? I am thinking about doing the catalyzing change book study with my directors and asst. sups. Just wondering what can be started now?
Justin Maffei
02:05:32
Terri, we had the science team with us when we worked through some of the essential concepts
kristin Rojas
02:05:35
Thank you- This is Awesome!
Justin Maffei
02:06:07
The computer science team was with us as well...in an effort to align where appropriate
Carol Walsh
02:06:19
Thanks Ian!!
Debra Kinsey
02:06:20
Yes, this is exciting
Terri Roettinger
02:06:23
Awesome -- I am working locally with my colleagues in developing connections between our contents in this distant learning time
Sherri DiNoia
02:06:55
Thank you. These are changes to get excited about.
Justin Maffei
02:07:07
Yes, Terri, in regards to the connections, we're seeing a much greater alignment with the essential concepts and those traditional science skills in the courses at those levels
Leslie Murphy Brown
02:07:10
It would be nice if we could provide a document highlighting where math and science could provide an integrated project/concept study for each grade level. It can be overwhelming to determine and providing this may help us to see more interdisciplinary discussions.
Rhonda White
02:07:26
I’m sure this will include collaboration of magnet and specialty high schools.
David Van Vleet
02:08:18
Has this high level presentation been provided to each of our divisions leadership?
Kristin Williams
02:08:24
Survey:https://forms.gle/FT9zx6WfMdTT6ob56
Debbie Delozier
02:08:59
David - this has not been shared with division leaders yet.
Fiona Nichols
02:09:50
Do you want one from from each division?
Debbie Delozier
02:11:08
Fiona - I think the intent is that everyone would complete the survey.
Ian Shenk
02:11:17
We'd love individual responses!
Kristin Williams
02:11:37

Deb Crawford
02:12:00
Agree!! Tina, Brian & Ian = INSPIRING!
David Van Vleet
02:18:23
I think this is a huge step in addressing the EQUITY concern in mathematics acceleration.
deanna moreau
02:18:42
We have to look at it as an opportunity to make some much needed changes!!!!
Tonya Fields-Hines
02:19:02
This is wonderful...
DEBORAH BLISS
02:19:42
I agree, David. I work primarily with small school divisions. The inequities lie not only in resources available to students, but also teachers and the availability of teachers. This will be huge.
Leslie Murphy Brown
02:20:43
Curious...are there any other states who have made this shift?
Brian Nussbaum
02:21:24
NC has an integrated curriculum. Several other states are in the explorations phase along with VA.
Kenneth Yowell
02:21:30
The state of Alabama has used the book in revamping their math standards.
DEBORAH BLISS
02:21:51
This was the big idea behind common core. Successfully implemented? Not too many. I would think NC is doing it as well as anyone.
Amy Hickey
02:22:23
With Virginia supporting so many military bases and the pentagon and our initiative to support our military families it might be helpful to having a mapping for students who come from a more traditional sequence to this well needed sequence so they receive their credits and are placed so they continue to grow.
Pam Walker
02:23:13
Will we plan to move away form MC SOL Assessments and move toward PBA"s
Ian Shenk
02:23:34
I need 2 minutes.
Leslie Murphy Brown
02:23:55
Great question, Pam! I was wondering that also.
Brian Nussbaum
02:24:53
There will need to be a full rework of SOL testing. This is a part of the overall considerations.
Leslie Murphy Brown
02:25:51
Brian...I'm interested to see what this "full rework" will look like.
Sandra Harris
02:25:57
Just want to make sure small, rural schools are represented in your work as it will be more difficult for rural schools to staff teachers and support many courses with smaller enrollments. This is exciting but small schools will have big challenges.
Sue Jenkins
02:26:29
Thank you to all of you!
Beth Burnap
02:26:40
Thank you to everyone!
Brian Nussbaum
02:26:43
Small districts are definitely in mind. Eager for opportunities to do resources and collaboration between districts.

02:26:51
Thanks VDOE team, Ian and Brian:)
