A huge challenge here with "pumping

A huge challenge in "pumping" is how guidance schedules students. Perhaps VCMS could develop a document to spell out the importance of four years of math for ll students

That race to calc also puts students in a situation where they either take the SAT after algebra 2 when they're freshmen or sophomores and not as mature OR they take the SAT/ACT their junior year after they've forgotten some of the simpler concepts learned in Algebra 2.

I completely agree with Jared. I was one of those student back when I was in HS. I took an SAT prep class to refresh my memory on Geometry and Algebra 2 before taking the SAT because it has been 2 years since I had those courses before I took the test. I'm not sure if all HS offer an SAT prep course like I was able to take, but if not, then our students could actually be at a disadvantage.

My school system doesn't currently offer a SAT prep class; so my students are at a HUGE disadvantage. I will push harder to implement that class at my school. (I am an AP/AD at Alleghany High School on the WV/VA border.

What better time to do this now that we have so much COVID data and possibly no SOL assessments...

We, as a community of practitioners in Virginia, have had this conversation semi-continuously since 1987. I would offer now, as Betti Kreye and I offered in 1987+ that the key to catalyzing mathematics for students is catalyzing change in teachers K-12 and at the collegiate level. Integral to change for K-12 instruction lies in change in administrators as much as in teachers.

I agree "playing the game of school" allows students to receive an "a" but not understand math to the depth it seems they do.

Access to quality resources and a community of support for teachers would help. This amazing shift in practices could happen. However teachers need continued intentional support going forward.

Agreed, Tonya! Unfortunately, some math teachers (regardless of grade level) struggle teaching math from a conceptual standpoint so students truly understand the procedural aspect. If the emphasis is going deeper and having a deeper understanding, that means (to me) that students have a higher level of conceptual understanding and teachers may need help in understanding that themselves.

If students need to get 2 credits during 11th and 12th grade year and they choose to do the 1/2 credit courses, how would that work if schools are not on a semester/block schedule?

When I was in high school about 100 years ago, our English classes consisted of choices every 9 weeks. It was student choice based on interest.

That would be convenient to tailor some of my math classes towards interests in my area and my vocational school. The good ol' boys and girls would love more hands on math and less theory.

How will pilot school divisions be selected?

Piloting of the "new" advanced mathematics concepts courses will be paired with professional learning for divisions - the capacity for professional learning will most likely drive the piloting options

Terry - I agree. I wonder if the grant money could be used like it was used in the math specialist endorsement focus

Certification and licensing are a consideration and are being discussed by the VMPI leadership and with VDOE leadership

Are there examples for students who are not interested in college?

The sample pathways could include students entering vocations or the workplace based on the career being pursued

I am verge excited about the possibilities moving forward! I believe this will benefit our students immensely.

I know the Rural Math Initiative was working on helping connect math to 2-year community college programs and certification programs for those student who did not wish to go on to a 4-year college and that information was very enlightening. I wonder if that information can be coupled with the current listing of career clusters here??

I love the direction we’re headed! Thank you to all of you who are working on this initiative.

I’m excited to see this roll out because I fee it will take the focus away from the hierarchy placed with different maths and place it on a deeper understanding of math skills and concepts. No longer forcing teachers and students to rush through concepts for the sake of getting it done without the chance for a deeper understanding.

As a group, we need to create a roadmap for sharing this with out school divisions so we share a common message.

A heterogeneous model is the vision for the VMPI Essential Concepts courses

So remove Algebra 1 from middle school?

Essential Concepts 8 would include Algebraic as well as other areas of mathematical study.

There would be no more 'Algebra I' course

I am wondering the same thing. We offer Algebra 1 in 7th, should that be removed and everyone in 7th grade do 7th grade math?

I love the idea of heterogeneous classes in this vision, but that means teachers will need to increase their use of differentiation, which I feel also means a need to provide intensive training on what differentiation actually looks like. I find almost all teachers can define differentiation, but there is a large percentage don't truly understand what it LOOKS like.

very true Leslie. PD on differentiation will be a huge component.

In LCPS we have many 6th graders in Algebra, more 7th graders in Algebra. I feel like this will stop the hurry up and finish mentally around math. I am very excited to be a part of these much needed changes!

So would this work in conjunction with the updating of the SOLs in 2023?

I like how the emphasis of the 8-10 content focuses on the relevancy of why students are learning the mathematics. It isn't because we have always taught that concept.

Yes, Terri, in regards to the connections, we're seeing a much greater alignment with the essential concepts and those traditional science skills in the courses at those levels

It would be nice if we could provide a document highlighting where math and science could provide an integrated project/concept study for each grade level. It can be overwhelming to determine and providing this may help us to see more interdisciplinary discussions.

I agree, David. I work primarily with small school divisions. The inequities lie not only in resources available to students, but also teachers and the availability of teachers. This will be huge.

Curious...are there any other states who have made this shift?

NC has an integrated curriculum. Several other states are in the explorations phase along with VA.

The state of Alabama has used the book in revamping their math standards.

This was the big idea behind common core. Successfully implemented? Not too many. I would think NC is doing it as well as anyone.

With Virginia supporting so many military bases and the pentagon and our initiative to support our military families it might be helpful to having a mapping for students who come from a more traditional sequence to this well needed sequence so they receive their credits and are placed so they continue to grow.

There will need to be a full rework of SOL testing. This is a part of the overall considerations.

Brian...I'm interested to see what this "full rework" will look like.

Just want to make sure small, rural schools are represented in your work as it will be more difficult for rural schools to staff teachers and support many courses with smaller enrollments. This is exciting but small schools will have big challenges.
