Nancy Day
32:58
Wondering what PE will look like?
Lauren Mead
33:02
@Nicole - to be honest, I don’t think many parents in my area will pay for a virtual after school program. There is so much out there for free, plus it wouldn’t be worth the cost to run something like that
Karri Kiss
33:03
We are hearing Group A Monday/Tuesday, no students Wednesday, Group B Thursday/Friday in our District.
Nicole Goggin, GNG
33:38
@Lauren, no worries. Our programs are free! That makes total sense that especially now, people may not have the funds.
Lauren Mead
33:50
That’s great!!
Candace Burke
33:58
We in CT have 13 before and afterschool programs housed in public schools which have been closed since 3/13 as well. Don’t think its feasible for summer program to take place as per the strict guidelines. We have to wait to see how the fall school reopening for how their day will be and then what will our program will be able to serve and use.
Matrex Kilgore
34:04
How do we insure that we are protecting our employees? Texas is talking about opening things up as soon as June 1.
Nathan Winegar
34:09
If you have a rolling school attendance to serve 25% of the population to adhere to social distancing, you then cannot provide full day services at the school because those spaces will then not be available for OST. Also, I love the creativity of hearing about ‘virtual’ OST, but that does not help working families at all. They need onsite care so they can work.
Lorraine Rubin
34:58
HOw are working parents going to get back to work every day if kids are alternating school days?
Kim Bishop
35:28
Nathan that is exactly the situation our programs are in. We are looking at rental spaces in the area...
Heidi Ham, NAA
35:52
If you haven't already - make sure OST and your organization have representation in these planning conversations with schools!
Kari Taylor
36:36
Is anyone requiring all employees to have health insurance whether it be with your company or elsewhere?
Carrie Lienemann
36:38
If you move off-site, how would you provide transportation? Does social distancing apply on a bus? How does that look?
Ross Hargis
36:41
If schools only have a small portion of students in them each day, how are all the other students going to get fed? We are 100% free, so our students need that!
Ann Tancioco
36:56
For organizations that do not receive state or federal funding, what our funding options are there?
Kim Bishop
37:27
Our school system has bussed students from primary school to intermediate school. I am asking them to do the same if we rent an offsite location.
Lauren Mead
37:38
Transportation for regular schooling is going to be an issue - our district wouldn’t be able to handle adding more stops to the route with only 20% capacity for busses
Kathy Goodman
38:20
How are schools handling busing students?
Carrie Lienemann
38:25
would every child need a tote that holds their own supplies? no sharing legos, blocks, crayons, pens etc. each tote would need sanitized weekly? Daily?
Lorraine Rubin
38:28
Most of our children at this Club are children of Teachers
Virginia Walker
38:36
Yes, our county was already short 150 bus drivers before this happened.

43:52
Hi @L.KimoRichardson
Nathan Winegar
44:05
One of the major obstacles is going to be finances. By keeping PRIVATE businesses closed (unemployment), the state does not have money coming into its coffers. This will in turn cause programs to shut down due to lack of funding. Look for a lot of school district layoffs, next spring. Which then in turn, hurts OST programs both financially and in numbers with lack of need.
Ann Tancioco
44:09
Are you looking at different rate structures to address each option? Or are all the programs subsidized?
L. Kimo Richardson
44:23
Hi @denise nichols!
Carrie Lienemann
44:45
Masks, gloves, sanitizing supplies will be big budget items this year. How are all of you paying for this? We have already encountered lots of things being out of stock to order in bulk.
Matrex Kilgore
45:37
@Carrie, I'm really concerned about this aspect. I agree with the SEL and Trauma based practices. How are we protecting them physically?
Heidi Ham, NAA
46:36
Relationships continue to be the most important thing.
Lauren Mead
46:43
I will assess our fees once I know more about what fall will look like. If ratios are significantly lower, our fees will have to increase to pay for additional staff. Then there is the element of purchasing PPE for staff/children…so many aspects to consider
Shannon Sneed, City of Redondo Beach, Ca
46:52
We have furloughed our staff so we can't have our staff interact with the kids since they are not working.

Ann Tancioco
55:01
I agree, flexibility and creativity is needed in this different way of addressing afterschool. During the shelter-in-place, keeping connections with children, families and staff were important. We established a Communications Team that contributed to a weekly newsletter to families and weekly staff digest to staff. There were weekly posts to our Facebook page where staff shared activities (some of them were videos of our own staff) even a virtual egg hunt on our website. This team also researched great resources to share with families and with staff.

We initially brainstormed what issues we needed to address in preparing to reopen. We then created workgroups to answer the questions we all had in preparing to reopen. They were charged to assess our current practices, research new guidelines and recommendations and develop training. We also reached out to providers who provided essential care during the shelter-in-place to learn from them. We are launching our training modules next week to all our staff before we reopen.

@Ally Agree. We’re trying to wait until there’s a bit more clarity. @Lauren, thanks for that information. Helpful to know people might put them aside at least for a later date or when there is more clarity.

@caitlin We’re looking to adapt our online program to an offline workbook. We want to make sure we’re reaching as many youth as possible, especially now given so many youth rely on school resources. If you’re interested, feel free to email me: Nicole@gng.org
