Are there any tools that Panorama or other agencies might have that can be used to gauge where students and staff are at? In terms of emotional health, trauma, etc at the start of the school year?

38:42
What I’ve heard often in some of the other CharacterStrong webinars that always resonates with me is the idea that this work…for ourselves and our students is that this isn’t just something more to add to our plate…this is the plate. We have to prioritize this and make this a foundational focus! For adult and student SEL!

41:29
“normalization of discomfort!” acknowledging the current reality that is always changing. we are in this together.

41:35
I did a staff wellness Wednesday. Going from weekly staff positive interactions to next year where we will now have Character Strong curriculum and not just have weekly interactions but a whole systematic change of "going to the gym" and WORKING on our own character. I got approval this next year to do Character Dares or activities every staff meeting for 5 minutes. So excited!

41:42
I work with behavioral Middle Schoolers. We introduced Mindfulness in the beginning of the year. They were totally against it at first...so we just...started doing it...every day...and before we knew it...they wanted to take turns tapping the chime before and after our sessions. They really grew to enjoy and look forward to our daily mindfulness.

42:09
That’s awesome @chris

44:28
We hung our note on our door...saying.."please enter quietly. We are practicing mindfulness".. This kept the interruptions of people coming in to a minimum.

44:52
Our district is solely focusing on SEL for the first 30 days when we return in the fall

44:54
I love the door sign idea!

44:58
[Click to Tweet]: "If we're not in a mindset to learn, students aren't going to learn. As the adult leader, we need to be actively engaged. Model SEL and be present with students in the moment." Fredricka Hunter on @PanoramaEd’s webinar: Reimagining Tier 1 with @careacter + @RacineUnified #SEL https://ctt.ac/eqI71

45:08
We need to take a day prior to students coming back to model these mindful moments to teachers. Teach them how to as well as experience it.

45:20
“if we aren’t in a mindset to learn-we are not going to learn.”!! YES!

45:22
YES - We’re the constant!

45:24
I had my Kinders practice mindfulness during zoom with just deep breathing especially when they started to argue with their parents during our sessions.

45:29
@Gabriel...thanx!

45:57
^Sylvia YES! +100

46:08
Is there a way to get all the resources being suggested by attendees on a spreadsheet? They are zooming by too fast. :0

46:10
Second Step is like that also

46:18
We had 10 minute yoga / breathing built into our mornings in Elementary - it’s a total reset

46:23
I am sure parents will be much more "pro-teacher" now more than ever, and we can get them to buy in to our mindfulness and other strategies.

46:26
@Skye, we’ll send the chat!

46:28
I think...in our district...we do have a problem with adult buy in.

46:38
Awesome, thanks!

46:49
Yes..once they start it..they realize the importance of it..

46:49
Adult by in is HUGE! I am more concerned about supporting staff and finding out where they are first.

47:01
@marla that’s the toughest when adults don’t buy in

47:16
My school has a yoga teacher who teaches yoga once a week to all grade levels as part of their gym/phys ed grades. Our yoga teacher made short videos every Friday for us to continue mindfulness (for teachers/staff and students).

47:24
One of the positives about virtual learning is that parents are able to observe character ed and mindfulness strategies with their children and that it can be done at a very young age.

47:37

47:41
Chair yoga is awesome and fun, and safe!

47:49
@Alison — Inner Explorer!

47:55
https://innerexplorer.org/

48:09
I think teachers will be given a lot of leeway to experiment and try mindfulness and character building and other ways to connect.

48:51
What are the thoughts on combining a daily routine of Mindfulness/Restorative Justice Circles that includes staff and students?

48:55
It surely starts with the adults...realizing the importance of this. I think teachers are under so much pressure with all that is expected from them. Now, finally...everyone will realize the importance of this subject.

49:03
@Jennifer, thanks for your question - added to the Q&A

49:28
There is no perfect... look for progress

49:49
That is my concern Maria....will that just start all over again once we get back to school. will anyone remember that we need to pay attention to SEL for both adults and kids

49:49
What are some strategies for helping

49:54
Yes, restorative! We can work on mindfulness and at the same time, accept and address our White Fragility.

49:55
Oh! Thank you :)

50:08
We need to start intentionally with teachers as there will be some who believe that they just need to get back to "Normal ASAP rather than walking students to the place to learn.

50:15
we told our kids..to be anywhere in the room they were comfortable. Chair, floor, bean bag..etc. eyes open..eyes closed...however they were comfortable..

50:21
Yes Gabriel !

50:25
I am engaging our elementary students enrolled in summer program in mindfulness practice. They love it!

50:48
Yoga 4 Classrooms is an awesome easy to use program for mindfulness and yoga (including seated yoga poses)

50:51
https://go.panoramaed.com/mindfulness-resource-pack

51:01
I have seen teachers who put into place a little bit of consistent mindfulness/breathing and saw such a difference in their 6th graders....3 min start to their day gave them 20 extra min of teaching/learning & connection!!!

51:14
Zones of Regulation is a great tool for any age for emotional regulation.

52:11
cognitive kids yoga

52:23
yes!!!!!! so many people forget tier 1 strategies when students need additional help

52:37
Thank you for recognizing the challenges of implementing SEL at the secondary level!

52:42
Some kids will be upset when we have to go back to school; due to a long break for them. Others will be eager to be back inthe classroom. WE have to address both.

53:11
agree @Felicia!!

53:40
Reminder to please share chats with “all panelists and attendees” so everyone can share in your perspectives

53:50
Middle and High Schools need this too.

54:03
[Click to Tweet]: "One of the biggest problems is that once we get into secondary schools, the response is: 'our kids are done with it.' Teachers view it as elementary because most strategies are designed to support K-5. We need resources to support secondary educators." @johnnorlin @PanoramaEd https://ctt.ac/4HwV3

54:04
Also as the kids grow older, they see discrepancy between what they are being asked to do—responsible, respectful and kind and what staff are doing in interactions with the students.

54:06
YES! Late night check in!!! I miss those!

54:14
That great !

54:25
That’s important

54:26
Discussion is now ongoing to have SEL at the College and University levels

54:46
love Erin Jones!!!

54:46
Yes! They wanted that connection and socialization! Great idea!

54:49
John..we need MORE of this...real life conversationg..

54:53
Yes, a space to talk together and be connected with others!

54:56
Yes, so so good

54:57
https://characterstrong.com/curricula/gym

55:13
At the college and university level is very important. That is another huge transition where life just changes and students need those supports

55:37
What the challenge seems to be is how to transition from each tier and make it relevant and useful

56:23
Laura - exactly on point - Thanks for addressing that too

56:46
Adult SEL toolkit - https://go.panoramaed.com/adult-sel-social-emotional-learning-toolkit

56:50
Thank you! It is so important that when schools select a "product" that they make sure their folks are trained how to use it. There are so many SEL products that do not require training--they make it optional.

56:53
It is so interesting, calming, and natural. I can't understand why some adults have such an issue with it.

56:58
Teaching everyone to see others as people with their own needs and goals so true

57:17
I agree. Great point.

57:36
yes John! no “shoulds” students should know this... well, if they don’t, then as educators, let’s teach them!

57:48
[Racine SEL Data Inquiry Training - Winter 2017] https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1M3sZw6M57_tK9T_Pal3MWo-jJFAJNfxEVsH5f2XSQp8/edit#slide=id.g29fed580e8_0_796

57:52
Adults have to be comfortable with it themselves before they share with their students.

58:05
that is great becky

58:31
Yes, Fredericka!!! Thank you!

58:49
A way to judge someone's character is to observe them treat others who can do nothing for them.

58:50
@Linda - the adult sel toolkit are reflective exercises and activities for adults

58:57
https://go.panoramaed.com/adult-sel-social-emotional-learning-toolkit

58:58
Relationships and listening...not try to justify.

59:01
It’s all about relationships…that is where it has to start!!!

59:16
Rita Pierson TED talk is awesome!

59:33
This is foundational and absolutely necessary to understand why there are differences and how and why our Ladders often collide and often result in conflict.

59:35
So true - we cannot assume

59:41
Also to remember because someone has experienced a trauma does not make them mentally ill!!. Research suggests that biologically we often will recover on our own as the body works to return to homeostasis. Given that, quick interventions to “fix” the problem can be counterproductive.

59:43
[Click to Tweet]: “To make #SEL work in secondary settings, we need to narrow the focus, make time for it & make it as low-burden as possible on the system.” @johnnorlin on @PanoramaEd’s webinar: Reimagining Tier 1 with @careacter + @RacineUnified #wholechild #SEL #socialemotionallearning #edchat https://ctt.ac/Sc3WY

59:49
Yes, relationships matter hugely!

01:00:13
They won't care how much we know until they know how much we care.

01:00:36
Great point Gabriel.

01:00:49
Values clarification - who do YOU want to be? Thanks for sharing, John.

01:01:07
John - on target from my Point on View - Character is hard to build and so easy to destroy

01:01:13
Purpose as self-care. Love that!

01:01:20
Where do we ‘meet’ as individuals in the moment?

01:01:24
Yes...great point. People do things for their reasons not ours.

01:01:30
[Click to Tweet]: "We know the skillsets of SEL are critically important. But the character education component can get into our values and purpose. The role of purpose (especially when there is a ton of adversity around us) is that it can be a form of self-care." @johnnorlin on Reimagining Tier 1 https://ctt.ac/kHczb

01:01:43
Character Development/Education and SEL have been a focus in education for years--what is it that is going to make it last this time?

01:02:12
It is how we bring it together that is going to make it different.

01:02:16
@Kay - how is social emotional learning and character development built into the strategic plan? https://www.panoramaed.com/social-emotional-learning-sel

01:02:27
Make the teacher lounges...more personal. Comfy chairs, relaxing music...etc.

01:02:37
I meant..staff lounges

01:02:48
and how do we make it stick and not just fade into the night as we go back to "normal"?

01:02:49
We need to change the concept and use of a "staff lounge" :)

01:02:53
Normalizing the pause and taking a moment yes!

01:02:54
a wellness approach

01:02:57
Collabing/discussing/sharing like this helps me feel validated as a professional and uplifts me to keep on!!

01:03:24
@Jennifer...yes...

01:03:25
Fredrika - How do you establish a climate of Non-Judgement

01:03:44
Leadership makes a HUGE difference, so critical

01:04:01
If the mind thinks with a believing attitude, one can do amazing things for teachers, families and students.

01:04:02
I agree, Jennifer. The "teacher's lounge" concept needs to change.

Ask teachers what they want/need to feel safe, use self-care tools, have a sense of bonging

01:05:14
Thank you.

01:05:15
yes, the kids notice if adults are talking negatively about each other...

01:05:16
Before COVID, I was working on transforming out staff lounge, my gaol was to have a space that included massage chairs! ;)

01:05:21
Leadership is about people and influence - Management is about things - Teaching is a people business as is Leadership

01:05:24
Google" Teacher Lounge in Finland" Loved it

01:06:00
Can Multiple Intelligences be used for SEL?

01:06:14
If between the pandemic and the race and equity issues have not opened peoples eyes...to the importance of all this....?

01:06:41
I think it's essential that we are intentional about creating spaces for staff (when I use the word staff, I mean ALL staff, not just certificated) where they can put on their "oxygen masks" so they can then put them on students when needed.

01:06:42
[Click to Tweet]: "We manage things, but we lead people. Leadership is different from management. Learning to lead the work, cast a vision & navigate difficult decisions is hard. But we don't often invest in training leaders." @johnnorlin on Reimagining Tier 1 @PanoramaEd @careacter @RacineUnified https://ctt.ac/hdc74

01:07:24
Creating a non-judgmental space is to provide the time without question. You need a break; if I can provide it for you I'm on my way. I'm here if you want to process and the same confidence that I provide my students I provide for my staff. If you don't want to process that's okay as well. As individuals I believe we love to feel supported.

01:07:40
Because of this crisis, the role and perception of the teacher will change, for the better, forever.

01:08:22
@Gabriel...I think that, too. and Paras....to. ALL

Teachers we need you - what a rallying cry!

01:11:09
And permission to ask for help, to lean on. Some school cultures aren’t quite there yet, where it’s safe to emote and lean in.

01:11:33
Good point !

01:13:47
How can I commit to be ready for something unknown ?

01:14:02
Providing the tools is KEY. It’s not that teachers don’t want to do it; it’s that they don’t know how.

01:14:31
Strong adult professional learning with tools that require little to know prep to implement.

Right now, I am up against a staff readiness issue with implementing advisory and SEL learning. I think the next step needs to be healing the staff relationships and building collective efficacy through SEL strategies.
