22:10
Focus groups

22:45
This is he survey that my district sent out

23:00
I think schools need to be welcoming to parents.

23:15
surveys, parent given info. in person phone, e-mail

23:33
this is so important!!!!!!!!!!

23:33
Hi Stephanie — we noticed you clicked on the ‘raise your hand’ button. Is there anything we can help you with?

24:20
I always try to have the connection and engagement with families since Day 1

24:47
Yes Keisha. Since the onset of violence, schools have limited welcoming parents. I think in the interested of Physical safety, we have harmed our emotional connection to Parents and families.

24:48
Google meets, meetings in person, etc

24:49
I thin the bet way to increase engagement is by establishing relationships. I make sure to attend all school events and actually speak with and listen to parents about their concerns

25:42
Texting with parents has transformed our partnership

26:02
Jessica, yes I agree; however some schools weren't very welcoming long before COVID.

26:25
relationship creates trust, trust , engagement and then partnership and the results is academic success for our students

27:08
Nodding*

27:41
In our district, they began shutting ou and limiting visitors because of increased school invasions.

27:48
Tech is friend and foe :)

28:29
@Jessica what does “increased school invasions” mean?

28:38
I understand Jimena because the kiddos that I have taught are like that parents that not speak English that much, but is important to have cultural backgrounds of the families and students and how we can approach, help them!!! Is so important to have all the resources, to help them, I'm Puertorican It feels so good to be bilingual and help all families specially the Hispanic families

29:57
Yes, the more flexible the school is to accommodate parents, the more welcoming they may feel.

30:16
I have seen when families are engaged we build and grow together! Families feel safe, and they can trust , and show them they are important in their child' education!! my motto and what we say: We are a family we are a Team!

30:48
yaaasss! Families have vast funds of knowledge educators can tap into!

30:58
“sunshine calls” ❤️

31:20
YES!! Sunshine calls need to happen all year through. If the only time parents gets calls is when their child is acting out, they'll stop answering the phones at some point.

31:58
What I LOVE ALSO I HAVE LEARN FROM THE FAMILIES BECAUSE THERE SOME WORDS THAT HAVE A DIFFERENT MEANING to me!!! this is so important families are engaged

34:08
Great question, we used a spreadsheet as a grade level team to split up students and then entered notes on our data system. We would meet for 15 minutes to talk about sunshine calls and then gave staff 45 minutes to make them!

35:46
@marylee thank you for sharing - Intentional relationship outreach by teachers and support staff is vital at the start of the school year and helps build a stronger home-school-student relationship more easily. Having a Student Survey at beginning of school year can help student learn about families they are serving.

35:59
Some parents have tremendous challenges, e.g., food insecurity, addition, other illnesses, etc. They may not respond to surveys. And they are the ones that educators "blame" for achievement gaps.

37:02
Nodding ^ that is data when we do not hear from families - how can we listen and learning a variety of ways

37:27
Yes @jimena - what a great community you are a part of

37:49
yes so true!!! is important to look in different ways to impact families!!

39:26
Yes.
