Years ago, someone I was working with described me as their mentor. I was very surprised as I'd never thought of myself like that! It made me realise I had useful experiences to share that would help others.

When I was young I had to deal with a very difficult client. Finally one day I lost my temper with him over the phone. To my surprise he said he was pleased, and he says how a person behaves when they are angry is more important than when they are nice. After that he was very nice to me and treated me as an equal. I learnt that relationships need to be on an equal basis with mutual respect.

I think everyone has to play politics, it’s inevitable. What I try to do is to use my moral compass and always act with good intent.

I have mentored someone who felt their manager wasn’t supporting them. It was hard.
Chris Tham

I have also been on other side of fence, where an employee felt I was not supporting them. There are often multiple sides to a story, and it helps to realise everyone is a human being, and sometimes your manager is constrained as well.

In my job relationships are very important, they make the difference whether what I do is successful or not. I am probably not as good at relationship building as I like
