William Tench
27:58
Why didn’t he promote it after that?
William Tench
28:11
Could’ve, should’ve, would’ve isn’t leadership on UBI.
nick sandford
28:37
it was our policy for a while in the 1990s but then got dropped

Did Ed just quote four types of liberalism? - I thought that was Liberal Reform's approach, not SLF! ;-) :-D
William Barter
38:08
oooooo - good spot Andrew!
nick sandford
38:53
maybe he thinks he needs their votes¬
TERRY LEWIS
41:25
radical meets properly rooted or founded. we should get back to the roots of the Lib Dem party in true liberalism while it appears we have become more and more illiberal
Zhen Biao Chen
42:04
When you say that Terry, do you mean a smaller gov or culturally?
Tristan Ward

I mean that statement I terms of what is now allowed in the party by way of different views and voices. Tim Farron was/is a god example.

A good interviewer just won't let Ed pivot onto his record, but will surely keep asking on the bedroom tax.

44:30
And Ed's record wasnt perfect either.....what about the sell out on nuclear energy?
William Barter
44:34
Ed can pivot here, I think, at SLF, but I don't see how Ed can do it with - for example - with Cathy Newman.
Simon Banks
44:42
The roots of liberalism are in the concept of active citizenship, of working freely for the common good. That's what the word meant before it became a party label and that's what it meant to many supporters through the 19th century. It's diametrically opposed to devil-take-the -hindmost economic individualism, but also to top-down statism.
Simon Banks
45:58
So devolution and real democracy in the state are crucial.
Stephen Hesketh
46:00
Well said Simon
David Rogers
46:44
Another 'upvote' from me to the Simon Banks comment...
Kathy Grant
47:03
Why are people still going on about the coalition? It was over several years ago and so much has changed since then.
Martin Horwood
47:24
You don’t squeeze the Labour vote in places like here in Cheltenham just once. It bounced up again in 2017 with students etc voting for Corbyn. We need Labour & Green votes here in Cheltenham, in Oxford & other Tory-facing seats to help get us over the line.
nick sandford
47:52
good point, Martin
Sarah Green
49:21
Re: Wales… we are “in the game”. The education minister in the Senedd is the excellent Liberal Democrat Kirsty Williams
nick sandford
51:01
historically as a party we always do better in coalitions with labour than with the tories.... the govt in scotland from 1999 to 2007 is a good example
Jon Alexander (Live Q&A host)

There seems to be an naivity about power here - especially for minor parties in a coalition. Power means getting your hands dirty. I want the Lib Dems to be the people exercising power, and I will put up with people getting their hands dirty as long as they are Liberal Democrat hands.
Simon Banks
55:34
I'm not sure Scots will like being described as a massive iceberg, though it is a bit chilly up there.
Natasha Chapman
57:21
Political parties are a means to an end, to achieve political goals, not a football team. So no, I wasn't particularly comforted by the Liberal Democrat hands pushing regressive policies in government.
nick sandford
58:09
I agree Natasha
nick sandford
01:00:39
I like Ed's optimism but when has the BBC ever given us good coverage?
William Barter
01:01:14
Thanks for asking and answering my question! :)
William Barter
01:01:53
I really liked Layla's answer - the idea of putting together that broad coalition of voters, getting the progressive vote behind us and appealing to moderate Tories.
William Barter
01:02:11
It felt to me like Charles Kennedy's style?

"I wasn't particularly comforted by the Liberal Democrat hands pushing regressive policies in government." You pays your money - you take your choice. No power, no reduction in tax for the poorest. No increase in power frm renewable energy. No gay marriage. Realsitically - colation is the only way we will get power for the freeable future.
Julian Blewett
01:10:54
this is exactly the same approach our Lib Dems education minister in Wales is taking and bringing huge structural changes to education in Wales
Zhen Biao Chen
01:12:50
Layla just heckled Ed!!
Martin Horwood
01:13:39
I thought universal childcare policy was developed by Layla?!
Zhen Biao Chen
01:13:50
Exactly!
Georgia Sydes
01:13:54
Did Ed even say any new policy ideas or just repeat what other people have developed?
Zhen Biao Chen
01:14:11
Hi Martin! I contacted you a while back about populism however have yet to receive a response :/
Tristan Ward
01:16:09
Grabbing other people's policies and articualting them is good polictics!
Martin Horwood
01:17:20
Not spotted that sorry Chen. Prob not the forum for this discussion! Email martin@martinhorwood.net after the event.

Jon Alexander (Live Q&A host)
01:19:07

Zhen Biao Chen
01:19:20

Surrey Tories want to abolish the 11 boroughs and become one huge unitary authority, even though Surrey County Council is inefficient and broke.
nick sandford
01:19:57
ok
Zhen Biao Chen
01:20:02
Thank you Martin!

01:21:30
The Kingston devolution model was a really good system
Roger Hayes
01:22:24
It still is a good idea Nick
Keith Nevols
01:22:57
Kathy, they are thinking of doing that in Kent too, and Kent CC are also inefficient and broke (but it has been Conservative controlled forever).
Catherine Crosland
01:24:14
Hi Katharine :)
Jon Alexander (Live Q&A host)
01:28:46
