We are doing a technical check right now - thank you all for waiting. We appreciate your patience.

20:48
Jane, attendees cannot turn their mics and videos on. Please refer to the chat!

Deborah: I volunteered this past week too, it worked out.

28:12
It's not "corps"?

29:41
Alan, I think I signed up to volunteer through a different link so there might be two.

30:06
But I did have to schlep all the way up to Magin Mountain in Valencia.

30:13
Magic*

30:15
I was just thinking about in the mode of, say, "California Conservation Corps", but as a not-so-wise man said: it is what it is.

31:10
Is he getting cooperation from the General Services Administration?

36:49
Kayla: I”m just an attendee, but I see everyone :)

37:55
Hi Jen ~ me too! Although I think we only see “panelists”

38:28
Marcia, I think you’re right - that was in the email. That means I can sit ungracefully though, haha

38:58
I’ve got my scarf and earrings on - just in case!

39:03
I didn't get a VIP link, so I am assuming that I am a VUP.

39:07
Hi my most beautiful friend Deborah! <3

39:54
Jonathan, that means you registered early enough to be one of the special viewable folk

39:56
Time to upgrade your Zoom account!

40:19
SMDC learned the hard way LOL. Now we can have up to 1000 guests. :)

40:30
I was just thinking that, Jon! Upgraded zoom so everyone can be seen and heard. Democracy.

41:49
Couple of questions for Lieu:1) Does he think that the 50 Senate Democrats are all onboard with using reconciliation? What can we do to facilitate that?2)

42:30
2) What should a local Dem club be doing now to help Dems in Santa Clarita, AV, and OC to reclaim those seats, especially since we don't know the boundary lines yet?

43:32
Make sure to also check your spam/junk if you should’ve received a VIP link!

43:46
Question for Nick Melvoin:1) If we want schools to reopen, should we move teachers up in the queue to get vaccines?; and2) What is his opinion of the California Ethnic Studies Curriculum?

45:10
Question for Ben Allen: what is the progress on implementing the climate ADAPTATION report that came out from the Brown Administration a few years back, and how should local communities push forward on climate adaptation? (In particular, are we adequate in saving stormwater runoff for future use and if not why not?).

45:23
Love to hear thoughts about the Newsom recall efforts.

45:59
Another question for Ben Allen: Do you think it’s useful or worth your time to reintroduce the plastics phase out bill?

46:26
Question for Richard Bloom: what should the Pacific Palisades' fair share be for affordable housing units? There aren't any here. And which populations? Homeless vets, DV survivors, workforce housing, what?

47:18
Hi Jen, All! My question for Richard Bloom regards upgrading your previous legislation on whales, as the number of whales continues to increase in our region due to abundant squid population which is prey, but there is a squid fishery with bright lights and is attracting squid with lights and usurping the squid that is needed by the whales and seabirds and seals. The California Fish & Game Commission needs terminate commercial squid and so far that Commission continues to authorize and increase issuance of squid permits on our Southern California Coast off of Malibu and near the Channel Islands. Do you agree that your bill needs to be upgraded and improved. Peace, ‘Roy’

47:19
Question for Mike Bonin: what should the Pacific Palisades' fair share of affordable housing be and which sites do you think it should be?

49:05
Supervisor Kuehl and Mayor Garcetti - in the house!

50:21
I can only see 20 faces?

50:21
Erika has been such an incredible partner along with Santa Monica Dems, West LA Dems, and all the other Westside clubs at the Westside Democratic HQ.

51:19
Agreed Erica is amazing - Thank you for all your hard work

51:21
Thank you for your wonderful service, Erika!

51:33
652 days until the midterms.

52:11
I agree completely with Erika. Remember 2010! Let’s not let up our activism!

52:25
Thank You Erika for your leadership!

53:08
Erika is the best!!!

53:59
We’ve got to pass that bill this year! Yay, Ben Allen!

55:08
Commercial fishermen are some worst racists and sexists, republicans and do not like being regulated by our democratic government. I make this statement as FYI to accompany my question for Richard Bloom to protect our whales from starving as the commercial fishermen capture excessive amounts of squid off our coast, and then is sent to Japan for food by the wealthy. Save the Whales.

59:18
Thank you Ericka

01:00:00
I can’t raise mine for some reason

01:00:14
Thank you for your leadership, Erika!

01:01:09

Congratulations Steve and everyone else on the Board!! Looking forward to continuing our partnership of PPDC and SMDC!

01:01:34
Goodbye and thanks Erika, and welcome Steve! Excited for 2021!

Congratulations to Steve & all, and thank you for your leadership!

01:02:12
Thank you Erika for everything. Congratulations Steve - I know you'll be a great President

01:02:41
As was Melissa : )

01:03:04
Thank you Erika and Congratulations Steve - looking forward to 2021!

01:04:49
Senator Ben Allen. There is a state law needed to allow the Sea Otter to be in our 5 counties of Southern California, which would overrule the Fish & Game Commission ruling and the sister Department of Fish & Wildlife that made the Sea Otter illegal due to wishes of commercial abalone fishermen. However, there are no abalone in Southern California anymore because of the fishermen, not able to blame the Sea Otter as they were banned. The public that visit our coast are robbed of the opportunity to see the Sea Otter. Can you introduce legislation to override the Commission and Department regulations? Peace, ‘Roy’

Erika and Susan, I will miss you terribly! 💕

01:13:26
Hail but never farewell to Erika and Susan. You’ll always be invaluable compañeras in the long beautiful project of realizing in fact that other, possible, better world.

01:14:21
Mayor Garretti, would you please direct LAPD to give citation to people using leaf blowers? New op-ed, in Dallas Morning Star is excellent in explaining the issues. You can also write to Ralph Nader endorsed environmentalist with questions, whose email is pbahouth@gmail.com

01:14:52
We cannot see the Mayor on the screen.

01:15:24
Mayor Garcetti is pinned on screen. Are you in speaker view?

01:15:49

Happy Birthday Mr. Mayor!!!

01:19:50
Happy Birthday Mr. Mayor!! 🌺🌹

01:20:06
Robert, I read that op-ed and heard the leaf-blower activist on The Ralph Nader Radio Hour — important climate change issue!

01:21:00

01:24:03
Health, Education and Housing should absolutely be a Right! Thank you Mr. Mayor!

01:25:35
Adam, thanks. So glad you saw the Ralph Nader program on KPFK 90.7 today at noon, Sunday. I think our LA City Attorney and the Mayor have made a secret negotiation to not do citations or cases the expose in news articles in order to bring leaf blowing to an end in the City of Los Angeles. Peace , ‘Roy’

01:26:27
CA Medicare for All would be a significant response to having healthcare and housing a human right.

01:27:53
Can you take the many millions of dollars and investments in LADWP from their bank accounts, and spend on helping people in LA. Thanks, Mayor, for not doing so and educating us until now about the corruption of LADWP, and instead you praise the LADWP?

01:27:55
Everyone should know that then Councilman Garcetti was an early EV adopter with a 2002 Toyota RAV4EV!

01:30:16
EV cars use dirty fossil fuel of methane gas generators that make the electricity at Edison and the LADWP Electric plants. Sorry to burst the bubble for hose that like EV vehicles and hybrid Prius, as you pollute the Earth and hurt climate change just as those people that use gasoline engine cars. On and on …. Jus sayin…. Peace, ‘Roy’

01:30:48
Yes, Mr. Mayor!!! I'm on my 5th EV since 2002, a Tesla Model 3 and loving it. I'm a founding member of PlugInAmerica.org.

01:31:23
Love PlugInAmerica — thank you Dency!

01:32:24
City of LA has nuclear power plant, coal investments in Arizona, so we the mayor does not have a good environmental record, and has a bad environmental justice record for that reason as the Indigenous Navajo tribal people suffer due to our Mayor and LADW continuing with bad policies of coal and nuclear power.

01:32:34
A study by the establishment National Bureau of Economic Research, titled “Housing Precarity & the COVID-19 Pandemic: Impacts of Utility Disconnection and Eviction Moratoria on Infections and Deaths Across US Counties,” that found that policies forestalling evictions could have saved well over 150 thousand lives in the US through November had they been uniformly/universally implemented:

01:33:25
Thank you, Ted, for your amazing leadership!!!

Congratulations Erika and Susan! So deserved

01:34:08
Go Ted. You have courage and you are bold and that has genius showing in you. Please protect yourself and family and your close friends. Will you work to get the guns out of the hands of members of the House of Represenative in the Capitol, so you can be certain you are safe, and the public that comes to visit the Capitol?

01:34:40
congratulations to Erica and Susan for all you do to get Democrats elected. Big virtual hugs from Ingrid

01:34:57
Gah! Sorry that link to the paper on housing precocity and COVID came out so long. Here’s a better one: http://www.nber.org/papers/w28394

01:36:35
Even in the absence of the kind of federal relief that would have enable non-essential businesses and organizations to close and non-essential workers to stay home, that these measures focused on maintaining people’s housing is shown to have such a stunning effect on public health during a pandemic. If you wonder if that study can be relied on, see here for info about the organization that produced the report so that its credibility can be judged:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Bureau_of_Economic_Researchhttps://www.nber.org

01:36:38
Hi Ted. Why do you have California Real Estate Manuals on your book shelf? Where are environmnetal books on your shelf?

01:36:39
Congressman Lieu, Thank you for your consistent progressive leadership.

01:36:42
great Ted!

01:36:56
Thank you Rep. Lieu!!! Your leadership inspires us every day.

01:37:17
Congressman Lieu, glad to see you are a fan of The Mandalorian!

01:38:06
love #Grogu!

01:38:39
So proud to be your constituent!

01:39:02
Good point, Congressman Lieu! Thank you!

01:39:17
My representatives in Congress since I have been old enough to vote have been Father Robert Drinan and Tip O’Neill, both in Massachusetts, and Henry Waxman and Ted Lieu since moving to Santa Monica. I have been exceedingly well represented in the House and have grown quite spoiled….

01:39:34
Go Congressman Lieu! Can the California Congressional caucus find any way to help Democrats win the next congressional race to defeat Kevin McCarthy in Bakersfield and Kern County. He is a real problem and brings shame to California to have him as a fellow congressman?

01:39:58
Thank you so much for all your tireless work, Congressman Lieu. We are so proud and lucky to have you represent us.

01:40:00
So grateful you represent our District 33, Congressman Lieu. I appreciate your strength and fortitude!

01:40:00
So glad you are on the impeachment team, Rep. Lieu. Your sharp thinking will be helpful - hopefully in turning some minds and votes!

01:40:35
Roy, appreciate your admonition to do better, and we should all push for change. Let's also be appreciative of the environmental and progressive work the mayor has done, and recognize that despite not being perfectly clean, in the big picture EVs are superior to gas vehicles! We need an energy infrastructure overhaul, and President Biden and VP Harris are moving us in that direction, along with local electeds. There is hope, and solutions within reach!

01:40:42
We all could listen to Ted all say long, as should the entire country!

01:41:02
Thank you Ted!

01:42:22
Thank you Gail!

01:44:40
Gail thank you!!!

01:45:27
Thank you Allison for your work with Nick Melvoin and the LAUSD School Board : )

01:45:58
I first met Sheila at a then Assemblywoman Debra Bowen event in the Marina in the early 90s! Thank you Sheila for all of your leadership!

01:47:21
wWe appreciate you Supervisor

01:48:28
We’ve learned through the experience of the past few months the you can do a lot in engaging civically and politically through virtual means, but you can’t hug your supervisor. :-(

01:52:20
Mobile Vaccinations to communities that lack access is critical

01:54:17
In you supervisorial district in Sylmar, chemicals are placed around trees to kill weeds, but those chemicals hurt the trees and the tree trunks are blasted with water sprinklers night. The trees are being killed by your Department of Parks and Recreation. Weeds need to be embraced, not hated, as weeds are flowers and attract butterflies such as Monarch. Each tree a the park should have a flower bed with Milkweed plants for the Monarch, instead of chemicals to make bare ground, and then with rain, erosion occurs. You have two good women at the top of the Parks and Recreation Department and you need to guide them to do the right thing. Is that possible? Do you recommend that a woman be our next County Supervisor, so that we keep our Board of Supervisors at 5 women? I do not think there is any other one of our thousands of counties in the USA that has all 5 supervisors as women, and we ought to keep that record in Los Angeles County?

01:55:27
Thank you, Sheila Kuehl, for your leadership. Nice to have one of our amazing five women Supervisors here!

01:55:29
HOPE! Thank you for doing all you are doing to juggle what is an impossible process.

01:55:34
I think we need to reform fire fighting so that every home gets a fire retardent tent so that zero homes burn. The Union of firefighter is opposed as it removes the need for employment of many firefighters.

01:58:49
Yay BEn!!!

02:00:50
Great - Vote by Mail for special elections. YES!

02:01:17
Can’t hug your state senator either in virtual space. Or pinch little Ezra’s chubby cheeks.

02:01:27
Yes, I agree Marcia!

02:01:34
Glad to hear about the vote by mail option.

02:01:56
Good step, but renters need so much more.

02:01:58
It is critical to base wildfire protection on science. It is NOT helpful to remove habitat ie "clear". It only allows growth of invasive plants which are, in fact, fire accelerants. See From the House Outward by Rick Halsey, Chaparral Institute, for ways to protect your house and landscape immediately surrounding your house. Insurance Commissioner Lara is looking at both individual and community rating based on house hardening as described in the above document. We will need subsidies for some to make the recommended changes. Look for SB 55 and 63 (hopefully including subsidies) for other wildfire protection measures.

02:02:23
The link to our online store: https://bit.ly/PalisadesDems

02:02:39
Ben — a good start on eviction relief, and looking forward to your leadership going further.

02:04:14
Excellent points, Georgia. My former colleague on the national Sierra Club Board of Directors (he is running for election again this year, for those members!) - Chad Hanson - talks about genuine fire ecology. I wish Gavin Newsom and his staff would listen to him and to Rick Halsey. https://www.scientificamerican.com/video/apocalypse-no-wildfire-damage-and-impacts-can-be-overstated/

02:05:24
If you would like more info on the Halsey document and scientifically based measures, noted above, please ask Steve for my email. In so cal, the cause of ignitions are mainly Edison's lines. They need to be undergrounded, but SCE is detering this thru absurd costs. georgia

02:06:08
Thank you for your attention to plastics!!!

02:07:20
Stay strong opposing Scott Wiener.

02:07:57
Thank you. The reason best practices are not implemented and supported is a simple Common Cause analysis: special interest $

02:08:17
All these proposals don’t guarantee AFFORDABLE Housing!

02:09:13
Yes, as i said SB 55!!!

02:09:22
NO more bond money for climate as long as Newsom’s representatives at Fish & Wildlife claim - falsely - that destroying/bulldozing millions of cubic yards of life-filled soils at the Ballona Wetlands and helping SoCalGas’ gas storage facility stay there - somehow helps climate impacts - in fact, it’s the opposite. That’s why Al Gore’s Climate Reality Project is opposed to that destructive project at the Ballona Wetlands. So does LA County Democratic Party and 7 local Democratic Clubs!

02:09:48
Hi Georgia, I know R. Halsey very well and his book and writing, and you see that there is no guarantee that house will not burn if a resident clears vegetation around home. Fire retardent foam tents are 100% effect, zero failure, but again this cure is not getting out to the public as this lessens the need for costly fire prevention efforts which has become a big business, and the firefighter unions are more interested in having more firefighters and fire engines and do not wish to solve the fire issue. There is a corrupt system set up. Some firefighter even start the fires to stay employed. There is real courage and boldness in elected officials to do the true and tried use of fire retardent tents.

02:10:38
None for WATER FUNDING - unless language that the $$$ can’t go for Ballona Wetlands destruction.

02:11:21
Killing native plants around peoples homes is not good, results in soil erosion with exposed soil during rain, plus more weeds, and give homeowners a false sense of security, when all that is really needed is fire retardant tents!

02:12:24
Can you provide a list of democrats that are against plastics legislation?

02:12:43
Thank you, Ben!!!

02:12:48
Thanks for leading the charge against single-use plastics!

02:13:00
Thank you, Senator Allen! Best to Melanie and Ezra! xoxo

02:13:34
Thrilled you are trying to ban single use plastics.

02:13:41
How many democrats are voting against plastic legislation, since we have a super majority of democrats in the state legislature? We need a list of those democrats to lobby them, or to find a more progressive democrat in those areas?

02:14:20
Senator Allen DOES have that list - maybe Sam - who is in this meeting - can share them with you.

02:14:54
Agreed - I want a list of those fighting FOR Single Use plastics and are on the wrong side of the climate crisis.

02:16:16
Shout out to Janet & Kayla for orchestrating this amazing Zoom meeting today. It takes a lot to make this all work.

02:16:49
I echo Tamara's text. Thank you Kayla and Janet!!

02:17:20
Jumping on the Melissa/Tamara bandwagon — thank you, Janet and Kayla!

02:17:33
Not thankless jobs - they are very IMPORTANT jobs! I remember when I first met you, Richard Bloom, in a home of one of your neighbors - when you were President of Friends of Sunset Park. We collaborated on an important lawsuit in efforts to protect the Ballona Wetlands. 1996.

02:17:43
Yes, native plants are much more resilient than invasives. The best practices comment above referred to wildfire measures. Special interest $ from the industries involved in the Dept of Forestry: timber, ag, pesticide and many of the "preventive" vs actual firefighting measures promoted by CalFire.

02:17:55
Thanks everyone! We have an incredible 144 people attending.

02:19:02
144 now, but peak number I spotted was 177 : )

02:19:14
At Dodger Stadium no less!!

02:19:42
Why weren’t they arrested ?

02:20:41
And of course AB 1788!!! on rodenticides.

02:21:33
More renter protections are needed.

02:22:19
In Los Angeles it’s already allowed for housing to be built in commercial zones.

02:24:01
In fact, there is quite a bit of commercial space that can be converted now - as the pandemic has changed many commercial business practices. I just wonder why the State has to weigh in on these issues.

02:28:00
Yes, Georgia, but why does vegetation clearance around home include removal of native plants, giving invasive plants the advantage, when a fire retardent tent would save the home and the native vegetation, and stop the invasive plants. Jus sayin…. Peace, ‘Roy’

02:31:46
Seems it would be easy to have a law that not just states no rodenticides, but has still penalties for private sellers (pimps) that sell and market the poisons, not blame the homeowners that use the rodenticide poisons. Thanks Georgia, as there must be a lot of democrats that want rodenticides to remain legal and allowable to be sold at stores.

02:32:17
I don't advocate removing native plants, instead preserve them - just add a little water to them and trim the bits of dead wood. The most important area is the first 5 feet around the house, next is 30 ft. it's described in from the house outward.

02:32:42
Thank you Councilmember Bonin for all you and your team do!

02:32:59
Thank you Richard for all you do, and best of luck on the campaign!

02:33:15
Can you take the hundreds of millions dollars of LADWP in investment stocks, cash assets, and properties. I think that the City Council needs to have courage and boldness with genius, to work with mayor to take money away from LADWP. Is this a good strategy to alleviate fiscal situation of the City of LA?

02:34:02
Rodenticides are killing predators that eat the rodents. Exclusion of rodents and trapping are the most effective and safe measures.

02:34:12
Thanks for sending 2021 dues and maybe a little extra for our upcoming expenses! palisadesdemclub.org Thanks for helping!]

02:35:33
https://www.palisadesdemclub.org/join

02:35:43
I also heard that LADWP does not want all homes and businesses to have solar because then there would be need for a LADWP in the future. This is an easy win-win, Mike to reign in and refer the corrupt LADWP that also rips us off as customers. LADWP is also ruing our wild natural desert lands. And LADWP is an environment justice problem with dirty electric generation plants. Please become a true environmentalist with care?

02:36:29
Yes Erika!

02:37:05
We miss Bill's eggs, Mike!

02:37:55
Councilman, Thank you for your consistently progressive leadership !!!

02:37:59
Great question!

02:38:07
Mike is a true leader in fighting for the rights of tenants and for affordable housing.

02:38:44
Thank you, Mike, for being the MAIN elected official working to close down the Playa del Rey gas storage field under and around the Ballona Wetlands.. You ARE taking on the challenges with fossil fuel companies. I’d love to see others join you. Janice Hahn has publicly called for this closure. More will join you soon, I’m sure!

02:39:51
(This club has passed a resolution in support of closing that gas field - as have 7 other Dem Clubs AND the LA County Dem Party)

02:40:11
We should get to a place and plan to no longer have a LADWP, at least the “P” removed. And then we need to stop taking water away from the Owens Valley, and sell our LADWP lands in the Owens Valley to the state and federal government to make more national parks and sanctuaries. LADWP is atrocious toward nature and Indigenous Paiute peoples in Lone Pine, Bishop, Lee Vining, Mono Lake, Owens Lake. LADWP is total corrupt and no reform is coming from LA City Council. We see the Mayor praising LADWP and there is so much wrong. Let us have LADWP pay homeowners to put up solar power, not make a homeowner pay to set up the solar power. And with all the money in LADWP bank accounts this could be done very easily. And then electric cars can charge their cars without guilt at their homes at night.

02:40:29
Councilmember Bonin is one of our most fearless, tireless advocates for progressive change. We're lucky to have him

02:40:36
Mike - Thank you for supporting our needs so artfully!!!

02:40:41
Agree, Adam.

02:40:56
Agree Adam!

02:41:28
Best practices for homeless are exemplified by https://www.pathwayshousingfirst.org Pretty sure Sam Tsemberis, CEO, will be happy to talk with you. In a randomized controlled trial, in Harlem, they demonstrated 85% housing retention rate in the chronically homeless, mentally disabled.

02:41:46
So sad to hear bout Dick! Peace, ‘Roy’

02:43:07
Dick is greatly missed. RIP Dick Wulliger

02:44:31

Hey Nick, a bit of history. LAUSD had a nature study science program until World War II for a high school graduation requirements. After World War II with pro-chemistry and pro-nuclear power and science to make for food by pesticides and fertilizers, nature study was cancelled. Big mistake. Can you acknowledge this mistake from School board 70 years ago, and reinstate nature study in schools again, with projects in classrooms with various nature studies from butterflies to birds, and from trees to flowers, and so forth?
