Hi Everyone - we usually try to mention that this call is for everyone from everywhere - but we do focus a bit on California specific topics. So for those of you from out of state we are so happy you are here and hopefully there is still lots of helpful info for you shared!
Sorry everyone for the screen change! Clicked the wrong keyboard! :D
Wow, this sounds great. Feel free to ask any questions to Silo.
Nick - how to people access this platform?
We’ll send lots of follow up details on this for folks who are interested. Thanks Nick and Ashton!
I am interested in learning more about silo

Group Question: What questions about safety and public health guidance do you still have? Also - do you have a plan for flushing water at your school district?
How about face shields versus cloth masks?
Hi everyone, be sure to pay attention to the need to deal with the stagnant water in school’s pipes - Leyla just mentioned this - a hazard both for Legionnaire’s disease and for lead (if there is any lead in your plumbing).
We are looking at staggered schedules, distance and on site to keep distance.
We need waivers for the fall please.
Good point Christina! Make sure M&O doesn’t forget to flush taps in the kitchen and cafeteria. Has anyone spoken to the M&O about about this yet?
we likely will not have cafeteria lunch meals all in the classroom, home deliveries and grab and go.
What types of meal service options are you planning for during SY 19-20 in your district?
is anyone running into an issue with reimbursement for CACFP At-Risk Suppers after the 'official end date' of your school districts vs. the extension of waivers to June 30?
we can't plan unless we have an idea about waivers especially for mealtimes, meal patterns and more.
All of them Jennifer! Classroom, grab and go, curbside, and possible various pick up sites
Ditto again Kat!
I send an email weekly to my state and federal legislators.
Hello, I received confirmation from CDE we can serve CACFP through June 30th.
Big challenge is that districts don’t have plans yet
Challenge Indeed, Sally!
Also plans are being discussed that are technically possible but not financially possible
good to know, Catherine. Thanks!
CACFP not alligning with the others is really frustrating!!!!
so true, Stephanie! and so confusing
FFVP pick up unfortunately only applies if that school is still open. I received confirmation if the school closes the funds are frozen :(
SPEND THE MONEY! LOL
I think CDE applied for a waiver on serving FFVP at different sites, if I am remembering correctly from their webinar last week.
Tell your CNC that those students are being served via another location.
Awesome, thank you Leyla!
How does P-EBT help our direct sert numbers?
I did and they said I was not allowed to spend the money...very sad and strange
Yes — it’s still pending Catherine. But fingers crossed.
And confusing and frustrating Catherine!!!
We are in the same boat. I will push too.
Jennifer, your cheat sheets have been so helpful. Thank you!!!
Would it be possible to see some examples of what districts are doing for this procedure? Please send sample policy!
We’ll make sure to share that with you, Kristen! Others are welcome to share templates or ideas with us as well.
Yes, so helpful! Thank you.
We are very interested in viewing your sample policy, thank you!
Yes, I am interested in seeing other districts plans for parent pick up please
We in Montana would love to see the parent policy too. Thanks in advance
OK :) Sounds like sample policy is popular so we will include on this round of follow up info.
Yes, I would love have see sample policies regarding parent policy pick up.
If anyone has additional sample policies they would like us to share as well, please send our way.
Welcome Katie! Feel free to type in any questions for Katie in the chat box.
Here is our procedure for maintaining program integrity using rosters or a meal pick up card. It was approved by CDE.
Serious shout out to NKH securing grants and sharing them out in record time during a time where it’s so needed.
Are the grants you are referring to only for California?
Now making sure principles/sites are using it is another challenge ;)
Thank you Parisa!! Always a wealth of information. So appreciate you.

Happy to help :)
Katie - is there an action alert we can share yet?
Thanks to NKH - just heard yesterday that Montana NKH gave out support/grants in 300,000 thus far
If you could tell your state and federal elected officials one thing right now, what would it be?
Extend P-EBT and make it open for newly eligible families
Awesome thank you! We will share action alerts with this group as they come in!
Area eligibility waivers as well as increased funding for items such as packaging and new delivery systems
State/Feds: Extend Waivers through the 20-21 school year AND provide school meal programs HERO funds for pandemic related costs OUTSIDE of CARE, FEMA etc.
I tell them weekly that we need to continue flexibilities to allow us to serve our students in new and creative ways as we do not know what is going to happen.
We could lose school meal programs entirely as thousands of programs go broke. Don’t think it cannot happen here.
^kat - spot on!
WE have spent $30K+ on bags and single use plastics alone.
If students are in school partial days, we won't be able to serve them on SSO or SFSP as it is currently written as they require a 10 or 15 day consecutive school closure to utilize.
^ Yep Steph we need a waiver for that
Being in a community that is 90% needy, I need to be able to provide 3 meals a day 7 days a week right now.
Sally we would adjust our meal programs after this mess. School nutrition programs will lose
I see two photos from my old district. Neat.
as districts are struggling with budgets moving forward....
^ Steph what are your plans regarding supper after the planned last day of school. Are you continuing past the last day of school? What about after June 30?
We are losing now.
2nd Harvest in the Bay Area has offered to fund my dinner program through the summer. They have funds for schools.
I want to continue, but If I can't be reimbursed I will have to stop. Our parents are depending on this food. The majority of our community lost thier jobs on March 16th
Katie or Jenn - are you able to share some best practices for implementing a breakfast or lunch in the classroom model, for schools that are low free/reduced? I am struggling to come up with ways to prevent overt identification.
Yes Stephanie...same here.
^ Emily that is a great point. It s going to be tough. We really need universal meals if food is in the classroom.
We’ll link some NKH resources and Katie’s contact info in our follow up note to everyone who registered.
What about the FEED the Children Act. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics has an action alert for members to contact their congressional delegation to support it. It provides support for school nutrition
Kari Johnson: Lunch at the Library
@stephanie Bruce you may want to consider partnering with a local library to serve meals as well. A number of CA libraries are serving grab and go meals, and/or partnering with schools to provide grab and go enrichment activities at the school sites.
FEED is in the Heroes Act. :-(
Is the FEED the Children Act now within the HEROES Act?
We are feeding at two libraries this summer.
If HEROES Act gets stalled/voted down, is their direction to pull out FEED and advocate for it separately?
@kari, our libraries are not great partners. I have tried for 8 years to work with them and it has not ever worked.
I've partnerned with libraries, YMCA, and Boys Girls clubs.
Did folks receive CDE PPE needs survey? Well be sending that out too — be sure to fill it out! The office of emergency services is collaborating with them on that.
Local restaurants are providing dinner for families 2 days a week, Boys and Girls Club offers supper 3 days a week at 2 of our school sites...they will continue through August 31st.
Can you share PPE survey? Would LOVE to send to our SD Districts
Thank you Katie! Sorry I forgot to add your contact details to the slides but we will include in the follow up. Here is Katie’s email for anyone who wants to get in touch! Contact Info: Katie Dooley-Hedrickkdooley@strength.org
They have LOTS of concerns about masks!
CDE PPE Survey is due tomorrow. Here is the link: https://surveys2.cde.ca.gov/s.asp?k=158941562198
I really need this 3 practices...Thank you
Not a supply order - just a survey
Link to the needs survey is here: https://www.cde.ca.gov/ls/nu/needsassessmentsuvey.asp
At our management meetings we are going to each take a turn leading a stress management activity....going to start with coloring for 10 minutes on Tuesday.
2nd Harvest has offered to purchase refrigeration/freezers for those groups too, as the school sites, they used previously, are closed.
https://www.tenpercent.com/care - Here's a link to a free subscription to a meditation app for teachers and foodservice personnel.
Second Harvest in your region is amazing Michael. So glad to hear the ways that they’re supporting you!
Whoop whoop! LOVE group meditations!
Paloma A Perez Bertrand
