Has the union asked for 'special leave' for permanent part time employees too? An example is that if I am under employed (i.e. not working my contracted hours) because of my employer not having the contracted hours available, my sick leave is quickly used up. In the circumstance of me contracting Covid19, will I too be entitled to 'Special leave'?
Australian Services Union
27:51
Hi Peter, thanks for your message. Yes, part of the ASU and ACTU's calls on government and employers is to ensure workers in all forms of employment, including permanent part time staff are offered 'special leave'.

Hi. I have a question from a colleague. Can she wear a mask at work (Aged Day care centre). Is it her choice ?
Australian Services Union
44:19
Hi Keren, thanks for your question. Yes, any worker can choose to wear a mask should they wish.
Peter Phillipa

Let's say I go to the doctor and the doctor decides I may have Covid19 and deems that I should be in isolation because of government direction. Is there any avenue for paid leave?
Australian Services Union
50:05
Hi Peter. If you are instructed to self-isolate by a doctor whilst awaiting test results for COVID-19, you are entitled to take full paid sick leave. Ensure that you ask the doctor for a medical certificate to provide to your employer for this. If you have no sick leave left, you are entitled to exhaust all other forms of leave entitlements.
Peter Phillipa
51:52
If I have no leave left; is there an avenue to claim for paid leave or is this where the 'special leave' will come in to play?
Australian Services Union
53:08
As workers in the disability sector we:Call on our governments to immediately provide better support to the disability sector in facing this once in a century pandemic. This includes urgent access to PPE and providing funds so that no worker loses pay as a result of the COVID pandemic, either through service cancellation, isolation or illness.Call on our employers to work with us to ensure services continue without risk to the health and safety of workers, people with disability or others in the communityCall on our colleagues to join us in our union, because together we are stronger and you are never alone in union
Australian Services Union
54:48
Hi Peter, you are able to claim annual leave, long-service leave, carers leave, or sick leave. If you have exhausted all of these, you should speak to your employer and ask if they are prepared to consider 'special leave'. If you have an enterprise agreement at your site, you should check this as you may have special leave provisions. If you are unsure, call the ASU intake line on (02) 9310 4000.
