Gabriel Vogel
40:16
People won't care how much you know unless they know how much you care.
Panorama's Community Workshops
40:38
“Asset based” “mutual trust” “consistency” — so important in relationships with families
Andrea Schneider
40:54
I love that comment, Gabriel! Amen!!
Jennifer Lewis
40:57

@Marisol absolutely - here is the framework link: https://www.dualcapacity.org/

44:54
well said. COVID forced school systems to have to re-define their goals, problem solving approaches, communication with families
Jennifer Lewis
45:13
Re: @Demetrius - Culturally responsive curriculum and instruction is a key component of this
Lori Farrington
45:32
After reviewing our Teacher Satisfaction Survey between my two schools (which share the same building and share MOST of the students transitioning from middle to high school) there is evidence of the gap in relational trust
Vilmarie Mangual Paris
45:47
trust is important!!!! I love that is Disney connection is one of the important things, because the school is so multicultural and that we look from different resources and tools to connect and help our Hispanic families and community!
Becky Barstein
46:05
nodding* I relate to that and had to learn to better understand perspectives of families who have experienced real harm at the hands of schools
Vilmarie Mangual Paris
46:46
so many people, educators just because what happened try and look ina hurry to connect with families but that must be first priority
Vilmarie Mangual Paris
47:10
First thing connect, build trust and that teach and educate
alice.ndiaye
48:20
It's a revelation to lots of teachers too
Heavenly Berkley
48:40
One thing that has helped my organization, is we asked parents/caregivers what they needed. We wanted them to know that you are just as important as your scholar.
Lisa Pineda
49:43
Well said, Rowena Mak!
Elana Fisher
49:45
I think if people were willing to shut down schools to keep their populations safe, we should be taking the time to be as concerned about all the different needs and concerns that family and students have and to be supportive of their needs.
Keisha Anderson
49:59
Youth spend more time in schools then anywhere else, so schools have to come on board and realize they have to stand in the gap to increase likelihood of improved academics. It all works together and everyone has to do their part
alice.ndiaye
50:20
It's a chance to reset
Jennifer Lewis
50:40

Vilmarie Mangual Paris
51:01
It's time to keep meeting and knowing the needs of our students and their families, know their culture background! to connect! and we will know how we can teach them, connect and help them learn the language and achieve academic success
Lori Farrington
51:27
@Gabriel, great quote!
Jennifer Lewis
51:29
Love it @David! If we are clear in our "Why" and our mission and vision as a school and as a district, we will be better able to clearly and consistently communicate about it
Nancy Hellen

Gabriel Vogel
52:52
A good way to judge someone's character is to observe them treat others who can do nothing for them.
Marie Rohleder
53:02

Our District Runs a "Resource Fair" each year. community resource organizations come out and set up a table for the night. We have give aways and fun activities to entice folks to come out and see what resources are available for them. Also we do a "Strengthening Families" Progam.
Becky Barstein
53:27

I want Rowena to come talk to my district.
Crystal Berry
58:13
So important to have the conversation about academics and social/emotional behaviors, then help with figuring out how to address the difficulty for the student and family.
Audrey Barrett
58:16
I love that approach Rowena!
Lori Farrington
58:49
@Rowena, time to visit NC!!

01:00:52
I tell my parents that they are an important part of the team, and express that to my middle school students also. When we ask questions, more information can be revealed where we know what possible direction to go in for assiting the student and family.
Marla Kanevsky
01:00:54
I think we always knew it...but seeing it...it's undeniable...
Esther Coleman
01:00:54
Educating them on OUR system? Or educating ourselves and then changing (deconstructing) the system, which was not built for some of them.
Jennifer Lewis
01:01:08
YES! Questions to consider: To what extent does my school promote culturally responsive curriculum, programming, and practices? To what extent do we infuse SEL in our work to identify and disrupt inequitable practices within our schools? Schools that do this effectively EMPOWER students and families
Karen Baker-O'Brien
01:01:10
yes, Esther! greqt question
Becky Barstein
01:01:26
What a paradigm shift - partnering vs leveraging parents and families
Maura Balmaceda
01:02:21
I hope we change our ways. We definitely need parents to be engaged in our partnership so their student has a higher opportunity to succeed.
alice.ndiaye
01:02:27
I am a PATHS coach and trainer in England; it works really well
alice.ndiaye
01:02:52
But family engagement is an area we need to work on
Maura Balmaceda
01:03:00
@Alice what is PATHS?
Brenda Windhausen
01:03:03
Parents have the most background knowledge whether they realize it or not about their child. It is our job to help them see that
Karen Baker-O'Brien
01:03:08
we have to stop seeing ourselves as experts. family engagement requires humbleness from educators.
jessica Lewis
01:03:34
Yes! Karen!!
Vilmarie Mangual Paris
01:03:37
i call us family like PRE-K Family this year im going to Kindergarten but i also make my parents part of us too ! we are a team

Maura Balmaceda
01:04:32
@Alice
Jennifer Lewis
01:04:34
@Demetrius: We can accomplish this by exemplifying the NYS Culturally Responsive-Sustaining Education Framework. Shout out to NY for this fabulous framework that I use in my work as one of 30 NYCDOE Teacher Leadership Program Facilitators who trains teacher leaders and school leaders in facilitative and instructional leadership and in promoting equity and excellence for all children. - @FLHSMsLewis here

alice.ndiaye
01:06:28
Tech could really support this; as a working parent, it's hard to do drop in mornings
Julia Renfro
01:06:40
Partnering starts by connecting, then moves to you doing something for them before asking them to do something for you. Yes, they are assets. But you cannot ask them for things before showing them what you have to give.
Vilmarie Mangual Paris
01:07:03
is important also being concerned in how parents feelings and emotions! an that they are engaged!
Jennifer Lewis
01:07:18
"technology as a communication channel" Love it @David! an awesome challenge and yet an awesome opportunity right now
Marla Kanevsky
01:07:19
After all this distance learning...I think parents/guardians will be on board with getting more involved themselves...
Keisha Anderson
01:07:25
YES!! You have to involve the youth!
alice.ndiaye
01:07:32
Families love social and emotional learning; we find removes barriers and then they engage in maths or English more
Brenda Windhausen
01:08:08
21 century learning is here! We need to help families build these skills to help their children
Esther Coleman
01:08:31
COVID has exacerbated problems in education and other systems that have existed for a long time. People are stepping back and asking, "What's up? Why is our system not working for everyone?" I hate that it had to come to that to make us step back, but it has.
rhonda heatherly
01:08:46

I agree. The issues with education should not be a surprised with COVID - 19 with low income school/students.
Jennifer Lewis
01:12:49
LOL Becky! Yes. Implementing schoolwide protocols like the School Reform Initative (SRI) protocols can promote cycles of continual improvement and allow us to continue to analyze the extent to which our schools promote equity and excellence in a structural and systemic sense. This is what I do as an Endorsed HS Department Assistant in Queens, SRI Facilitator and TLP Facilitator in New York. Protocols are such important tools that help schools continue to improve!! I tweet about this @FLHSMsLewis
Brenda Windhausen
01:12:50
