Course Design 2: A Nuts and Bolts Approach to Go Remote - Shared screen with speaker view
Darren Robinson
18:27
Good morning, everyone. @Lena, it is warming up quite a bit today.
Rich Couto
19:17
Hello Everyone, sorry for the delays with the Meeting rooms. If you can make sure to use a Full name or Central login it will help us coordinate ( just First names complicates things)
Rich Couto
19:34
*waitng room, not meeting rooms :P
Rich Couto
24:43
FYI, the screen recordings and resources will be available on the same page you used to register for the event: https://opened.uoguelph.ca/instructor-resources/remote-teaching-webinar-series
Lena Paulo Kushnir
33:24
wow! that's higher proportion than I'd expect!
Lena Paulo Kushnir
33:57
challenges = costs in this reality!
Darren Robinson
34:22
I had that exact issue myself. A lot of emails from students - chewed up time!
Monica
35:12
would it be possible for Andy to show us how he used the app (doceri?) and integrated his ipad and computer.? This sounds super interesting!
Lena Paulo Kushnir
35:27
Respondus deals with bandwidth very well much like Zoom
Irene Moore
37:48
how large was the question bank vs. number of questions in the exam?
Rich Couto
38:47
@Monica for sharing your IPAD via a zoom meeting https://support.zoom.us/hc/en-us/articles/115003341686-Share-an-iOS-Device-Screen-Using-a-Cable
Irene Moore
39:46
Thanks, Andy!
Rich Couto
39:49
And although well Andy expand on his use of it, the Doceri App : https://doceri.com/
Mohamad Abou El Nasr
40:20
did you allow or restrict going back to questions once submitted?
Candace
42:44
Hi this is Candace Johnson. Sorry I don't know how to make my full name appear on the screen. This is a more general question. I am wondering if the University is planning to integrate Zoom into Courselink before the fall semester begins? Or do anything else to integrate the platforms to make any of this easier for those of us who are new to all of this?
Rich Couto
43:37
@Candance, you can integrate Zoom into CourseLink currently. We can walk you through that.
Carolyn Creighton
43:43
Hi Candace, Zoom is able to be integrated into the Content section of your course. It allows you and your students to access any meetings and recordings though this integration.
Carolyn Creighton
45:17
To rename yourself, open the Participants panel. If you hover over your name, you will see a 'more' menu. Within that menu is an option to rename yourself.
CE Zoom 2
46:16
Does anyone know how to send an attachment through Chat (e.g., working in breakout rooms, sending a file via chat to other group members)?
Cheryl Trueman
46:27
Any suggestions/strategies for handling increased email? Maybe posting question and answer (anonymously) in Courselink discussion for student to refer to first? Or is the email communication just a necessity for instructor-student connection and we just learn to adjust?
Carolyn Creighton
46:56
@CE Zoom, file transfer may be turned off in the background settings of some meetings.
Rich Couto
48:54
@Cheryl A Question and Answer (Q & A) Forum: Consider creating a Q & A forum within Discussions for students to ask the instructional team questions. This can cut down on emails and allow you to respond to common questions once, and in a place that all students can access.
Carolyn Creighton
49:32
@Cheryl, creating a Discussion board where students can post questions can help. Many times, multiple students will have the same question and this can reduce repetition. I would also suggest providing students with clear expectations of how often/when you will be responding to emails. (i.e. respond in 48 hours, will you respond on weekends? etc.)

looks like Kahoot! will integrate with Teams in a coming update
Rich Couto
51:10
@John, Looks like its for the Premium version https://kahoot.com/press/2020/05/20/kahoot-integration-microsoft-teams-engagement-distance-learning-video-conferencing/
Carolyn Creighton
51:11
@John, that is exciting!
Candace
51:45
Thanks everyone. I have no idea how to do any of this.
Rich Couto
52:33

Did I miss something? Am I the only person who does not know what Kahoot is?
deidre
56:06
Kahoot is a free online quiz game platform. Students love it.
deidre
56:20
It is very easy to use.

Darren Robinson
56:36
You're not alone, @ispears. I've heard the name, and that's it. I know nothing about how it works.
Carolyn Creighton
56:57
Kahoot! has a very catchy theme song
Lena Paulo Kushnir
58:14
me too! heard of it but that's it. I'm a big fan of iclickers but our Instructional Technology Specialists (Carolyn and Rich) can help match pedagogy to tools. We also have a resource specifically for matching tools to your pedagogy

Thanks for all of the information on "Kahoot"
Jacqueline Murray
01:00:32
course email accounts are great. You can also give GTAs access so they can answer as well
shickson
01:01:18
How do you get an email account for your course?
Andrea Paras
01:01:25
Re: course email accounts. Is it possible to set up a @uoguelph.ca email account for this purpose?
Rich Couto
01:02:02
You can request an Organization Account Through CCS
Jacqueline Murray
01:02:16
you cave to get your dept admin to contact CCS but yes, you can get a uoguelph account
Rich Couto
01:03:00
CCS Organizational Account - https://www.uoguelph.ca/ccs/my-accounts/central-login-account/organizational-account
Rich Couto
01:03:13
Organizational accounts for groups must be requested by the Department Chair, Dean, Director, or Manager.
deidre
01:03:30
Will we be looking at PEAR today? I have been using the tools on the left of the screen for years.
Rich Couto
01:04:42
@deidre, Im not sure how much detail we'll be able to get into today with PEAR, but if there is interest, we can always do a one on one, or a PEAR specific webinar.
Lena Paulo Kushnir
01:04:48
No pear will be covered in the next two webinars
Jacqueline Murray
01:05:12
But can the screen be bigger please
Cheryl Trueman
01:05:45
Or hide Carolyn's video? I can't read the text.
deidre
01:05:47
Ok, thank you. I will see you next week. These tools are all very familiar to me. Take care everybody.
Lena Paulo Kushnir
01:06:14
we will have slides available after webinar
Lena Paulo Kushnir
01:06:23
@deidre thank you!
Rich Couto
01:08:52
@John what do you see?
shickson
01:08:53
Thank you!
Mohamad Abou El Nasr
01:11:16
Thank you got to leave
Jacqueline Murray
01:11:29
No it is even smaller
Lena Paulo Kushnir
01:12:41
re classlist: good to know!
Lena Paulo Kushnir
01:13:41
@Jacqueline are you able to zoom in from your computer? it looks fine on my screen
Jacqueline Murray
01:14:41
No. This does not meet accessibility standards.
John Dawson
01:14:54
can zoom be added to a nav bar drop down menu?
Andy Robinson
01:15:02
Suggestion - if you post material, include the official U of G logo and a copyright message. That way if it finds its way into a paid content download site, you can pursue copyright with the site’s content removal request system.
Lena Paulo Kushnir
01:15:13
Good point! I'll look into it
CE Zoom 2
01:21:50
If you are integrating Zoom into CourseLink, could you put it under the Virtual tab?
Rich Couto
01:22:09
@John Dawson, it appears that zoom cannot be added to a nav bar drop down menu in CourseLink. I will investigate further and let you know if I find otherwise.
monica
01:27:50
What are “online rooms” in the External learning tools?
Andy Robinson
01:28:48
CourseLink Surveys are a great way to get asynchronous anonymous feedback on stuff you are curious about.
Lena Paulo Kushnir
01:29:12
@Andy great tip!
Denise Mohan
01:29:34
How does one edit the navbar to include the Tools and Virtual drop down menus? I don't see these as options in the "add links"list.
Rich Couto
01:31:50
@Denise Mohan this might help https://support.opened.uoguelph.ca/instructors/courselink/tools/content/navigation-bar?rq=navwe can also walk you through that if you need further assitance
Candace Johnson
01:32:10
Good question Denise. I want to know that too.
Candace Johnson
01:32:46
Does that mean it is not a simple thing?
Denise Mohan
01:34:06
Hi all. I know how to edit a navbar. I just don't see "Tools"and "Virtual" as link options.
Denise Mohan
01:34:43
Aha... Thanks, @Carolyn.
John Dawson
01:34:51
@Denise- yup it’s not that simple 👍
Andy Robinson
01:35:09
I do a custom Nav Bar (and homepage layout with widgets) in all of my CourseLink courses. It is great to take out the standard options that aren’t needed for a course and add tabs that are not standard fare.
CE Zoom 2
01:35:28
If you add a Virtual tab, can you add Zoom to it, rather than integrating Zoom into Content?
Darren Robinson
01:37:02
Awesome! Thank you @Rich!!!
Denise Mohan
01:37:04
@Rich. Very cool! Thanks!
John Dawson
01:37:17
👍👍👍
CE Zoom 2
01:37:38
Rich, then how do you move other tabs into Tools?
Rich Couto
01:38:04
Carolyn did an example. If you double click the "Group" you can change the links from the pop up menu
Rich Couto
01:38:30
the Group being "Tools" or "Virtual"
Carolyn Creighton
01:39:10
@Andy, great point! Removing what students don't need can make it much easier for them to navigate your course.
Carolyn Creighton
01:40:08
@CE Zoom, no, you won't be able to add Zoom to the nav bar. It is only available to integrate through Content at the moment
Andy Robinson
01:45:24
👍 The importance of expectations increases exponentially with course size. You can save yourself a lot of headaches - and emails - by being consistent and clear with expectations.
