"My Leadership Journey" - 2020 Edition w/Patty Wong - Gallery view
hello all, Marian, 1st yr LIS student here
:) you’re welcome, Robert!
That title is in storage at OPL, people can ask for it if they want to see it.
Go Cal! That's how I know of you too. MLIS from Cal, 1993.
My sister and her friends are all biologists at Loma Linda University and they have lots of snakes! They have brought them into the library for several performances. The kids love it!
I think I recall you at the Tool Lending Library in Berkeley.
@Patty, everything you're saying is extremely relatable... until you brought up the snakes!
LOL @ Natasha's comment.
I'm proud of you Patty for standing up in that situation
20 snakes :O
Do you remember Dr. Michael Buckland at Cal, SLIS? He taught library management.
Thank you fro sharing that, Patty.
Dr. Buckland is from England.
@ Camille...I'd love to get your sisters info...I'm in Redlands...right next door to LL!
@Pamela They actually just created their own website: https://www.researchontheroad.com/ They have their contact info on there as well!
Thank you Camille!
Talk the talk and walk the walk!
Delegation and it's okay to ask for help.
that is great advice!
Yes, seeking and asking questions without hesitation!
when your ideas don’t get traction, don’t stop talking about your ideas
Don’t burn bridges.
You won't always have all the answers...and that is ok.
Never disqualify yourself, let the others do it.
Leadership is a practice: you need to continue it’s development
That anyone can be a leader and that a huge part of leadership is listening and responding well to others' ideas.
Don't be afraid to fail forward.
Surround yourself with creative good people - you don't have to know everything
When you’re really stick on a complex issue, talk with Patty about it
Step out of the way..and let others shine
Once you walk out the door at night, leave work there.
Teamwork really is dream work.
It’s ok for people you supervise to have feelings, we’re not robots, making space for their healthy expression feelings at work will help build a healthy work environment for yourself and your team
Listen and communicate clearly.
I have a hard time doing it too honestly, but I get told it allll the time. I get in trouble for answering emails outside of work time.
I suck at leaving work at work. Even before this.
“Real leaders are people who can make things better” (Goldsmith, 2008)
Hahah same here Patty. MANY HATS.
A lot of inspiration or new ideas come when you are driving home, at home and/or places other than work.
^ because those are the moments you are finally in a quiet place!
Or right before bed.
I like that..."make the day work better for everybody"
It’s like we’re all in the fire together. We’ll come out better librarians.
QUESTION: I've been told by supervisors that to move forward in the library, I need to show leadership by taking initiative. But when I take initiative, I've also been told by my supervisors that that's not my role. I want to demonstrate I can do more because I've done more. And when I ask to help I'm told I can't do that because I'm a lab clerk and that's not my role. I wasn't allowed to do curbside service because that's a Tech/Librarian role. How do I grow in my "role" if my growth attempts are stunted?
How much is the cost for the conference. Is there anything on the website?
Never mind…found the info.
Thank you. I have to leave now because I have a Zoom meeting at 2 pm. Have a great weekend everyone!
Hahaha That's Awesome!

You killed my father. Prepare to die

Yes, thank you, Robert!
