Ashley Klaiss
01:09:21
Hi Wendy!
renatakeller
01:09:24
Hello Fellow Amazing Educators from LA, California.
Wendy Binder, NSTA
01:09:32
Hi Ashley- glad you are here live too
Wendy Binder, NSTA
01:10:42
a shout out to all the Northrop Grumman Foundation Teacher Academy Fellows on tonight!
Wendy Binder, NSTA
01:15:40
ok this is making me tear up Trish!
Kala Grice-Dobbins
01:15:48
So sorry I was late
Ann-Margaret Somers
01:15:51
Yep! Getting chills!!
Trish Shelton
01:15:53
Agreed- it gets me every time
Kala Grice-Dobbins
01:16:29
We are not allowed to require synchronous
Michelle Phillips
01:16:29
I love this video!! Cried even the second time of watching!
Kala Grice-Dobbins
01:16:33
Makes it SO hard
Wendy Binder, NSTA
01:17:00
it does capture it---
Heather Willhide
01:17:27
I'm confused...
Michelle Phillips
01:17:51
Can you tell us a bit more Heather?
Wendy Binder, NSTA
01:18:24
yes Heather-- say more
Heather Willhide
01:18:24
To have emotions about something in the past, for me, that thing needs to actually be in the past
Wendy Binder, NSTA
01:19:01
its still a very real emotion for many and some are still not in person yet-- but I understand where you are too
Heather Willhide
01:20:00
That's part of my confusion, why is ANYONE teaching in person, and why will I be soon?
Wendy Binder, NSTA
01:20:24
good quesiotn heather--
Wendy Binder, NSTA
01:20:30
question
Kala Grice-Dobbins
01:20:42
Distance learning is SO hard for our teachers and students. I am responsible for ALL 8th grade virtual students’ math lessons as well as elective lessons and there are over 100 of them.
Tony Carter
01:20:46
Heather, because Hogan says we should.
Heather Willhide
01:20:46
Like 30 million ppl worldwide have died in the last three days
Cheryl Matas
01:20:51
My district goes from face-to-face to virtual to hybrid depending on how many COVID cases are logged. A lot of districts are requiring we teach face-to-face. It’ll be virtual after spring break.
Kala Grice-Dobbins
01:20:55
I MIGHT have 25 who participate in ANYTHING
Amy Minzola
01:21:07
try a blind student virtually...it was new to me
Wendy Binder, NSTA
01:21:11
wow I appreciate you al sharing your realities
Kala Grice-Dobbins
01:21:55
We have about 2/3 in person since September
Kala Grice-Dobbins
01:22:21
And it constantly changes who is virtual (due to exposure ) for two weeks where they do NOTHING
Kala Grice-Dobbins
01:22:30
And we can’t hold them accountable
Wendy Binder, NSTA
01:22:31
That's so hard Kala--- i am here to support you
Kala Grice-Dobbins
01:22:43
I appreciate it so much Wendy!!!
Cheryl Matas
01:22:46
Yet we still have to test. Crazy!
Ashley Klaiss
01:22:51
At my school we only have 18% of students who are hybrid....but so many more want to come back but are unable to at this point
Kala Grice-Dobbins
01:22:56
We just did state testing last week
Heather Willhide
01:23:01
@Cheryl, our district said they were doing things based on COVID cases, but then they flipped and now we are all going back even though we have yet to meet the reopening metrics...teachers have been back for a whole week and we already got the letter saying someone has tested positive...
Kala Grice-Dobbins
01:23:03
Virtual kids state test April 22-23
Ann-Margaret Somers
01:24:22
I totally agree with the quote. I truly don't understand requiring state testing this year.
Cheryl Matas
01:24:25
@Heather Holy moly! We don’t have proper ventilation or room for kids to be even 3 feet apart. It’s nuts!
Amy Minzola
01:24:29
our state testing is in may...I have seniors who haven't had the 1st half of bio. since 9th
Wendy Binder, NSTA
01:25:19
its heartbreaking to read all of your situations i hope this focus on lessons NSTA has for you- can help and inform your TSEM lesson designs
Wendy Binder, NSTA
01:25:33
STEM- sorry Dyslexic
Amy Minzola
01:25:58
no windows and not allowed legally to have class room doors open (safety reasons they say 🤦‍♀️)
Cheryl Matas
01:26:14
I just hope the powers that be don’t use test scores to reduce funding, takeover schools or fire teachers. Our evaluation is based 25% on test scores.
Ashley Klaiss
01:27:03
CDC changed the guidelines so we only have to have desks 3 feet apart, yet when lunch happens, we all need to be 6 feet apart....how is that supposed to work??
Kala Grice-Dobbins
01:27:21
Our schools puts teachers six feet or more from any students but students are crammed together so the teachers never have to be quarantined
Ashley Klaiss
01:27:50
that's interesting Kala
Michelle Phillips
01:28:33
If you have jut joined us - You are listening to the presenter Tricia Shelton - Chief Learning Officer, NSTA
Amy Minzola
01:28:36
we are staying 6feet uppers have decided our over flow students go to other rooms ...sssooooo same as virtual for them
Kala Grice-Dobbins
01:28:48
I love the daily dos in my sTEM classes
Wendy Binder, NSTA
01:29:12
so glad you have tired them Kala- we will be writing one!
Wendy Binder, NSTA
01:29:17
tried
Ashley Klaiss
01:29:39
my district for middle is having the students switch classes like normal
Ashley Klaiss
01:29:56
but in the classes, its essentially the virtual lesson
Kala Grice-Dobbins
01:30:03
I am excited to get back into STEM and teach some more
Heather Willhide
01:30:10
So storylines are different from 5Es?
Wendy Binder, NSTA
01:30:46
@heather- yes-- good question for Trish to address for us-
Michelle Phillips
01:31:33
@Heather - Great question! I have collected for discussion
Michael Westberry

Sometimes when I draw things it comes out fairly penis looking lol
Ann-Margaret Somers
02:00:54
@heather - LOL!!
Melanie Andrews
02:01:03
When sharing the daily do lessons with the students does it show what level the lessons are designed for? If not it might be powerful to let older students experience some of the elementary ones. However, if they know that is for elementary they might not engage because they think it is too simple for them.
Toni Milleret
02:01:41
adding salt would have been awesome to visualize
Heather Willhide
02:01:56
I LOVE this question! NearPod messed me up showing the kids the grade levels...they tried to be like "oh we weren't sure we were supposed to do that because it says 5th grade"
Kala Grice-Dobbins
02:02:26
I would do this on small canvas and give as mothers day gifts
renatakeller
02:03:41
Love it
renatakeller
02:04:38
Great idea
Michelle Phillips
02:07:48

Marga Marioni
02:10:34
Do I use the Daily Dos instead of my given curriculum?
Pam Larson
02:10:44
I know that there are more Daily Do's coming, so what are the plans for adding more Playlists?
M-Lori Waddle
02:12:12
Can anyone submit a daily do lesson or is there a team of teachers that is developing them?
Wendy Binder, NSTA
02:12:14
Roger Bybees new NSTA press book addresses this
Cheryl Matas
02:13:04
Sorry! Gotta go. Great presentation!
dua chaker
02:13:27
How often are Daily Do's being published?
Wendy Binder, NSTA
02:13:42
@Lori- we will be designing them and if it is reviewed and accepted then yes- I will share more about that on our next meeting webinar
Heather Willhide
02:13:47
So its like poor Charlotte Danielson and the FFT being used as an evaluative tool?
terrycontant
02:14:02
The 5E instructional model can be applied at different timescales. Within a lesson, or organizing a unit. And lessons don’t have to just be one class period long
M-Lori Waddle
02:14:06
cool
Kala Grice-Dobbins
02:15:17
Love this. Thank you to all who put this presentation together. Got to get little one in bed
Kala Grice-Dobbins
02:15:19

Wendy Binder, NSTA
02:15:58
thanks for coming Kala
terrycontant
02:16:21
Are the Daily Do’s searchable by DCI, Practice, and/or CCC?
Ann-Margaret Somers
02:17:04
In terms of sense making, can that initial phenomena be guided hands on activities or purely inquiry based. I am currently in the depths of ADI and I cannot imagine doing pure inquiry for each new topic.
Michael Westberry
02:17:07
Nice!
terrycontant
02:17:33
Could both formats be available?
terrycontant
02:19:21
The “making it your own” action is really a great form of Professional Learning, especially if done collaboratively.
bobbystewart
02:19:28
You find yourself modifying and adjustiing with all lesson plans.
M-Lori Waddle
02:20:26
I agree there is so much information in the Daily dos to help guide your lesson
Wendy Binder, NSTA
02:21:19
that's our goal Lori!
Virginia Hohl
02:21:25
NSTA had a webpage that listed vetted activities for the standards. I cannot find it anymore. Is it gone? Moved?
Leslie Smith
02:21:27
Super excited to check out the Daily Dos! Thank you!
Ann-Margaret Somers
02:21:52
That sounds like a great course!!
Amy Minzola
02:22:25
any links for writing the daily do lessons class
Wendy Binder, NSTA
02:22:42
not yet Amy- but stay tuned
terrycontant
02:22:54
Have you started thinking about how to help teachers transition from Daily Do’s to Storylines?
Trish Shelton
02:23:52
Additional Qs- Teachers with a free NSTA account get access to 3 resources. The playlists are free to all- but the individual DDs each counts s a resource
terrycontant
02:25:04
Has your research about family Daily Do’s (as I spelling that correctly?) shown parent growth related to what NGSS science looks like.?
Trish Shelton
02:25:05
More Daily Dos and Daily Do playlists are coming— there will be A LOT published in the Summer (we have more writers available then) We have 6 coming out in the next 2 weeks
Virginia Hohl
02:25:45
Can you drop the link to the collection?
Michelle Phillips
02:26:06
@ Virginia we drop the survey link after the recording
Ann-Margaret Somers
02:26:08
@virginia - I was thinking the same thing!
Virginia Hohl
02:26:25

Thank you for the Q about the vetted materials— we were getting concerns that some of the critiques were outdated, lots of broken links, etc.. So they are not on the site for now as we work through that. We are replacing them with linked Daily Dos on the next few months
