How do you facilitate drop ins virtually?

Teams is used at Buxton and Leek College, agree engage parents in the process

Newcastle College use Teams

Teams and Zoom are both good. We have also used WhatsApp & Messenger for smaller group chats

I have some concerns too about induction and transition, I would be really grateful for any ideas or good practice

Our local authorities are happy for some reviews to be delayed

We are working to produce virtual tours for transition learners, along with summer activity packs being sent but would be keen to hear from others on new plans

Evolve College using Teams providing a full timetable of lessons Monday to Thursday, supported by Support staff. Fridays we provide drop in / chat sessions and boredom busting activities. All online lessons are well attended

How are you funding all the additional hours of support and AT?

Re engaging MORE in this climate - I completely agree - I have two students who have really engaged in this way of learning and have excelled recently

Bridgend College are hosting an online virtual open evening tomorrow and I am hosting the ALn chatroom, has anyone yet hosted a similar event and can share good practice on how this went?

Buxton and Leek are starting virtual open events from the 11th May, we will be working through Blackboard

Hi Bridgend we are hosting a virtual open event on 14th may so would be good to know how your event goes

City College Plymouth hosted a Virtual Open Day on Saturday, which went really well, after a few slight technical hitches.

Happy to share, we will present re the content of the programmes and answer any questions. Do like the idea of a virtual tour.

Bridgend College are teaching and supporting remotely via Google classroom, hangout meet and other platforms and have sent out work packs to our ILS Learners. We are maintaining weekly support with approximately 100 learners in addition to the 400 being supported weekly by our wellbeing teams. We aren't carrying out any face to face activity as we don't currently have EHCP's ( Welsh equivalent IDP's) yet. Thanks for the comments re the open evening. Really looking forward to trying this!

Is there any advice on PPE for tutors working with the EHCP learners that struggle with understanding social distancing?

Buxton and Leek College. One parent I interviewed last week, asked if her son could have his transition in the summer or September for the first few weeks?

Also concerns about learners at the top end of EHCPs i.e 25 year old and how now to support their transition and if there is anyway to extend the EHCP or funding for their education

a good app we use at Harlow college is called Showbie

Yes we have a list of about 60 who have requested laptops

We have learners with no access to technology and have provided laptops and getting dongles sourced, as well as posting them workpacks.

We have found issues with families trying to share laptops for work, school, college etc. Adds to the family pressure as well.

Julie, we do a tLewisham College. We're sending out packs of paper resources with instructions for the parents/carers

If you supply laptops and dongles, how does the ICT team monitor the appropriate usage of ICT?

Is there any guidance or information on how to provide grades for students assuming that these progammes (Pathways to Work and Independent Living for us) are required to be assessed in the same way as GCSEs? Everyone had completed different amounts prior to lock down for example

We have a few issues with shared / no technology / wifi limitations. Sending out paper-based activities or practical activities to these students. Parents Whatsapping photos of what people have done. Also have set up a community page on Facebook for students to share what they are doing with each other.

Re ICT, they go through a VPN usually which ensure our ICT team can monitor

My LSW phones the parents regularly to check the students are Ok.

Has contacting learners via phones been an issue for other colleges? Do you use other platforms?

We are using Cisco Jabber

We have been using phones, email and our online journals via SeeSaw

Relating learning to home life works really well as the parents can buy-in to it really easily. We phone through Skype so there's ni issue with personal phone numbers

My Learning support practitioners are not able to use personal phones and do not have access to work mobiles, has anyone had success with Teams to offer support?

We managed to get college mobiles just before lockdown for all Course Leads in Skills Development, and they communicate closely with the Learning Support Assistants and Tutors

Yes, only 2 staff from a team of 78 had access to work mobile phones. If email and other digital contact isn't working we are referring to the two workers covering mobile calls or our wellbeing colleagues as needed.

We are allowing staff to use mobiles using 141 but prefer them to use Teams as it is covers them more

We've also found texting the student or scheduling a weekly time before you call so they pick up - teenagers don't pick up unknown numbers!

Yes we have issues with contact via mobile, we have one Learning support practitioner who can follow up with lack of contact.

We've given out approx. 150 laptops to students last week

We have handed out all of our laptops before lockdown and have donated all PPE from labs, workshops and salons to the frontline. Really hope there is support to reinvest.

I agree with that Lynn. It was too much at the beginning for Parents as all Tutors were sending work

Yes, we only have the personal tutor and FS tutor sending work once a week.

We're also limiting the amount of work with key tutors maintaining control with our SEND learners.

Good

We do that during Enrichment Lynn. Students really enjoy their dance session.

It really shows the vast difference in SEND provision across the sector

I think v. learning walks would have to be explained very clearly to teachers - that they are supportive and developmental - otherwise they could add another layer of anxiety. But if handled well, they could be good.
