there was a wonderful folksinging couple in the 70s and later: Joe & Penny Aaronson(sp?) who performed nationwide...one song was an eternal favorite of mine: All I Got Was WordsWhen I was young and fancy free,My folks had no fine clothes for me.All I got was words:Gott Zu Danken – Thank GodGott wet Geben – God will provideZoll men nor leben un sein Gezunt. We should only live and be healthy. When I was wont to travel far,They didn’t provide me with a car.All I got was words:Geh Gezunt – Go in healthGeh Pamelach – Go carefullyHab a glikliche reize – Have a safe trip.I wanted to increase my knowledge,But they couldn’t send me to college. All I got was words:Hab Seichel – Have common senseZei nicht ken nahr – Don’t be a foolToire is die beste achoire.Learning is its own best reward. The years have flown, the world has turned,Things I’ve forgotten, things I’ve learned,Yet I rememberZag dem emes – Tell the truthGih Tzedakah – Be charitableHab rachmonus – Have compassion

Before my mother passed away, she had very specific instructions on her funeral - choosing her pall bearers (all women), who was to speak (not the rabbi, who was too long winded), what songs to sing, what shive would look like (she even said to her daughters - me and my sister - I know you will do a good job but I wish I could be there). We even met with the rabbi together with my mother and my siblings about what mourning would look like. It was incredibly reassuring to know her wishes.

01:19:40
In NJ, one can appoint a Funeral Agent to legally authorize that person to carry out your final/burial wishes.

Here are the beautiful letters written by Rabbi Dick Israel to his daughter at four different life transitions. They served as a model for my ethical will writing to my children: https://www.dropbox.com/s/xhapbtgji2mcm0o/Dick%20Israel-letters%20to%20daughter%20opt.pdf?dl=0

Our “goodbye” wishes — guidance for our funerals and burials — should reflect our values and contributes to our legacy.

01:34:08
I have discussed burial wishes with both of my living parents. My father wants a burial that violates Jewish practice that is important to me but not to him.

01:36:35
@Alex - I had the same issue with my mother...in the end I honored her wishes because it was exactly that her wishes. I remember my additional sadness at the time.

01:39:22
I always assumed as a single woman, that my kids would bury me in my family plot in NY, tho I live in CA.. I told me family that I was purchasing n advance ticket to NY, and was shocked to learn that they wanted me buried where I live, so they would have the comfort of my friends during Shiva. I have locally purchased a plot and the costs of burial and a memorial service.

There's a great song by Don Henley of Eagles fame called The Heart of the Matter. It's all about forgiveness. In the live version he says, this song took 40 years to write and 4 minutes to perform. I think it was a metaphor for having relationships that could be built up for many decades and then destroyed in 4 minutes by saying the wrong thing at the wrong time. "To err is human, to forgive divine." I thought it was Shakespearean, but it was said by Alexander Pope.
