Hi all

13:43
CCU Online - Denver, Colorado

13:52
Hey, everyone! Welcome to OLC Live! I’m joining from Sacramento, CA in a mostly empty new rental :) These are very informal dialogues, and for small groups especially, we welcome relaxed dialogue

14:07

19:56

21:32
Greetings Clea!

21:35
Michelle! So good to see you here! And Clea! Hello!

21:46
Nate! Still got your stickers on my laptop :)

21:52
hey Jenae!

21:52
And Karen authored one of the most useful and timely books out there right now: https://www.amazon.com/Creating-Simple-Sustainable-Educational-Videos/dp/1642670855/ref=asc_df_1642670855/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=430996710134&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=16972780244521105095&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9030289&hvtargid=pla-902712622039&psc=1&tag=&ref=&adgrpid=99728110506&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvadid=430996710134&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=16972780244521105095&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9030289&hvtargid=pla-902712622039

21:52
I see a lot of familiar and new names here, great to see you all!

22:09
Oops yucky link there but its a great book :-)

22:11
Karen’s book is 💯

22:21
And I see lots of familiar faces from across the conference here…Hi, Mary Beth and Annette!

22:22
+1 Clea

22:30
I’ve recommended Karen’s book SO many times to faculty this summer

23:13
::snap snap::

23:17
Greetings all!

23:20
same, Jenae. One director really latched on bc he was about to order a bunch of fancy tech kits! And I think I convinced him we don’t need fancy tech, we need to increase faculty comfort in making videos :)

23:32
Hi, everyone! And ditto the kudos for Karen's book - it's such a great resource!

23:59
here here!

24:13
latching on to the “compensate” - let’s hope a new secretary of Edu will help!

24:28
Hi Patrick!

24:41
Love the warm fuzzies, shout-outs, and community-building! That’s what we’re here for, right? :)

25:03
Congrats, Patrick! Looks like we’ve got lots of reading to do here...

25:12
honestly, was kinda convinced Patrick Dempsey of McDreamy fame had switched to online learning 😂 nice to meet you, Patrick

25:31
Like we can do here! Amen

25:32
(that’s a Grey’s Anatomy ref and no I haven’t watched the show)

25:35
I present at 3:30 but want to stop by and say hi!

25:45
I got it, Clea! :-)

25:52
I will read the hell out of that book

26:37
😂

26:43
virtual shirts?

27:17
No worries Aimee…this ends at 3:30pm ET

28:08
One thing I do is change my name in zoom to say other stuff about me…

28:15
Show pets and kids when they barge in! :)

28:20
Yes, Aimee!

28:25
#1 is making mistakes - most of my work is in training staff and faculty, and modeling mistakes is 💯

28:28
#petsofzoom

29:03
I actually play music at the beginning of each class period. I let the students choose a song that is their happy song. It plays during attendance and helps excite us.

29:09
(I lead weekly Q&A session for our current LMS transition, and am completely unafraid to say “I don’t know, but let’s find out together”)

29:13
video-based feedback on assignments.

29:14
Respond to student requests and questions with compassion and understanding. If they are relating something upsetting or tragic - offer condolences! Prioritize well being over deadlines and “standards"

29:14
I love that Celia

29:25
My 6 year old is virtual learning and pops in to wave to my classes and tell them good morning.

29:36
*try not to haha (love it)

29:40
Ask my students to take 'selfies' with their favorite tool from the course's list.

29:41
love that Celia

29:43
Love it, Celia! I have a faculty member who actually creates Spotify playlists for all her courses!

29:48
Thanks!

29:55
I have daily assignment discussions post on the discussion board, and the students are asked to respond with comments, and use their names - helps to remind them they are not just print words, but are human

29:57
Love the call for compassion, Michelle!

29:59
that’s so creative, Salvador!

30:06
Discussion posts are great too, Kaye!

30:20
And yes, that’s creative, Salvador!

30:29
i'm running a course (Building Learning Communities) that is fully student-led, based on their interests and goals. great way to invite them to bring their integrated selves into class.

30:37
I have a yuja intro video

30:42
Love these ideas!

30:44
small group, video-based, synchronous discussions have been super well received due to their ability to facilitate social presence and accountability to peers.

30:50
I send periodic emails telling the students that I care about them and ask how they and their families are doing because I care about them as people. It means a lot.

31:08
Outreach in online is huge Celia, that’s awesome

31:09
Celia, that is awesome! I need to do that.

31:12
Thanks!

31:16
thepretzl.com

31:21
Not every email has to be an announcement or admonishment :-)

31:23
my cats are often camera-shy, but I really like my new rhino friend….will put camera on so you can look out for him 😉

31:35
maybe silly.but simple — I post some pics, like the pumpkins that my family and I carved for Halloween; pics of the beautiful fall colors - students remark on these simple things often

31:50
Oh I want to see Clea’s rhino

32:00
Love the seasonal connection, Annette! That can help people feel grounded in tradition and ritual

32:12
pics are fun for interaction - love the pumpkin idea

32:22
Cute rhino

32:25
RHINO!!

32:30
I change my background every class and let the students make suggestions. This week was Disney week for the conference. Students like picking vacation backgrounds.

32:37
Oooh, “feedback cycles”

32:41
Have to run but already learned so much. Have a great day!

32:47
I don’t have kids, I’m in my 30s and just have a lot of stuffed animals...

32:49
Virtual backgrounds can be super fun. I’ve heard of faculty using them for trivia. Guess where in the world I am.

32:58
Another great one Celia! I’ve also heard about inviting students to change their avatars

33:22
yes, that’s another great one especially for the camera shy

33:38
I made mine in canva.com :) and I’ve made some for friends!

33:52
I also made matching backgrounds for all my student employees…will turn on that one

34:02
Ask learners what they know… Great connection to the learning sciences too!

34:14
Clea, always new! Love the backgrounds

34:18
everyone got dragons and their name. Dragons were an inside joke :)

34:23
Nice background Clea…are those dragons?

34:25
Building on prior knowledge can help create new pathways

34:34
Or what they think they know.

34:41
I ask them too, and have them write a journal entry and post on blackboard for all to see - describe what they know and what they expect the class to teach them

35:30
there’s my baby behind me

35:34
we made a teacher practice space (online tool) for roleplaying conversations to figure out what students know, called Eliciting Learner Knowledge

35:37
Ungrading? Is anyone doing it?

35:46
Clea, here’s mine

36:25
New upgrading book https://www.amazon.com/Ungrading-Students-Undermines-Learning-Education/dp/1949199827/ref=pd_lpo_14_t_0/144-4781074-4254101?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=1949199827&pd_rd_r=946beba6-baaf-4f6d-9b68-7ae33f37fc7c&pd_rd_w=6kmwF&pd_rd_wg=CI6j8&pf_rd_p=7b36d496-f366-4631-94d3-61b87b52511b&pf_rd_r=SZR4K5F1FMAME8PV5V3A&psc=1&refRID=SZR4K5F1FMAME8PV5V3A

36:30
Thank you this is more interesting and interactive session than I expected!!

36:30
Would love to hear about whether anyone is building in some good Ungrading infrastructure in their online classes

36:34
+1!

36:46
Yay, Salvador! Glad you’re enjoying the dialogue! 👍🏻

36:50
Dan that sounds super cool

36:52
I wrote about this the other day…it’s shorter than a book :) https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/formative-assessment-online-learning-let-them-ride-bike-karen-costa/

36:53
Thank you Salvador! That is the goal here

37:14
Yes, I’d love to learn more about that, Dan! Role play is such a great tool

37:20
longer-term projects built on learner interests help them develop confidence and expertise they can share with others

37:51
I’m doing ungrading this fall. Followed Laura Gibb’s format: http://oudigitools.blogspot.com/2019/03/getting-rid-of-grades-book-chapter.html. Students “declare” whether they complete an assignment and get the full points if they do it. I focus all my time on meaningful feedback. Students also provide feedback to each other throughout the course.

38:15
Jason, my daughter loves your office and Captain America items.

38:16
Ooh, thanks for sharing your approach, Mary!

38:25
I saw you here Mary and figured you might chime in. Laura Gibbs is a hero of mine!

38:25
eliciting learner knowledge. the pic shows cards, but there's also an online version https://libby.teachingsystemslab.org/projects/elk/

38:58
Thanks for sharing that link, Dan!

39:04
Everything they do is “public”—they get to see each other’s work throughout the quarter/semester. Everyone gets to know each other more and form a community.

39:31
That’s such a valuable “bonus,” Mary!

39:33
Mary might want to come on live and talk about how she shifted the work with formative work...

39:34
@Mary, I love that!

39:51
Ooh, yes, Mary… would you be willing to say more on the mic?

39:54
I love that, too, Mary!

40:04
Sure, just have to make sure I don’t have any salad in my teeth :)

40:12
Yes - I feel validated for ditching a few of the usual weekly assignments towards the end of the semester now. It just needed midcourse correction and there was too much (and student were doing well)

40:15
I’ll happily give Laura Gibbs a shoutout on twitter about this :) she’s amazing

40:33
yes @Karen, making the process explicit and visual!

40:36
project work for a real audience, as opposed to just for a grade, has lots of opportunities for feedback from other practitioners or real audiences

40:43
i’m buzzing with caffeine overload lol

41:09
drop your handle, Mary!

41:12
Well I’ll fix that right now! :-)

41:13
You got yourself a new follow, Mary :)

41:14
https://twitter.com/mcklann

41:14
I’m @cleamahoney :)

41:17
Go follow Mary

41:20
woot done!

41:34
You can learn more about Mary here: https://www.maryklann.com/

41:35
Re the last speaker: Not to mention that we have to be mindful of the weight of so many assignments a week as well. utilizing our LMSs to help our time management on feedback.

42:11
Yes, great point, Nancy… The LMS can be a valuable tool for organizing the experience (and this could happen in blogs too if you’re using a blog framework)

42:11
Sounds like a space of mutualism, benefits students and faculty

43:24
And if anyone here has any suggestions for parts of the OLC conference they’re excited about, please share that too!

43:34
Ooo spaces of mutualism

43:35
Any flags for particular sessions you’re attending or are looking forward to is always appreciated

43:41
“Spaces of mutualism” is a great expression

43:47
would love to learn more examples of teaching time management online

44:15
Yes. Leadership needs to hear this loudly and often. And we do too. Thank you.

44:43
patrick@pretzl.me

44:57
@Kaye: That would be a great topic of conversation for a future session!

45:11
would happily attend that session

45:25
The wound is where the light gets in

45:26
+1 Michelle! Totally agree!

45:34
Whooooa, that’s such a profound statement, karen

45:35
