Rick Vaughn
39:37
how did the cranes get there?(a) It depends on the size of the cranes...smaller cranes can be driven directly to the locations, larger cranes are transported to the site and built in place, there are cranes that assemble and disassemble themselves.

Team Leaders and mentors - please free to respond to any of these questions in the chat box. Thanks!
Ruby Chen
43:05
When and where was the first building built?
Michael Fitz
43:24
Nice our textbook! ;-)
Mario Quesada
43:47
Even within the role of being an "Architect" there are multiple options - you can be on the creative design side, you can assist with the production of drawings and specifications to make the design "buildable", or you can work in the role of Construction Administrator and assist with the building actually being constructed. Lots of variety!
Ruby Chen
43:52
lol I saw my biology textbook
Jason Dunster
44:30
Who is responsible for receiving the money after a building is completed?(a) Typically, an Owner will pay the designers (architects and engineers) for their work (drawings, specifications, consulting) and separately pay the Contractor for the actual construction.

What if you want to be computer engineer? what fields do you have to focus on?
Moises Lique
45:09
If it takes years to finish a building do Architects have the choice to be in multiple projects at the same time? Or do they only focus on one project till it finishes and then move on to another project?
David Hernandez
45:14
so structure engineers also have to research the type of land and common disasters near the build
Ruby Chen
45:24
lol I just learned about structure engineering in applied chemistry haha
Kelsey Lew
45:27
Ruby -- some would say the first 'building' is actually something called 'the primitive hut'. Give that a little Google search -- it's technically a conceptual idea of how we approach architecture and what our relationship is to the built environment.
Ed Gaites
45:49
what are some ways a structural engineer would protect a building from natural disasters ?
Mario Quesada
46:10
Regarding choice of projects, it depends. It's not uncommon for some architects to work on multiple projects at the same time
Jason Dunster
46:30
how do they get the right amount of supplies for them to build(a) The design and construction team will work together to determine the amount of materials needed for a project. The contractor will order the materials and use them to construct the building.
Mario Quesada
46:34
I have definitely worked on several at once. And I have focused on just one too
Rick Vaughn
46:49
the cost of construction is relative to project location, building type, materials utilized to construct the building, funding source, and product type itself....for example the cost per square foot for a hospital will differ greatly from the cost of a warehouse.
Kelsey Lew
47:43
Aarjuion, it depends! The requirements focus on a) the degree you hold (either undergraduate or graduate) and that has a set number of years (also whether the program is accredited or not), and then b) taking and passing the ARE or Architecture Registration Exam, which is actually six (!!) exams, plus an additional one for the state of California (because of seismic/earthquakes).
Jason Dunster
47:43
If it takes years to finish a building do Architects have the choice to be in multiple projects at the same time? Or do they only focus on one project till it finishes and then move on to another project?(A) Architects, engineers, and contractors are usually working on many projects at the same time.
Andrea Stalker
47:48
Regarding how long it takes to get an architecture license in CA . . . loaded question, as it is highly dependpent on the person. At a base minimum, CA requireds 8 years of experience (5 years of school + 3 years of work) before you can get your license. In real life, it often takes a lot longer as you balance work, life, and taking the exams.

Ruby Chen
48:50
What is the average cost paid after building?
Jason Dunster
49:20
How long does it normally take for a building to be completed?(a) depends on the type and size of project, but months to years is typical.
Michelle Doroteo
49:28
what’s the difference between a construction engineer and a regular construction person? ex. I know someone who is a construction worker but they didn’t study to become an engineer, they’re just a regular construction worker.
Jason Dunster
50:31
What is the average cost paid after building?(a) Your ACE mentors work on projects from a few thousand dollars to MANY BILLIONS of dollars!!
Michael Chang (FHS Mentor)
50:36
What do you need to do when planning to build a house?@ tyler (A): there is a long answer to this. I suggest asking in the break out room as we would need to know what you mean by "planning". As an architect, you first need to check zoning laws to clarify what you can and cannot do. Then figure out what the client can afford or want, etc.
Ester Rosas
51:32
whats the shortest amount of time someone has built a building
Jachin Chyn
51:58
i made a hut once in a few minutes
Rick Vaughn
52:04
Dating back to around 3600 BCE, the Knap of Howar is the oldest building in the world and is most likely the oldest house still standing. The Knap of Howar consists of two stone-built houses that were discovered in the 1930s when erosion revealed parts of the stone walls.
Jason Dunster
52:17
Contractors have professionals and laborers on their staff. The education requirements vary but they can all be excellent careers. Good breakout discussion, ask your mentor.
Moises Lique
52:26
For Architects they need to draw the buildings and be very detailed. Does Ace provide a program or sessions to learn how to draw like that?
Jachin Chyn
52:54
Whats the difference between architectural engineering and civil engineering?
Mario Quesada
52:56
Fun fact... In December 2002, a house was built by Habitat for Humanity in Shelby County, Alabama in 3 hours, 26 minutes, and 34 seconds. They beat the previous record that was set in New Zealand of 3 hours, 44 minutes, and 59 seconds. The three bedroom, two bath home was constructed for a single mother who was a nursing technician.
Kelsey Lew
53:18
Ester -- construction takes time! But with some recent technology, some buildings can be 3D printed and only take a FEW DAYS! :D
Ester Rosas
54:16
thank you for answering my question kelsey lew
Rick Vaughn
54:17
On December 17 Shelby County Habitat for Humanity broke the world record for the fastest house ever built, clocking in at 3 hours, 26 minutes and 34 seconds.Dec 22, 2002
Michael Chang (FHS Mentor)
54:22
For Architects they need to draw the buildings and be very detailed. Does Ace provide a program or sessions to learn how to draw like that?(a) during the spring semester, ACE does a "project". During that project, you will be exposed to many programs/tools that architects use to create the drawings. To master that, I have worked 12 years so far after graduating. I don't think I am near to that point.
Chance Chen
54:46
What's the longest time it took to build a building.
Jason Dunster
54:55
How do architects gain connections for getting materials(a) Architects spend considerable time researching materials for use in construction. They do this by meeting with experts, reading materials, web research, etc.
shantelle ortiz
55:45
Any advice for what type of work I should include in my portfolios for applying to undergrad architecture programs?

What’s the average amount of time it takes to complete school for an architect, engineer, and construction manager/contractor?
Andrea Stalker
56:49
Yes, absolutely recommend going to an accredited architecture program.
Michael Chang (FHS Mentor)
56:50
Any advice for what type of work I should include in my portfolios for applying to undergrad architecture programs?(A): Depends on the program and school. For some school, you may want to include any art. For others, they may not require a portfolio. It is typically really required for a graduate program though
Jenny Ly
56:53
Any advice for what type of work I should include in my portfolios for applying to undergrad architecture programs? A: You can include anything that shows your creativity. They can be drawings, sculptures, photographs, etc.
Jason Dunster
57:50
Most bachelor degrees in Architecture/Engineer/Construction are 4-5 years.
Mario Quesada
57:58
Any advice for what type of work I should include in my portfolios for applying to undergrad architecture programs?A) When I applied, I included sketches I did in high school of cities and landscapes, artwork, and photographs. Agreed that a portfolio that showcases your creativity and any possible experience with architecture is great
shantelle ortiz
58:02
Thank you very much, the majority of schools I’ve been looking at require portfolios and I wasn’t sure how artsy to get with it
Jenny Ly
58:40
What’s the average amount of time it takes to complete school for an architect, engineer, and construction manager/contractor? A: For an architect, you can go to an undergrad accredited program for 5 years to have a professional degree in architecture. Or you can major in anything as an undergrad an go to a master’s program for 3 years for a M.Arch I
Connor Tran
59:24
How did they build the Leaning Tower of Pisa when was leaning?
Joe O'Hara
59:27
RE: portfolio contents, yes, anything to show your creativity. I did a lot of sketches of (mostly) buildings and that was my portfolio basically.
Mark Patterson
59:28
Whats the difference between architectural engineering and civil engineering?(a) Architectural engineering is very similar to structural engineering. Structural engineering is under the umbrella of Civil Engineers. Civil engineers can emphasize in hydrology (water), soils, transportation, and structures. Architectural engineering focuses on just structures based on the list above.
Mario Quesada
59:39
Going to an college or university with an accredited architecture program will significantly cut the amount of time it takes to ultimately get your license, especially if that is your goal
Sage Shingle
59:58
Jachin -- There are a few different architectural engineering college programs across the US. I only know personally of the one at Cal Poly SLO. Arch Eng can be considered structural engineering for buildings. Civil engineering programs includes a number of different areas of expertise; structural, geotechnical, water resources, transportation, environmental. Ask for more info if this isn't enough for you to clarify

Kent Kaewwaen
01:03:24
Why did the constructors of the Eiffel Tower wanted to build the Eiffel Tower in the shape of an "A"? A: same as pyramid or sand dune. The structurally is more efficient when there is less mass/weight the higher you go up.
Mario Quesada
01:03:36
Any advice for when applying to architect programsA) Apply to several, they are difficult to get in to because they are usually impacted (more people apply then can get in) however don't let that deter you. Look carefully at the curriculum of the program, the location of the school, and cost of course

What's the difference between Cal Poly SLO and CPP regarding architecture?(A): The two Cal Poly's both have a lot to offer. CPP program is a great mix of concept, design, and practical/technical knowledge. It also have one of these most diverse student bodies for an architecture program. Cal Poly SLO (depending on who you take for studio) can have a more theoretical bent, but also provide a great foundation of technical and practical knowledge.
Rick Vaughn
01:04:06
Architecture focuses more on the spatial functionality and aesthetics of the development work and is more concerned with the artistry, look, feel and functionality of the design.Civil Engineering concentrates on the structural elements of the design, making certain that the structure can endure normal and extreme conditions.

Kelsey Lew (Mentor - Dorsey High)
01:49:13
there are ways to build underwater, it just gets expensive! there are underwater hotels, but there's other things like Diego said, like bridges, or even foundations that have to be under the water table. It requires special waterproofing and care when it comes to material selection, building joints, etc. I'm sure there are special aquatic engineers that would have to be on the design team, and you'd have to involve your structural engineers heavily too!
Joe O'Hara
01:49:50
Keep in mind, too, that concrete can cure (harden) underwater.
