Dr. Revilla makes a really important point. It’s really OK to put your academic work in context with everything else going on your life.
Anita Tijerina Revilla
39:00
So true. Especially because we can’t get to do that virtually as easily as in person. Please talk in the zoom calls and in the office hours.
Linda Essig
40:42
We have programming called “Connect the Dots” that is designed to help our Arts & Letters students connect their classroom learning to the rest of their lives. Also, Cal State LA as a very robust Career Services Center for the campus as a whole.
Danelle Dyckhoff
41:15
Also, don't be afraid at ask questions about things you "should" know. That's called hidden curriculum--rules, guidelines, and expectations that you feel you're expected to know, but may not--and so many of your professors are really committed to breaking down hidden curriculum for their students. I had one student miss out on the opportunity of going to office hours for an entire year because they thought office hours were reserved for professors to work in their offices, and students shouldn't disturb them during that time. Ask those questions! If there is something you're not familiar with--office hours, syllabus, etc.--ask what they're for.
Anita Tijerina Revilla
42:04
Good point Prof. Dyckhoff!
Karen Armenta
43:22
What are the opportunities for the internship?
Stephanie Morales
44:41
I was about to ask if internships were only available to juniors and seniors
Danelle Dyckhoff
46:13
Yes! So important, Dean Essig.
Linda Essig

I had the same experience, Dr. Revilla! Started out as a Bio major to become a doctor because I wanted a job where I could make money and help my family. Two years in, I realized Bio was not for me. I switched to English and never looked back.
Anita Tijerina Revilla
01:12:44
Lol…Thanks for the resonance Dr. Dyckhoff! First-Gen life ❤️
Danelle Dyckhoff
01:13:20

Students: you're welcome to share any questions you have for our panelists!
Anita Tijerina Revilla
01:16:51
I’m realizing that this panel is what ALL of our students need. So many college students don’t have this info. I hope that Avanza will make this into a youtube video that we can share with our students as well, with everyone’s permission.
Jennifer Sanchez, BH Avanza
01:17:37
Yes, we will be sharing this recording with our schools and partners to share with students and families!

Anita Tijerina Revilla
01:29:08
Community college is SO important because many people in our community and especially first generation people most often start there. See this for more info on the Chicana/o educational pipeline: https://www.chicano.ucla.edu/files/LPIB_13March2006.pdf
Linda Essig
01:30:13
Yes! Community Colleges are a critical component of our community — and great partners with the CSU system on helping students find the best educational pipeline for them (and their families).
Ken Chaiprasert
01:30:39
Thank you so much, Dr. Revilla and Dr. Essig. So glad to meet such awesome colleagues at CSULA and for our campus to be partnered with your campus!!

Yes! Let’s definitely stay connected. I have good friends at ELAC and would love to bring our students together more often.
Anita Tijerina Revilla
01:35:08
Yes, it is interesting that I majored in Religion, and I’m also a queer person. And it was great because I learned about different religions, and their cultural/social influence and impact.
Anita Tijerina Revilla
01:36:06
We have very similar experiences Dr. Agredano. I studied with Cornel West and David Carrasco. I was a “David Carrasco major” 😂
Linda Essig
01:38:16
Jennifer: I want to thank YOU for providing this forum. I hope the students are learning as much as I am from the panel.
Anita Tijerina Revilla
01:38:43
I also have friends that majored in religion who became medical doctors, lawyers, business leaders, etc.
Linda Essig
01:39:50
…and I’ve had students who were theatre majors who are now lawyers, health policy wonks, doctors, etc etc.
Felipe Agredano
01:40:13
Yes, let's stay in touch Dr. West was my advisor and we help organize student protest to pressure Harvard to bring David Carrasco. We have to build the queer people of color, faith and religion. :) <3 !!!
Anita Tijerina Revilla
01:40:25
Yes!
Danelle Dyckhoff
01:40:44
I would be happy to share my response with the students via email or now. I have a lot of debt and have no problem talking frankly about it.
Linda Essig
