Nice background, Paul!
Paul Macklin
03:24
Thanks! :-)
Paul Macklin
03:43
That's from about 2 weeks ago.
Paul Macklin
04:13
time flies way too fast. I guess 3 weeks.
Paul Macklin
09:31
at $300, proably better off building principal / interest if we can. Or subsidizing electronic participation for students (assuming a hybrid format next year …)
Mihaela Ciupe
12:40
Good idea! Although we only have one year to spend the money.
Paul Macklin
13:33
thumbsupemojii
Jonathan Forde
13:45
Unfortunately subgroup budgets don’t currently roll over from year to year, so we can’t be that prudent
Paul Macklin
14:16
ah, understood. they don't want to see funds go unspent and turned into huge surplus / warchests
Paul Macklin
14:53
WE're happy to contribute agent-based moeling materials for a webinar etc.
Paul Macklin
15:02
already developing online curriculum for physicell workshops etc.
Miranda Lynch
15:02
Is there a forum for posting webinars of interest?
Paul Macklin
17:25
could we use the smb slack workspace
Amber Smith
17:30
The SMB Forum can be used for this
Amber Smith
17:37
And, yes, SMB Slack
Paul Macklin
17:48
forgot all about the smb forum.
Paul Macklin
18:31
SMB forum is unfortunately pretty invisible. no login link at all on the main website
Paul Macklin
18:47
lke "we have a forum?"
Paul Macklin
19:03
:-)
Amber Smith
19:16
Haha. I know. It’s not my favorite
Paul Macklin
20:25
We gave up on forums awhile ago -- too much maintenance work. We use slack workspaces for that functionality now. (asynchronous communication divided into channels and threads with DMs)
ESTEBAN ABELARDO HERNANDEZ VARGAS
20:58
What about the Viral Dynamic conference that was every 2 years?
Amber Smith
21:35
It’s happening this fall. Online I believe
Daniel Reeves
22:01
I really liked the Keystone meeting, it is of course small/expensive, but if it was balanced a bit by the SMB meeting as a broader reach that would feel a little better
Paul Macklin
23:02
like Gordon conferences too
Maria Rodriguez
23:09
Another possibility is Banff. Local expenses are covered by the organisations, which helps to lower the costs.
Miranda Lynch
23:16
Ditto for CSHL meetings
Paul Macklin
23:21
Banff is a super idea, or CSHL
Amber Smith
23:24
Ooo…Banff
Paul Macklin
23:40
Or that place in Victoria Australia
Jonathan Forde
24:23
Is Oaxaca a possibility? I am not sure how funding for that works…
Paul Macklin
24:35
… MATRIX (took a moment to remember)(
Paul Macklin
24:59
I believe things like Banff, MATRIX, etc. let you apply for a grant to fund the meeting and its participants.
Maria Rodriguez
25:09
Banff has 3 locations: Canada, Mexico (Oaxaca) and China. When submitting a proposal, a preference might be indicated.
ESTEBAN ABELARDO HERNANDEZ VARGAS
25:12
About Oaxaca is a possibility but we need to submit a proposal, it was close cause COVID-19
Ivan Ramirez
25:14
Would it be possible to plan an MRC through AMS?
Paul Macklin
25:23
THomas Hillen has the magic sauce for Banff
Jonathan Forde
25:49
That’s right! I somehow forgot the Banff-Oaxaca connection
Paul Macklin
25:50
The math place in the Bay Area also an option
Jessica Maral Conway
26:10
MSRI
Paul Macklin
26:16
thank you!
Morgan Craig
26:35
I am at U Montréal, and could help if Banff is of interest
Paul Macklin
26:43
Banff!!
Amber Smith
27:01
@Morgan - Banff is ALWAYS of interest :) In the summer preferably
Paul Macklin
27:10
winter for auroras :-)
Morgan Craig
27:15
Duly noted Amber!
Amber Smith
28:24
The Education Subgroup did one recently too
Miranda Lynch
28:41
There was recent special issue of immunoinformatics. Coordinated by Nek Valous, I think.
Paul Macklin
29:18
right!
Antony Humphries, Prof.
30:32
The lead time is quite long with Banff. Its a great place though. I'd be happy to help with a submission.
ESTEBAN ABELARDO HERNANDEZ VARGAS
31:48
I also would be happy to help, I am located in Mexico....
Jonathan Forde
34:35
Thank you for the offers of help, Antony and Esteban. I will make a note and be sure to circle back to you.
Miranda Lynch
36:17
As a counter thought, there are currently a LOT of special issues coming out on Covid19, and that should be taken into consideration. Something broader would be welcome
reinhard.laubenbacher@medicine.ufl.edu
36:39
We have a special collection on Covid19 already.
Paul Macklin
37:05
ah yes.
Jessica Maral Conway
37:28
In my (admittedly limited) experience the hardest part is getting submissions. Would be nice to have some core contributors at the outset along some theme?
Paul Macklin
37:43
supercool
Amber Smith
42:01
Some options that have worked for other Subgroups:
Amber Smith
42:15
Groups for poster/talk judging
Paul Macklin
42:21
sort of a parliamentary model I guess?
Paul Macklin
44:36
"standing committees" for posters, minisymposium, newsletter, etc.
Juan Gutierrez
46:07
FYI, regarding the special issue of multi-scale modeling, we will discuss it during the last talk on Thursday at http://schedule.smb2021.org/MS20/ECOP-MS20.html
Paul Macklin
50:58
probably board should draft the rule change and then post to group for comment / vote, since it's a fairly significant change
Paul Macklin
51:43
thanks for proactive leadership on this Jonathan
Daniel Reeves
58:11
Great discussion sorry I have to run, thanks for all the efforts organizing, look forward to seeing you eventually in person!!
Jonathan Forde
59:13
Thanks so much everyone!
Juan Gutierrez
59:24
Many thanks!
