There’s been a lot of conflict on IG with accounts run by BIPOC doing social justice work getting their posts removed or suspended for unfounded reports of “hate speech.” How is IG working towards making it more fair? For one specific example, The Mahjong Line as previously mentioned by Claire is reporting BIPOC-led accounts and successfully getting posts calling for their accountability getting removed. It feels like for smaller accounts, none of the review requests are taken seriously. It has significantly made it difficult for many accounts I follow to communicate regularly with their followers.

I’d really love to boost @ Hannah Hwang’s question

+1 Hannah, and also that their stories and posts are not showing up on their follower’s feeds

That’s a great q! We will ask these at the end of the presentation, so please keep the q’s coming!

One issue I’ve been having with hashtags, is that it welcomes trolls to comment

For those who run nonprofits, you’ll need to register through FB to collect donations. Link here: https://socialimpact.facebook.com/charitable-giving/

I find a problem with reels is being “tied down” to the Spotify selection of their audio choice because of copyright issues. Has this been a detriment to your companies? Especially in terms of equity and diversity.

I’d love to hear the IG Partnership Team’s thoughts on the future of making “linking out” more possible within the app. Historically, IG has made providing external links difficult (probably because it’s important to the brand that we stay within the app). However, it’s becoming important that we’re able to cite fact-based sources within our educational activist-based carousel posts, or link out to social justice organizations we want to amplify in our activism-based content. What are our options outside of tagging other IG handles in these cases?

What resources (books, videos, articles, etc.) you do recommend for those of us looking to learn how to create more engaging/attractive materials on social media? (E.g., what tools to use for editing videos, what fonts may work best on IG, etc.?)

Will be interested to see what the team says, but FWIW until the account I manage got the swipe up feature, we used the Linkin.bio feature which is free on the scheduling platform Later

I am a writer. I use my stories for activism/engagement and my feed for personal life photos. I feel like it may be a bad strategy to mix all of this into one account and that it may be good to use separate accounts for my writing, activism and personal lives, because those who arrive to my feed may expect a personal account and receive activism in my stories, but I also think it’s nice to give people the option to mute my stories if they don’t want that. Given that I don’t want to spend yet more time on my phone, what do you suggest - is my current approach ok or separate accounts are the way to go? (I would have to build the following up from scratch)

I wonder if we could spend more time on activism and less on general settings?

I second Hannah’s and Nanya’s Qs! Wondering the same thing. Different platform, but I had photos wiped off a FB page post about Uyghur camps and don’t know how that happened.

I agree. I am a food account, but believe in talking about current issues and activism. My account’s visibility is at an all-time low.

We can followup with everyone re: Mahjong line + welcome everyone to send along examples so we can get them over to the IG team.

Lila, thanks for answering. Yes Claire, thank you for expanding on my comment — that is just one example to illustrate how problematic these instances are for the big picture. I appreciate your willingness to review this particular instance, but how can we prevent this from happening on a bigger scale? This is a widespread and prevalent issue for many, many accounts. A lot of accounts are having to create backup accounts and start building their followers from scratch as a result.

I know it is also a common issue on LGBTQIA+ folks’ profiles too

I had one of my posts taken down titled “White Sexual Imperialism” because it was flagged by a generic content robot for keyword issues (I think) + reported by trolls. It eventually came back but not sure how to preempt this initial removal.

Can Instagram consider democratizing the stories swipe up feature for all people? It’s hard to amplify other people’s work without that option.

But also why are so many activist’s posts getting taken down when conspiracy theorists’s posts stay up spreading really harmful and violent misinformation? I would love to know how it’s decided what’s taken down.
