How to Support and Retain Your Childcare Staff During Stressful Times - Shared screen with speaker view
Yes, I am able to see it
Hi - I hear you :)
Keeping our staff happy and motivated
Finding suitable candidates who want to work
I want to compensate staff fairly for what they do, but need template for raises
What to plan for in contracts
Finding time to meet with my staff, speak with them, observe them
Hello! from Sarah Claborn and Angela Olafson
Good morning...moral is a a biggie for us...also fearful staff
Getting them to show up on time consistently!!!
i also fear that my staff may not take me seriously because I am younger than them
Convincing them to keep their masks on!
yes the masks!
hello from Garland, Tx
Hello From Brownsville Texas
It's especially hard to find quality applicants this year!
some staff were not confortable to come back to work even with covid guidelines
can you explain what you mean by “Hazard pay?”
How are you funding Hazard Pay?
we needed all of our grants and additional funding just to cover the loss of income from COVID. how did you find enough extra to do Hazard pay?
we do extra things for our staff monthly, buying lunch, personal notes, gifts on their birthday etc. but it always seems like they only appreciate it in the moment and the second something happens they don't like they forget about all the nice things we ever done for them in the past
We have the same issue Christina
Pamela Uehling shared this link as a good place to start for grants — https://usagrantapplications.org
Same issue we have too Christina
Another grant resource shared by Pamela: https://grantfundingusa.com
at our center we have company shirts the staff wear, so we are having fun dress days, This week is wear your favorite t-shirt day.
We have received a greater appreciation from parents post COVID since they realized how valuable we are to their family
we do a weekly shout-out on our Facebook page. each week we pick a staff member and recognize something great about them or their classroom
Friendly reminder to please use the Q&A section for your questions :)
Monday October 5 is world teacher day, we asked parents to make cards for their teachers
small gifts, give them a longer break time, and we include parents to appreciate the teachers
Christina , we do the same , disply their picture and some note on the big screen at the lobby where the parents, staff and children can see the teacher of the week/month
At our last staff meeting we asked our staff how they like to receive appreciation so we can be sure to touch on what makes each person feel the most appreciated
I also go to some of the trainings to sit with the staff-and hear the same trainings. Then we can talk during breaks or even lunch
better observe the staff first and decide what they really need training on
Not oversharing, stopping drama — good advice.
Don’t make empty promises and never forget what it is like to be in the classroom!
thin skin vs thick skin?
We try to create an environment in which employees feel accepted and respected. They also know that being professional is first and foremost. It took time to weed out the drama, but we insist on being professional.
Communication is the key
We also added in the parent a handbook, the option to collect a $1,500 "finders fee". There is also a policy around outside of business caregiving (babysitting)
Janette Lopez shared a great resource: https://www.appreciationatwork.com/5-languages-appreciation-workplace-improve-employee-engagement/
Some state employment laws don’t allow for no-compete policies — so best to check on that first
We include the parents to nominate an employee of the month
and we talk why this staff was chosen as the employee of the month
What times do you schedule monthly employee meetings? I have a difficult time getting everyone together…
We started Zoom staff meetings during COVID and we now have made this our monthly staff meeting practice on the first Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m.
We have a scheduled staff meeting on the second Tuesday of every month from 615-815 and they are all paid…it is not optional
We put out a yearly calendar that lists when each staff meeting is so staff can plan on that date each month.
Its AMAZING!!!! Thank you!
Can staff message each other? Like a chat room or group message?
^Katie, no they can reply to you and you can see their replies, but not each others
u can set up a chat between teachers that are assigned to the same room
