Only if the landlord is living in the house as well. If you have a separate door access and completely separately living space, then maybe not.

Hi Gozie, Sorry, I don't have that information. I know more typically an apartment rental (1 bedroom) could be around $1000 a month. less or more depending on size, accomodations, how nice it is.

I think there are probably more apartments near University. There are a number of new units being built as well.

Check out the accommodation page. It lists what the neighbourhoods are called that are closest to University campus. Such as Fort Richmond, Fort Garry

Then you would google the address of the rental and check the bus route from that address to the University campus, to see how many buses it would take. How long of a walk to the nearest bus stop.

Yes there is a quarantine protocol for students arriving. You need to contact the Student Arrival Coordinator for details on where to quarantine when you arrive. studentarrival@umanitoba.ca

i need to be there physically for my courses but because of my visa is not ready yet ,so my advisor said that we should stay until the end of December so do I need to reserve a place now?or the university campus?

@Negar, if you are wanting to live on campus, then yes you should apply right away. Spaces fill very quickly, if they are not already full.

This is GREAT advice. Take photos of your apartment before you move all your stuff in!!

If the landlord refuses to fix the appliances on the very first day of our complaint and the appliance is a necessity, could we take a legal action ?

@Gautam, yes then consult the RTB. They can ask the landlord to fix it. I would advise to consult them first, so you don't need to find a lawyer to pay for legal action. RTB is a good first step.

Even when we arrive to Winnipeg we will be in quarantine so we still don't get chance to inspect the rental property

I do not know. You could google it. and see if there's an average cost per square footage perhaps. It really depends on the unit like Dan said. houses are typically a lot more money to rent.

You can ask them "are you consulting all the laws" if you can get them to answer that question in writing, like Dan says - that's good if it comes up later. But it doesn't appear to be part of the general rental agreement.

No there aren't

@Charu, when you get the slides, review the earlier part of Dan's presentation. It says how much they can charge for deposit. I don't remember the answer.

Are there any unsafe areas that we should avoid looking accommodation in ?

@Gautam it's hard to say, but if you want to consult us with a listing, then we can advise you. When you're new to the city I would try to recommend being as close to campus as you can. Those areas are all typically safe. There are some more crime-dense areas in the north end/city centre which I would maybe avoid renting, also since its not convenient location to Fort Garry Campus.

I'm not familiar with ALL neighbourhoods in the city, but if I was looking for a rental, I would look at google view and take a look at the condition of houses and rentals near by. A good indication if things are being taken care of.
