I tried it once.

26:27
it was helpful to get the kids to interact with the lesson

26:35
Yes, I use it a lot with my high school students. I have also used it to make virtual word walls for my Newcomers.

Are you familiar with Playback Theater and the work of Jonathan Fox and Jo Salas? The same idea of "imagining" a different end to your story. It is very powerful

54:55
See a little clip of Kathleen's theater class in action: https://youtu.be/st3bho6VZxQ?t=193

56:43
I agree! I used very simple "fable" plays for my middle school beginner ESL students and they loved it. They even used different voices for the characters!

56:48
If administrators don't see the point, they have never sat through a drama representation and/or improv in the classroom.

57:22
and GREAT for pronunciation skills: intonation, stress & rhythm, thought grops, etc. "natural smooth speech” so different from writing

57:39
Anybody else use TPRS?

57:51
can you leave up your email again?

57:52
Missed Dr's email address. Please put into chat.

58:08
Love this!

58:17
How do you handle/moderate when you have two students say a refugee from north Africa who fled to Italy than America, and a Southern Italian expressing their views/experiences about immigration, and discrimination. With two people having vastly different perspectives of an event. How do you know when to let them go, or edit it

58:20
My level 1 high school students begged me to act out Romeo and Juliet. They really enjoyed it.

58:23
This is great!

58:25
Thank you

58:30
Thank you for sharing!

58:31
Thank you so much

Ciara - that's a great question. We address that in the book. Drama requires careful culturally aware facilitation.

01:03:28
Thanks, Aidan!

01:04:51
The reading and writing were designed to support the civics test. All questions to be read and answers to be written are reinforcing the Civics content by design.

Andy gained this level of knowledge about the process by interviewing many students after their appointments.

01:11:05
What percentage of people pass the test?

01:11:32
Most of The ILC's students pass the first time. If they don't, they can keep attending class until they do!

01:11:50
❤️

01:13:21
According to USCIS, 91% pass the interview on the first try. The test design aimed at a 94% pass rate.

01:13:29
Thank you Andy!!

01:27:56
From Jill: I have students who have faced this same “story” and situation…it’s frustrating for the ESL teacher…

01:28:04
this is the deficit lens!

01:28:05
She does not have an asset based belief system about her MLL students.

01:28:41
Many mainstream teachers only see what our students don't know - instead of what our students DO KNOW!

01:29:35
Emily, incredibly, I had a similar experience but the teacher writing something similar was a professor at the university. He wrote I had no chance to ever pass his class. Went on and on -in writing- about how bad my English was.

01:30:53
This is where our advocacy must shine.

01:31:12
Such a powerful story!!!

01:31:16
+1 Grace-Ann

01:31:17
Yws!!!!

01:31:19
I am so moved right now.

01:31:21
Wow, Federico. I had no idea.

01:32:01
Emily, have you met Carol Salva? I see you use her book.

01:33:02
I am so moved as well! Wow. I see so many students in similar situations. I was hired as a teacher based on life experiences (I am an alternate-route teacher). This is so affirming for me!

01:34:00
Your story is so important for all to hear -- continue to SHARE YOUR STORY!!!

01:34:19
+1, Nancy

01:34:51
beautiful beautiful message!

01:35:07
Your story, your emotion, your passion need to be amplified! Please tell it, write it, share it!

01:36:15
YES!

01:36:50
Absolutely!! So amazing!! Love this text. I feel this to my core for my “kids” - students

01:36:52
Emily, you should consider doing a TED Ed talk! you are AMAZING!

01:36:59
Wow! Powerful statement!!!!

01:37:17
omg that backpack metaphor is beyond important

01:37:27
Yes, Yes, it’s me and my family.

01:37:31
I do. That's me and my family!

01:37:36
Thank you for this! Powerful

01:37:47
awesome...so true 👍 🙌

01:37:50
Yes! I can identify with everything!

01:37:50
I want to HUG you -- and let you know how much I admire you!!

01:37:58
Can you please repeat the name of this book?

01:38:01
I see one of my students in your story!

01:38:03
I always hope/dream that my students would come back and work with me. . .there is so much that they can offer by working with "those that come after"

01:38:05
When I moved the US I wasspending my days at the public library.

01:38:09
Definitely! I really identify with this feeling as an EL growing up. I love sharing with my students about my culture and learning about theirs as well.

01:38:31
Ask again just in case: Emily, do you know Carol Salva? I would love to introduce you to her.

01:38:45
Thank you for this powerful and touching presentation

01:38:48
Oh... they know each other, Federico..

01:38:53
Your delivery was outstanding. More people need to hear this! It made me think of StoryCorps, also the book The Arrival by Shaun Tan - an incredible wordless picture book of the motivations, persistence and passion that is part of every immigrant's journey. Thank you!

01:39:12
Thank you for your passion and your story of resilience! Larissa Chuprina, ESL and Culture Coach

01:39:17
This is not my story…but I believe I can facilitate the experience of my students since we have other things in common—being parents etc. (yes, adult students).

01:39:24
Thank you for sharing your story!

01:39:25
I see so many of my adult students in this story. Thank you for so elegantly and eloquently expressing your emotions and experiences.

01:39:26
@Stephanie Foran The book is titled "Dreamers" by Yuyi Morales

01:39:27
Great. Thanks, Beth.

01:39:27

01:39:42
@Aidan Li - Thank you so much!

Thank you very much! It was amazing, very helpful!

01:43:49
Hear, Hear, Emily! the name is so important to our identity. For adults as well as children.

01:43:59
Agreed! Name pronunciation is very important!

01:44:55
Great book: Yo soy, I am by Jacquelyn Leon; about names and idenity

01:45:22
For older kids and adults, I have used MY NAME by Sandra Cisneros as a mentor text and rewrote with their names

01:46:05
I fully understand when your name is mispronounced and your identity is not accepted by your peers or colleagues.

01:46:21
Can we have that link in the chat?

Emily, for newcomer students do you make books available in Spanish or other native languages when they don't have the English yet for reading in English? if so what might you use? You are amazing. I always get so much inspiration from your presentations.

01:51:52

Thank you so much for your story…it helps to remind me why I am an ESL teacher!

01:52:47
Emily, last year, I tweeted you about sharing your story with my students. I only wish I had shared it earlier. I had a bunch of reluctant 6th graders. And only by sharing were they starting to open up...

01:55:07
Administrators at my school will not let me purchase textbooks in students' native language for our newcomers. So frustrating!

01:55:21
Sad!

well said! Words have different meanings to each person

02:20:45
I can't agree more, Andrea. But what do we do in the current political context? In Texas is becoming illegal to even talk about the existence of White Supremacy or of critical narrative...

02:21:05
WE have some suggestions!

02:21:30
just wait … we got you Frederico

02:23:45
SO ARE WE!!!

02:24:13
A favorite

02:24:45
Check him out: https://www.shauntan.net/arrival-book

02:25:12
I mentioned The Arrival in Chat in a previous presentation. The only thing I'd say about this gorgeous book is that the persecution in native lands can be perhaps too intense and scary for small kids.

02:26:25
Hi Elaine. Yes! We need to read the books and choose the ones that work best for our students and context. Not all books will work for all

02:26:27
I just ordered it! Thanks

02:26:57
Our goal is usually just to engage in dialogue that prompts us to think deeply about our book selections

02:27:41
Pretty graphic depictions in The Arrival of warfare, dead soldiers, bombed out cities, totalitarian persecution, however. It's one of my favorite books, but might be pretty scary.

02:28:07
Library was my first favorite place when I arrived to this country.

02:28:49
what books would you suggest for Afro-Caribbean and Afro-Latin(a)(o) books?

02:28:59
Just did!

02:29:07
who wrote a different pod?

02:29:21
I just ordered them. Thank you

02:29:42
Francesca, it's by Bao Phi and Thi Bui

02:29:48
"The Arabic Quilt" is my favorite. Hooray for educators!!!

The ILC has a blog post featuring 50 books by and about immigrants, including plenty for young readers!https://www.ilctr.org/best-books-about-immigrants-and-immigration/

02:30:44
I love Amy Wong!

02:30:44
Thank you Sarah!

02:31:09
@Ciara I love Islandborn by Junot Diaz

02:31:31
thank you i will share this with parenting program

02:31:57
I love The Name Jar by Yangsook Choi

02:32:01
I love island born too

02:32:27
see Fredrico? You dont' have to SAY the word ... use the story.

02:32:52
Will we get a list of these books

02:32:55
Sofia Valdez, Future Prez

02:33:49
A book about a family coming to New York from Haiti is "La Fanmi Bonplezi" The publishing company EducaVision publishes books by Haitian authors in Haitian Creole and in English. Their aim is to support and promote Haitian writers in Haiti and around the world to publish their works, and to also be a resource for Haitian immigrant students in other countries. https://www.educavision.com/

02:33:54
I added many of these children's books in my summer list. Thank you for the including the list of books that have been "forbidden" - is there a place a can find more of these book titles?

02:34:35
@Hana Prashker We will post these slides with the books on the screen at: https://www.ilctr.org/promoting-immigrants/ilc-workshops/educators-hub/

02:34:39
I don't have the problem because of my role in the city. But teachers are getting fired and principals having to resign because they are using books that parents object to. Just yesterday another school principal was victim of this madness.

02:34:54
After reading "The Name Jar", I setup a Google slide for my students and colleagues. We now embed it during the first week of school.

02:36:06
carmen - there are a couple of places ... check out ALA web site https://www.ala.org/advocacy/bbooks

02:36:19
Can you name any books that specifically show the strengths that immigrants contribute to their destination countries?

02:37:36
How would you go about a student who say reads that (name jar) who wants to change their name back?

02:39:22
As a Korean American educator, I would cautiously say I prefer reading The Name Jar over My Name Is Yoon because the latter reflects some perspectives focusing assimilation

02:39:42
affirm key words to take away from this books is important

02:39:52
@Mihyun ... agreed AND it is a great book set.

02:39:53
Thank you for sharing

02:39:55
@Ciara. Even if you can’t quickly change a student’s name in the *system* you can begin by using her chosen name

02:39:56
I’ve had a few students who change the way they want their name pronounced year to year…I allow them to tell me how they want to be called and allow them to make the decision...

02:41:18
Linguistic practices and the normative of what kind of English is acceptable.

02:41:20
@ciara - help them in any way you can

02:41:29
I like so much "Where are you from" by Yamile Mendez, she touch a topic that for children and youth are painful

02:42:09
We need to challenge the view that there is one "standard" variety of English that needs to be taught and that only natives of that variety should be language and ESL teachers.

02:42:55
Thank you.

02:43:06
THANK YOU SOO MUCH!!!!

02:43:18

02:54:06
@Ciara Lee and Low also provides free teacher guides for many of their titles. I love Lee and Low!

As a 3rd generation Mexican-American, I had to learn my ethnic history on my own through the few books that were written by Chicanos. It is so exciting to see the large number of books on Latnos by Latinos. I encourage my students to read books by a writer that is of the race and ethnicity as themselves to become lovers of books.

03:10:16
Yes, Paula. Same goes for other marginalized communities (e.g. LGBTQ community). We want to amplify stories about LGBTQ characters that were written by LGBTQ.
