Hi there. Part of the K-12 math team at Limestone DSB. We made a screener and wonder how it compares, so we can improve ours.

I am an Early Years Coach with GEDSB. We are creating a Numeracy Assessment Tool so I am looking for ideas to help create ours.

ten years in K, this year in Grade 1 French Immersion. Hoping to understand how better to assess students early in the year to target areas for focus in small groups - have used Prime but not consistently
Janice Novakowski
18:16
Hi Janice Novakowski, DIstrict Teacher Consultant for the Richmond School District in BC and Adjunct Professor at UBC. I developed a district K-12 numeracy assessment tool four years ago for use in our district. I am looking to see what current research might inform any udpates.
Carolyn Trepanier
18:17
I am an SST at a K-6 school in Limestone and I hope to understand more about numeracy screeners and how best to use them- great to have another one to compare!

Instructional program leader k-8 math, HDSB - Looking to learn more about your work - what resources/research you’ve drawn from etc.
Marci Becker
18:32
Very interested in learning about the screener for early years in math. So often there are early years language screeners, less so in numeracy.
Klara Redford
18:35
Hi Everyone - I’m Klara and I work with Michelle McKay at developing and facilitating professional learning for early years educators specifically in Kindergarten. We have been working at providing space and time for educators can come together to reflect and talk about pedagogical instruction that supports success of our learners
Pricia Evans
18:52
K-8 math consultant at Limestone - and would love to learn more about your developed screener and next steps for students.
Shuyuan Yu
19:10
Hi! I'm Shuyuan, a phd student at the Ohio State University in developmental psychology. I’m interested in the development of math thinking. In this workshop, I'm interested in learning more about early math assessments and how to translate research into practice!
Sarah Crouch
19:49
I would love to touch base with others who have a numeracy screener/assessment tool that they are currently using!
Belinda Jackson
19:51
Hi, Student Support Teacher and grade 4/5 math teacher. Looking to learn more about using screeners to determine student needs/gaps.

Did I miss the link to the early math screener?
Klara Redford
01:41:06
wondering how using a screener in K supports the play based nature of the Program. Might we be able to use our professional knowledge of “noticing, naming and documenting” as a way to screen instead?
Michelle McKay
01:41:08
Highlights of our conversation: how this aligns with the pedagogy and philosophy of the Ontario K program, teacher support/PL for implementation (time, resources), the feasibility of implementation re: time in Kindergarten (not accessible), especially considering the current challenges in classrooms with staffing, etc., what this information will be used for - ensuring that the focus is on promoting skill development and notice and naming learning, as opposed to pathologizing children; how does this take into account how many student based on their intersectional identities face systemic discrimination
Nadine Osborne
01:41:16
Thank you Ean. My thoughts are the same.
Nadine Osborne
01:41:38
Thank you Michelle for posting on behalf of our group!

Is the screener in K needed more for the students who haven't seen this already in their play (as said above - noticing and naming their math with them and sharing with the class)
Stacey McDonald
01:42:23
Idea - Have students count out loud during play based activities - counting at the paint stand and then paint the number the counted to
Klara Redford
01:43:04
but if we truly know our students in K, we will know who is stuggling through play and inquiry
Erik Teather
01:43:39
Agree - perhaps the screener makes us aware of a few important mathematical ideas we may not realize matter so much?
Erik Teather
01:44:37
We've tried to spend a bit of time in number and spatial in K to notice and focus on
Klara Redford
01:45:05
how do these screeners remove bias and support our most marginalized students so they are not disproportionately "assessed" as struggling?
Nadine Osborne
01:46:35
Thank you for offering the workshop! The screeners may assist in developing observation checklists that align with scope and sequence of mathematical conceptual understandings/skills
