I have found that bringing awareness to systemic and cultural racism (https://www.opportunityagenda.org/explore/resources-publications/media-representations-impact-black-men/media-portrayals#:~:text=Media%20Portrayals%20and%20Black%20Male%20Outcomes%20From%20the,outcomes.%20The%20story%20can%20be%20summarized%20as%20follows%3A) and go against the grain is critical

Our young ladies face more disproportionate discipline in schools than our young men

Here’s an article that speaks to some of that…. Bias toward black and brown students https://www.npr.org/sections/ed/2016/09/28/495488716/bias-isnt-just-a-police-problem-its-a-preschool-problem%23:~:text=Implicit%20biases%20are%20just%20that,of%20generalizations%20regarding%20that%20information.

Sharing another resource: http://www.sdrg.org/presentations/Practice_Guide.pdf | The 5-to-1 Ratio is meant to improve students’ feelings of connectedness and positivity...By investing students in the value of the classroom through creating positive interactions, teachers can encourage better behavior and stronger feelings of student belonging in the classroom. Further, when students feel connected and more positive they are more likely to feel engaged and motivated to achieve academically. (How do we make sure our students, especially our black male students, have positive interactions at school?)
Adriane Simpson
48:11
Thank you @ Nataki!

I’m a black male and I made it through graduate school without ever having a black male teacher.

I am loving these conversations. Thank you. I work in Vermont (the whitest state in America) and am one of two POC at my school. I would love ideas about how we support our Black students, especially the male ones, if we don’t have Black adult male role models for them?
Esther Coleman
52:00
All of my teachers and the principal were black until they desegregated when I was in 7th grade. It was all downhill from there - not in a good way.

@Esther, I just read an article about the 1000s of African American teachers that lost jobs after desegregation. If the African American students weren't wanted in all white schools, one can imagine the teachers weren't wanted either.

That is exactly what happened, Keith. And most of the black teachers had higher degrees than their white counterparts. The black teachers were determined that we would learn proficiently. They knew what we would face.
