This event is being recorded for those who couldn't attend and for those who would like to share with other Veteran service and supporting organizations.

Veteran was sometimes thought to be one who served in combat. When I was younger, serving in the National Guard, I thought that I was not a veteran because I was not active duty nor served in combat.

In terms of Services does that include Bad paper discharges and Dishonorable disharges…?
Gina Bartoszewicz
45:43
VORP can enroll for services for anyone except dishonorable; we can still provide referrals to community providers/agencies
Rheanna Smith
51:02
We will send out a list of resources to all of you after this event.

Hello, I read a few months ago that mental health needs were now open to ALL types of discharges. I believe it is under the Commander John Scott Veterans Mental Health Care Improvement Act of 2019. Signed into law on 10-17-2020.

Rheanna, thanking you in advance for providing the list of resources. It will be helpful for me when working with my Student Veterans.

Great insights Gregory! Transitional period is always challenging.
Rheanna Smith
01:10:39
Gina, is the VHRP a program that is available across the US?
Gina Bartoszewicz
01:11:30
There are Grant per diem programs throughout the US, which is what VHRP is based on for funding

Rheanna Smith
01:24:31
Yes, Sandy, we (at Heroes) can get some more information and share that with you.
Rheanna Smith
01:25:13
Do Vets of color currently access mental health issues? And are you finding there are additional barriers for them?
Rheanna Smith
01:28:46
Let us know here in the chat if you are a Veteran or currently serving in the Military.

I was told that I don't need to see a therapist and to put it up in prayer
Gregory Burek
01:31:19
I'm sorry. That must have been very dismissive and invalidating
Gregory Burek
01:32:17
It makes it really hard to ask for help, when you get that type of response
Kari Metts
01:32:21
But I think that may be a challenge for veterans of color. At least it was for me. I still went and saw a therapist.
Kari Metts
01:32:51
Yes, it does. You become your strongest when you acknowledge your weakness and seek help.
Sandy Deich-Sauk County Veterans Service Office
01:33:10
Is it that Veterans of Color have access but not targeted care, some of this is in transition to feel they can connect
Kari Metts
01:33:25
My mom has always said that "a closed mouth doesn't get fed," meaning, if you don't ask for help, you won't get it.

Tony Glugla
01:41:00
Veterans from my experience do not ask for "help". It's not in our nature. It normally takes a spouse or employer that makes it clear we are not fitting into society.
Bert Berger, VA Milwaukee
01:41:11

We need legislation to provide funding to market the myriad of program available on TV, Radio, and Social. Over 50% veterans are unware of what is available to the according to a VA study.

01:43:17
Yes - we need to promote the benefits that Veterans have earned. The Federal Govt is not able to advertise so we need the community to help us!
Sandy Deich-Sauk County Veterans Service Office
01:43:43
Also we need to target famililes to let them what is available
Joseph Buhain
01:45:20
It is a shame that although Colleges have this, they do not recognize the culture of what it means. To them, it is a boxed check mark of just doing it. To much talk and not enough action. It would be nice to act on responses rather than just checking the box off. If you want to help the veteran community, act on it.

I agree also that they need more cultural awareness, cultural movement and identification. They need more people to speak about the information of being a veteran. Unfortunately, there is not enough support or the atmosphere is to be quiet or the word " Shame". Reality is, there are more vets that needs this awareness and support but society still has a stigma.
Gregory Burek
01:47:38
Agreed. Family becomes your new unit.

01:48:05

Gregory Burek

Some of the Resources are run by veterans and/or people who really care. But not nearly enough are
Joseph Buhain
01:50:22
Another issue is that most veterans have lost the unit concept. If we want to capture the support of the lost veterans and need help, we need to provide them the Unit Concept. I see many veterans who have left and are lost. Consider developing a Unit Concept Veteran
