Dr. Berwick, you note the importance of early childhood. Our early childhood programs are underfunded, poorly distributed and underused. With ~50% of US births now paid for by Medicaid, what should Medicaid’s role be in coordinating essential childhood programs beyond the repair shop … human services, childcare, WIC, etc.

Question: doing social justice work is a profile in courage. Often, social justice leaders lost their lives, personal freedoms and professional reputations. How do we convince academic medicine to speak truth to power structures despite the potential personal/profession losses. Thank you!
All the things you have mentioned as solutions are HUGE things that may happen at the leadership level (e.g. end hunger etc.) - My question is what can trainees such as myself do on a regular basis or our tasks on day-to-day, since as you said, none of this information is new.
