Our (lack of) attention to the 14th Amendment is a sign. Societally, do we really care about equity?

Agree, how do we get people to care?

Dr. Berwick, you note the importance of early childhood. Our early childhood programs are underfunded, poorly distributed and underused. With ~50% of US births now paid for by Medicaid, what should Medicaid’s role be in coordinating essential childhood programs beyond the repair shop … human services, childcare, WIC, etc.

Build small hot fires (ref: http://paulgraham.com/ds.html). As physicians our focus is also on fixing our own repair shop. As we develop our projects and practices this is where we need to focus.

Question: doing social justice work is a profile in courage. Often, social justice leaders lost their lives, personal freedoms and professional reputations. How do we convince academic medicine to speak truth to power structures despite the potential personal/profession losses. Thank you!

All the things you have mentioned as solutions are HUGE things that may happen at the leadership level (e.g. end hunger etc.) - My question is what can trainees such as myself do on a regular basis or our tasks on day-to-day, since as you said, none of this information is new.

Thank you for a wonderful talk, Dr. Berwick! What are your thoughts on ranking systems like US News starting to measure hospitals and health systems attention to health equity? What are the best ways to do this, and will it spur sufficient attention?
