We have a student at our school who fled Ukraine and is probably severely traumatised. His behaviour is problematic, for example he threatens other pupils and is sometimes violent. Due to the different language, communication with him is difficult. We are unsure how to deal with him and are sometimes overwhelmed. What would you advise us to do?

02:36:56
thatnks for that great advice

In the absence of a translator, a language translation app can be useful if people get comfortable using it.

I think the most important is a language connection. In Toronto, our education assistants were often recent immigrants who made personal connections with kids who had language barriers. They were laid off em masse many years ago-the remainder are now striking for a living wage). Perhaps to work out with the family, a strategy that allows him to withdraw to a place he feels comfortable when he is feeling emotionally overwhelmed. I knew a kid once who just walked themselves to the principal's office when they felt that way. They were not punished, but welcomed and allowed to spend peaceful time there.
