Couple of years ago a direct lightning fried dozens of our stations and servers. Last week another one fried an expensive atmospheric analyzer I have on a roof. We still create hard (i.e., removable disks) copies that are send out of the CITY for storage.

Should there be any mention of funding long-term storage? multiple back-ups and other redundancies are expensive and cost users money for as long as you need the data stored on them. Funding agencies often only pay for the storage during the duration of the grant.

Whose job is it? Where does this expertise come from? Do these people have the resources and support needed for the work?

We are planning on “outsourcing” our digital preservation as we do not have sufficient expertise. We are starting to digitise our herbarium collections in the National Botanic Gardens of Ireland and are going to collaborate with a national organisation that specialise in digital archiving to maintain the digital images along with metadata.
