Anthony Castillo
56:34
What supports or structures are in place for youth who stay home due to sickness?
Kathleen Mathews
56:59
My district has a Teacher of Quarantine that provides an hour after school each day on zoom
Colette Johnson-Thomas
57:19
absolutely correct, this is what has been happening.
Erika Cardona
57:57
Amen!! Not enough clarity around messaing and best practices for attendance during COVID
Anthony Castillo
58:37
Kathleen, how many schools is that teacher responsible for? Also on average how many youth does he/she serve on average?
Kim Baker
58:51

Sarah Frazelle - For students who are home, we offer several options. Often teachers will livestream their lessons, so the students can join from home. Teachers will also video their lessons and post them to Google classroom. They will post other associated learning videos to Google classroom. They correspond with students throughout the quarantine/time home to answer questions and offer support.

(From Maribel) Carley Murray - Our state requires a certain amount of seat time for course credit. We allow students to work in a study hall or tutoring environment to "log" the minutes that are needed to meet the seat time requirement. We also offered "seat time recovery" during the summer. This is used mostly for students who caught up, mastered the standards and passed the class, but still fall short on the required seat time minutes.

From Maribel: Balance between history of chronic absence and taking advantage of staying home: There will be families who take advantage. We can't help that. Sometimes we have to release ourselves from the "why" of the absence and really focus our efforts on the student and their academic needs. At the same time we don't ignore the signs... we will meet with parents one-on-one and have those hard conversations. Requiring seat time recovery also helps reduce it some, if you think someone is taking advantage because then we are still holding them accountable for the attendance.

Strategic Communication Plan: We use a lot of the resources from Attendance Works. They have a great kit that we use to do frequent PSA's to the kindergarten families. We make sure parents are hearing about the importance of attendance all the time and showing them the data that supports that - both national and local data. We talk about attendance during orientation, during parent conferences, within classroom communication, within school communication, within district communication - every opportunity we get.

Medical code: With the medical code, students are counted absent because we still want to track attendance vs achievement. It is excused, so it doesn't count against them when it comes to the consequences outlined in our attendance policy. We don't code it as "unexcused" because we want to continue to track those days separately as well. By having the extra code, it helps us know our students better, how we can support them and where there may be an alert.

Failure to do work during quarantine: Yes, if they fail to engage while they are on quarantine, they would be counted "absent" instead of "quarantined". BUT, they aren't off the hook for the learning and the work that was missed. Families know we are staying engaged and holding them accountable so they respond. We have only had one student who has and is continuing to do absolutely nothing, even after engaging with parents. Unfortunately, if we can't get him caught up, retention will be the likely result.
