@Chris, thanks!

53:37
Has the audience diversified since the orchestras diversified? If no, is that something orchestras work on?

57:02
@David, I know someone who was a violinist in the Colorado Springs symphony and they did outreach such as going into Title II (I think that is it) schools to reach lower socioecon groups. They had programs to help with cost as well. They also would perform music that was more broad than Beethoven. They loved what they did and wanted to share it with everyone.

"Learn American History"

02:36:47
Relearning history

02:36:49
Oh shoot

02:36:54
the making mistakes and learning from them was big for me. making a mistake involving racism makes me feel like i’m a racist, so it’s good to be reminded of that

02:36:57
What resonated with me was the comparison of “making Thanksgiving dinner”!!!

02:37:24

02:37:27
discomfort is cool!

02:37:38
resonating - importance of willingness to be uncomfortable. need to be explicit in expectations as a leader.

02:37:38

02:39:05
any first/quick resources to help us convince coaches (co-coaches, nearby coaches, etc) who DON’T currently want to “shift” their time/resources to these topics?

02:43:00
At a tournament once, we heard the parents on the sideline from the opposition team make certain comments about our team players' race/ethnicity. In that situation, what do you recommend we do for our team/player and for the ongoing game?

02:43:34
Our local organization has goals to increase diversity across BIPOC, socio-economic and gender. Since we are at that 'green bean casserole at Thanksgiving' stage, how would you recommend to attack this, i.e. target the most diverse community right off the bat (start a girls team at an underprivileged, high-BIPOC school) or start with a population that has more in common with the people getting involved?

02:44:50
@Dave I recommend checking out US Lacrosse’s Diversity and Inclusion Assessment Toolkit for leaders. It will help you plan strategically for your EDI efforts, https://www.uslacrosse.org/sites/default/files/public/documents/programs/diversity-inclusion-assesment-toolkit-for-leaders.pdf

02:47:01
what are the biggest barriers to retention?

02:47:12
From @bill: Do you have recommendations on how to recruit/encourage girls to join a co-ed team that’s currently all high-school boys?

02:47:18
Thank you!

02:49:25
For the tournament question, I would talk to the families to ask them to stop/ask them to not continue using that speech. If that doesn't happen or the speech doesn't stop, as a coach, I would stop the game with a timeout and address the families. If it still does not stop and players/families continue to be uncomfortable, I would stop the game and leave because the damage caused is not worth "powering through" if that is what the team agrees to. Either option, I would do your due diligence in reporting the incident.

02:51:20
@Matty, retention is tricky. A lot of it comes from being open to receive intentional feedback. Also, intentional recruiting/training of coaches who look like them. One of the most important coaching moments I ever had was a Mom coming to me and thanking me for coaching because her daughter finally had a coach who looked like her.

02:51:35
My two cents on recruiting/encouraging girls to join ^ have “bring a friend” practices, have womxn as coaches, host a GUM clinic, reach out to coaches of other girls’ teams to have an “ultimate” day

02:51:58
thank you all!

02:52:09
What barriers do you face in recruiting players from diverse backgrounds? What has worked for you in recruiting players from diverse backgrounds? What are some commitments you could make to create a more inclusive team environment? If you have had players from underrepresented groups on your team, what have you done, or could you do, to make them feel valued? When, or if, you have noticed microaggressions, what did you and/or the team do?

02:53:47
@Bill A big step would be to get female coaches. Also, there's "How to Coach Kids" courses and ones specific to girls.

03:15:12
i don’t remember my group number

Other barrier: It's so new to the area that there's just not enough players to start/barely enough players to get going.
