Jenny Monarch McGuire
43:44
Hey Rong. Yes, you can open the box now.
Jennifer Robertson-Honecker
44:59

Rong Huang

Ernesto Ordoñez
48:17
Each person can pin his video
Jenny Monarch McGuire
48:32

Jack Saunders
56:38
Should we build along?
Erika Bonnett
56:52
He is going to go pretty quick, but you can!
Lorrie Wright
57:31
Is this something the kids will do when we have our events?
Erika Bonnett
58:01
Yes. They will build them then, but you can take them apart if you want to practice!
Jenny Monarch McGuire
58:12
Are the participants supposed to build the rovers during this activity or is it best to have it built prior to do the activity with youth participants?
Erika Bonnett
58:40
Building the rover is part of the activity! It is great to let the participants build the rover!
Jenny Monarch McGuire
58:51
Good to know. Thank you!
Stacie Kinlaw
59:25
will we get the recording? I would like to have this as future resource when we are building
Gabriella Barrow
59:42
Yes the recording will be shared
Erika Bonnett
01:00:01
Yes absolutely! We are also working on How to Videos that we hope to release soon as well that will go over something similar for each activity!
Donna Motta
01:00:02
I agree! may we have the video for ref?
Robbie Morrison
01:00:13
Yes and if there are younger youth Spencer will give some ideas that will make it easier for them
Kelly Noack (Oregon)
01:00:26
Is this something that we could have ready to go for youth if we are limited on time?
Kelly Rose
01:00:53
Is the screwdriver included in the kit?
Reid Jaeger
01:00:58
yes
Erika Bonnett
01:00:59
Hey Kelly, you could, but I will say building it is part of the fun (and the part that the youth love the most when we tested it).
Erika Bonnett
01:01:06
Yes the screwdriver is included.
Robbie Morrison
01:01:15
It is a part of the activity the kids love to build it
Ann Marie Hall
01:03:49
Is there a rubric for the competition?
Erika Bonnett
01:05:06
Pipecleaner for the win!
Gabriella Barrow
01:05:08
There is a rubric. It will be shared via email soon.
Alicia Criswell
01:08:53
How much fun would it be to get microchips and code those rovers!?
Erika Bonnett
01:09:15
Tons!!! You can easily add an Arduino to this and make it automated!!!
Jennifer Robertson-Honecker
01:12:54
Yay!
Mark William DeMorra
01:12:57
this is part of the engineering process viewed live!
Alesha Vega
01:13:12

Reid Jaeger
01:14:45
I need to go now. Goodbye.
Ann Marie Hall
01:17:11
Do we need to give the kits back at the end?
Stacie Kinlaw
01:17:13
can we get the slide presentation to customize for local programs?
Erika Bonnett
01:19:00
We will send out the slide set, so yes, but we just ask that you give us credit for the original creation of the slide set!
Ann Marie Hall
01:19:43
Do we need to give the kits back at the end of the challenge?
Gabriella Barrow
01:20:28
No they belong to you
Sofia
01:24:04
How will this be played with social distancing?
Erika Bonnett
01:25:27
Gabby will be sharing it as well with this webinar recording!
Bodie Lierman
01:28:32
Someone is still unmuted
Alesha Vega
01:30:19
So there are two teams playing currently with each player having their own card? Is that correct?
Bodie Lierman
01:30:33
Someone’s Smoke alarm’s batteries are dead.
Kelly Noack (Oregon)
01:31:11
Great job!!
Chantel Wilson
01:31:15
SO they are choosing to play a little differently with their own module cards, but two people on the same team can share a module card and those played on the table to build canastas
Chantel Wilson
01:31:35
Otherwise, if playing one on one, they each have their own module card
Alicia Criswell
01:31:57
I’m thinking there are several different variations that could be used to play, especially depending on the age group of the youth.
Alexa Mitchell
01:32:17
https://4-h.org/parents/4-h-stem-challenge/insight-from-mars-activity/
Chantel Wilson
01:32:17
Yep! Just as long as everyone agrees on the rules beforehand! That is the important part!
Alicia Criswell
01:32:20
I think 8 year olds might struggle a bit to play as it is written.
Alicia Criswell
01:32:30
Haha! Very true on the agreement of the rules!
Alesha Vega
01:32:51
Great! Thanks everyone
Chantel Wilson
01:33:10
I've also encouraged youth to change the rules or build a new game using the cards and pieces included in the kit, but like a scientist, they have to be able to write repeatable directions that someone else can follow
Donna Motta
01:34:20
such great teaching everyone!
Stacie Kinlaw
01:34:27
I just want to say that all of the TEEN presenters have done a really great job! Virtual trainings are not easy for anyone
Alesha Vega
01:34:54

Facebook Live for 4-H STEM Challenge Save the DateNASA that two scientists out of the jet propulsion lab in CA are going to join us on October 14th at 4 PM PST (7 PM EST) for a Facebook Live Q&A. This will be on the 4-H Page. They’re producing a short 5-10 minute video using their Mars Trek and narrating some of the cool things we’ve discovered on Mars, places kids will discover during Mars Base Camp activities, etc. That video will be followed up by a live Q&A with Brian Day, science lead for NASA Solar System Trek, and Emily Law, project manager for planetary science at JPL.
