if we're compromising on away rotation spots/programs/etc., does that mean we should apply broadly for aways? seems like everyone shotgunning applications will make away slots even harder to get, and increase the burden on programs in selecting students to rotate

01:12:03
We’ll get there. Thanks Joe!

I accidentally came in 15 minutes late, but was wondering if this was addressed. - What if we’re not able to schedule an EM rotation/ Away rotation to get the SLOEs before applications are due?

Reach out to your EMRA Med Student Council Reps as well if you don't know who yours is reach out to your EM group leadership they should be in contact with them!

If we are in a state that allows students to volunteer in the ER, would you suggest doing this for experience since we might not get away rotations? And could we get a SLOE if we work with ER physicians while doing this? (applied for California volunteering and waiting to hear back)
Cassie DeWitt
01:28:18
Thank you so much for having this session. This relates to the SLOE question is there any advice for how many letter spots to leave open for a potential late SLOE on ERAS? Any advice regarding what types of other letters of rec to gather now in the setting of so much uncertainty?

Hello, thank you so much for hosting this meeting! I have a question/concern: most of us choose EM as a life calling and now more than ever, the field needs all hands on deck but med students right now feel very helpless and want to help as much as we can. Any advice on how to show our interest in involvement in the field and even contribute in any small way to lessen the burden on the field?
Abigayle Gama-Sosa
01:33:08
About what percent of applicants are orphan students? I'm just curious because I don't know of medical schools in my area who don't have a home EM rotation.
Paula Kreutzer
01:33:12
Our school is prohibiting us from getting involved in volunteering where we would be putting ourselves in harms way
Student
01:33:13
What if our program won't let us voluneteer in the ED?
Emily Ollmann
01:33:37
@Paula K. Our school is as well. Nothing is allowed that has potential patient contact
Alyka Fernandez
01:33:46
Most DO students do not have home EM rotations.
Courtney Elizabeth Hibbs
01:34:02
You can help with legal and policy efforts to protect vulnerable populations
Annette Maria
01:34:08
What if our schools not allowing students to have patient contact?
Maria Saba
01:34:10
IMG students do not have home EM rotations as well, but we can focus on volunteer opporunities
Hannah Hughes
01:34:13
Totally okay to not volunteer IN the ED. If you’re doing something cool to help, whether it’s through community health projects or EMRA, that may be a way to get a unique letter of recommendation that isn’t a SLOE but could help your application.
jennyastacio
01:34:28
HI!! Like mentioned in one of EMRA emails, the possibility of non-EM physicians writing a SLOE was being explored. Is this still something being considered?
Hannah Hughes
01:34:49
^Being addressed now
Jett
01:34:53
Just a suggestion. Health departments are fielding an overwhelming number of COVID related calls and may be looking for help in your area
itidus
01:35:01
Red Cross is also looking for volunteers, you can sign up for blood drives and other aspects like Disaster Action group (their term) that aren't exactly putting you in harm's way
Greg Ison
01:35:07
Could LORs from EM rotations without residency programs be viewed better than a LOR from a Nin
Greg Ison
01:35:18
from a NON EM rotation?
Jennifer Philburn
01:35:31
I was able to rotate in my base hospital but it does not have a residency program.
Taylor Campbell
01:35:35
We have Med Student initiatives to help our patients and providers that don't include patient contact, such as PPE drive and mask making, care packages for our physicians, telephone wellness checks on our elderly patients, telephone hotline with the Oklahoma State Department of Health, blood drives, etc.
Lara Samarneh
01:35:39
Organizing a group to baby sit for faculty is also really helpful
Courtney Elizabeth Hibbs
01:35:56
So many great things @Jett and @itidus Donate blood, Help you Public health departments with contact tracing!!
Jennifer Philburn
01:36:00
I was able to rotate in my base hospital but it does not have a residency program. Does this count as an orphan program?
maneesha
01:36:51
at this point, most of these volunteer coordinaton positions are being done by other students. If we can't leave the house, is it alright if we are just participating instead of coordinating in volunteer efforts like making masks?
L Tamara Wilson
01:37:02
If you have to get a letters from other types of physicians because you don’t have enough SLOEs, should they write a standard letter or a SLOE.
itidus
01:37:22
Med Supply Drive is a good PPE donation group, they have a great list of business suggestions for collecting PPE locally. I've been able to get a number of N95s from local auto body shops to donate to hospital!
itidus
01:38:21
Also, possible to make face shields from scratch at home, but supplies can take awhile to arrive
Jamie
01:38:41
Sorry if this question has already been asked-do you think an unfortunate consequence of increasing leniency in SLOES etc. will increase the weight that programs place on Step 1/Step 2CK to screen applicants?
Christine
01:38:43
Thanks everyone for your time! Is there any word if ERAS will be extending the due date for applications because of all of the clerkship delays?
Apre Gleaves
01:38:49
If you are coming from an orphan program and you have been shadowing with an EM physician not at your home institution, can they write LOR?
AJ
01:38:55
is now really a good time to remind attendants for letters?
Larissa Mugri

Early engagement of potential letter writers is good with the caveat that right now is really early and people are super busy with clinical requirements/COVID

Greg Ison
01:42:47
Any idea if the guidelines will also apply to combined EM program such as EM/IM or EM/Peds
Matthew Caviness
01:44:31
I am curious about the effects of the situation for those reapplying to EM, who may have more (although somewhat outdated) SLOEs than average. Also, I am curious if this will advantage re-applicants, graduates who are changing careers, or IMGs who could all have more experience or more proven experience than typical USMD/DO Seniors.
Hannah Hughes
01:48:00
Here are emails to the EMRA Board of Directors, including myself: https://www.emra.org/be-involved/be-a-leader/board-of-directors/
iPhone
01:48:48
Going off the comment above, can you all chime in on away advice for re-applicants?
Mohamed Hussein
01:49:04
Recent IMG from an orphan program here. I had a March away get cancelled and then I graduated right after, effectively closing the door on aways altogether. How can I sort of mitigate this ?
Sarah Newhall
01:49:38
Beyond those with “orphan” programs are there other things that would make you think someone would need 1 away rotation along with home sub-i?
AJ
01:49:47
can there be a part conference 2 for this topic?
Sarah Newhall
01:50:05
^^that
Hannah Hughes
01:50:15
I’m getting a number of questions from students you are IMG and/or reapplicants. I can’t respond live to all questions, but the EMRA Hangouts team can work on getting a dedicated session for special population advising.
Hannah Hughes
01:50:42
In the meantime, advice for residency applications in the setting of COVID will be covered next Thursday: https://www.emra.org/be-involved/events--activities/emra-hangouts/
abrahamakbar
01:50:42
Does the 2 SLOE / rotation limit also apply to subspecialty electives like ultrasound, toxicology, or EMS?
joelle brown
01:50:47
That would be great, Hannah. Thank you!
Elizabeth Le
01:51:03
Thank you @Hannah that would be awesome! IMG orphan here as well!
Hannah Hughes

cpari
01:51:48
What's the reasoning behind not doing 3 away rotations and getting those 3 SLOEs if we have the option?
Amit Boukai
01:51:50
An IMG specific session could be very helpful, Since away rotations are difficult to obtain as is as an IMG, and most of our programs are orphan programs.
Stephen Bower
01:51:54
If SLOEs are going to be downplayed in importance this year, what other application factors will be focused on by programs for interviews/rankings?
