You can make your own walls into whiteboards using 4' x 8' melamine boards from Home Depot for around $.40 per square foot. I did 2000 s.f. at my education center. :)

I’ve noticed a lot of kids need to go through a deschooling period in which they have a hard time self-managing.
Lisa Betts-Lacroix
01:00:07
Yes we should talk about deschooling!
Tiersa McQueen
01:00:22
Deschooling takes a long time! LOL
Charlie Davis
01:01:28
A great homeschool experience allows parents to redeem their education. It doesn’t just produce well rounded and highly educated students but better equipped parents.
Lisa Betts-Lacroix
01:01:36
Pahvi has a sister who was raised with similar freedom and is a successful college student (which is usually a concern for parents)

my husband and I have been teachers so we have some insight and resources. I have to say that I’ve been having fun with my kids. We are doing a lot of art and we are enjoying all the free stuff people are putting online. I think it feels like we are deschooling.

I've been using Zoom for my own education work with students, and there are alternatives, but they are not as high quality.
Mathew Crawford
01:03:43
But if you search "webinar software" you can find alternatives. I didn't see any with a free version, however, for basic usage.

Any experience training your kids in sports or athletic skills, as part of their education?
Robin Rheinbolt
01:06:43
My daughter is a blackbelt in karate and a competitive tennis player. Much more time to spend in sports. Great way to form character, discipline.

What are tools to “self monitor”?
Kirez Cash Reynolds
01:08:36
That’s awesome, Robin. (FWIW, I ran crossfit gyms, and have trained kids in crossfit, as well as gymnastics, Olympic weightlifting, climbing)

Anyone have success stories with math before age 12? What are the youngest ages using Khan Academy?
Robin Rheinbolt
01:16:47
Math - Great success with “Singapore Math” It is my daughter’s favorite subject. Self taught. All books bought from Singapore’s Ministry of Education.

I've found explicitly talking about the meta relationships with students very useful. As in making the relationship and the power dynamic an explicit conversation point "look, I'm here playing this teacher role. What does that mean? What does that make you feel?"
Lisa Betts-Lacroix
01:27:28
That is wonderful Yan!! Thank you for sharing this.

Once they become aware of it, you now have an ontology and you can talk about "it" as a thing.

I need to go, but I have a tip for the Zoom teachers:* The Zoom whiteboard is not the best. But if you get a Wacom screen or similar (some are only $300 now) to write on, then you can use whiteboard tools or even PDF Annotator (which can be saved to pdf files, which is nice). I find the results far better.
