Agree with the comment about personal ownership - sanitizing one's own transport places the onus for ensuring safety for co-workers, family and self on the individual, and that's a less frequent task when there's only one user.
Now would be perfect time while the streets are less busy also.

E-scooters may be able to revive struggling shopping strips like Bridge Road where parking is scarce and unaffordable.
It also will help PT reduce overloaded and car traffics on the roads
e-scooters need to be accompanied by AM and PM clearway zones on both sides of the road to make temporary bike lanes consistent and safe
It'd certainly let us move toward a greener Melbourne - especially if the car-free zone within the CBD were to ever progress (similar to the heavy polluter tolls in London)

Question - how do Lime or Raine see the use of hubs or other 'smart' locations for riders to safely lock their scooters outside shopping centres or hubs for 'pit stops' to outer suburbs. These could be great for recharge spots or swaps, with supporting cafes, ads, etc to cover costs.

eScooters and eBikes are good for local business too - research is showing riders spend 40% more time in local shops and spend more - overall turnover is up.

The environmental benefits of e-scooters is excellent. I’m a researcher in sustainable mobility and have seen data that shows its one of the most efficient vehicles to move an individual (even more efficient than a bicycle when you take into account the extra calories required to move it - although exercise is, of course, a good thing). I’ve spent my lockdown and prototyped an e-scooter with a solar panel attachment (save those 8 cents - and no need for the grid at all!).
I note e-transit has focused on inner city spaces and where the density is to ensure the base and trips are sufficient to enable opperation. My question is how do we take these solutions to the inner and out suburbs around those new town centres and mini cbd's where alternate transport is very limited?
Why are we treating escooters and eskateboards differently than bicycles? => where/how to lock up; riding on footpaths (bicycles only permitted on footpaths with children); helmet laws; riding on roads+speed regulations....
As a medical practitioner with a background in trauma, my concern relates to the hazard of sharing roads with cars as bicycles already face. The speed differential is the main reason for traffic flow disruption and results in sometimes unsafe passing practices - would the deregulation of power limits and the need to instead adhere to the posted speed limit in those circumstances be something for which there could be space in the proposed legislation?
Private ownership is a key solution in less dense suburbs. Bayside is a great area to commute to shops and transit - or cruise the beach
Moreland is doing some great trial parklets - allowing cafes to convert car spaces to community/cafe space
It also gets people out & about exploring their local neighbourhoods and subrubs, seeing new places they would have just gone past otherwise.
While the law may be easing and police turning a blind eye to scooter riders, I have heard of people getting large fines for riding them. How can we avoid getting fined during this transition period where the laws are struggling to keep up?

Heavier riders need heavier devices with more capable brakes for safe braking distances and to achieve stability while in motion.
Agree with Jon, weight shouldn't be limited like in Singapore because heavier devices are much more stable and confidence inspiring
wattage equals toqrue for getting up hills depending of the Kv rating of the motors
I have found most bike riders don't use a bell unfortunately

@Mandi, if, as Michelle suggests, you have a licence category for cyclists, skateboards, scooters with no age limit, you open up the regulatory space significantly.
Again, 25kph or under on a 50kph road is going to confer a higher level of risk for electric vehicle users when working around internal combustion vehicles
totally agree with you there Stephen :)
Bicycles exceed 50kph with only pedal power, let alone the 150+kph down a hill on the Tour De France.
