Elaine Tai
53:31
yes the hate causes me more anxiety than anything
Annie Dompe
54:48
one thing I've read in the context of COVID-19 is processing emotions while this is happening can help prevent them from becoming "stuck" and resulting in PTSD in the future
Annie Dompe
55:25
so kudos to moving forward with these services during these times!
Alicia Rodriguez
55:50
For Spanish speaking communities I change the wording because to most mental health they become insulted and say I'm not crazy I don't need that. So we use other terms. At least I do when promoting at Outreach events. Especially for communities I work at that suffer PTSD. Which no one really talks about. Low income family life, homelessness, not getting adequate services, living in areas with gang activity, etc. I'm concerned right now for those children who are now stuck in a home that may not be safe for them.
Alicia Rodriguez
56:27
Thank you Annie. Yes the processing of emotions.
Annie Dompe
56:34
Alicia, what wording have you found more receptivity with?
Julianna Robbins
57:08
I hope everyone has reached out to NAMI in their area - they are offering a lot.
Elaine Tai
57:17
yes!
Sally Thomas
57:25
I agree, Alicia. Domestic violence and child abuse are most certainly on the rise. It's great that you can modify your outreach approach so people feel more receptive to getting help.
Marie Plug
57:27
Women and children are experiencing upticks in domestic violence/child abuse during this time. Being stuck in a home with an abuser increases the incidence and severity of abuse.
Susan Martinez
57:31
To Paula...
Susan Martinez
57:56
We have an outreach team who does work with those experiencing homelessness.
Elaine Tai
57:57
will you be doing these virtually?
Elaine Tai
58:39
or postponing til later for all of these?
Marie Plug
58:51
Outreach is crucial. The library is not just a building, it is a living organism with many arms to reach those who need our services most.
Todd Deck
59:14
Yes!
Lucky Duran
59:21
Is there any help with getting free internet and/or computers to those in need?
Julia Tawney
59:25
Yes - mental health month is EVERY month
Katy Azevedo
59:35
Alicia - can you share more advice with us later? via email? somehow?
Julianna Robbins
59:43
our school district is passing out free chrome books and hot spots to anyone who needs them.
Susan Martinez
59:55
Comcast is providing people who are low income with wifi hotspots for FREE
Lucky Duran
01:00:41
That's good news? How about help with computer literacy?
Sally Thomas
01:00:45
I think isolation makes it harder to seek help, but a resource fair can make people feel like they aren't the only ones who are suffering during this period (even more so than usual).
Wenny Wallace
01:01:21
Yes
Lucky Duran
01:01:21
I meant that's good news!
Emily Odza
01:01:46
I wonder, and I’m sure we’re all wondering, How does Monterery Park plan to reach their community during this time (esp if people are not online so much?), to let them know about the services, etc.
Annie Dompe
01:02:34
Deborah is so good at anticipating the questions happening in the chat! Magic!
Archna Singh
01:02:42
isolation does make it harder to seek help, thank you for all the great ideas to reach out to people in need
David Greene
01:03:39
Deborah, this is all very inspiring. Thank you for your presentation. Thank you to all of the panelists for this program.
Alicia Rodriguez
01:03:46
I usually say if they need someone to speak with a professional about anything happening at home. we partnered with community health promoters who also help us. Promotoras you can read about the work they do at www.cdc.gov I also keep it real and I say mental health isn't about the stereotypes it is about your and taking care of yourself and your family.
Annie Dompe
01:03:47
yes, thank you for bringing up an assests-based framework! was thinking of this when Eastmont / East Oakland was being discussed
Susan Martinez
01:03:48
We have created impromptu meeting rooms with room partitions.
Susan Martinez
01:04:44
Yes, you can get some with built in white boards, too.
Julianna Robbins
01:04:45
Getting on boards, going to meetings, talking talking talking to people and potential partners. Deb is awesome because she’s in the networks!!! Yes, libraries connect and help other collaborate. Thanks for your great tips Deb!
Roy Park
01:05:08
Great partnerships/resources so far that any library could incorporate and emphasize.
Alicia Rodriguez
01:05:22
Yes that is also an issue to reach out to communities who do not have internet access.
Charmaine Mendez
01:05:28
Thank you, Deborah! Wonderful ideas!
Sally Thomas
01:05:33
That was a great presentation, Deb!
Lucky Duran
01:05:33

01:06:36
Lucky, totally agree that a TV program on how to use computers & the internet would be helpful.
Sally Thomas
01:06:56
I have CNN muted in the background now, and they are talking about domestic violence websites and resources, because of the surge of domestic violence incidents in this period.
Jillian Wilson
01:07:28
Thank you, Tanya! I will be contacting you. My email is jillian.wilson@cityofwatsonville.org
Lucky Duran
01:07:35
@Diane G. Let's do one! :-P
Alicia Rodriguez
01:07:44
I have the citizen app and lots of calls regarding domestic violence.
Charmaine Mendez
01:08:01
It's daunting to do cold calling or e-mailing, but it's worth it! Usually they'll say yes or say not now but perhaps in the future.
Julianna Robbins
01:08:18
it’s a crime reporting app
Elaine Tai
01:08:29
also good to talk to local activists. sometim4es they bring up less prominent groups
Elaine Tai
01:08:39
who are also doing more radical work
Sally Thomas
01:08:43
What is the citizen app, Alicia?
Annie Dompe
01:08:50
Elaine, agree!
Alicia Rodriguez
01:09:18
I partnered with a community organizer and she added me to their chat and private facebook group so I can share library information. They are mostly Spanish speaking and most have facebook.
Julianna Robbins
01:09:19
I think that’s great advice!
Alicia Rodriguez
01:09:32
