Hi Everyone! What are some creative solutions that have inspired you during the emergency meal service operations? Especially interested in food based innovations!
Love that Sarah. Great job.
Has your district starting creating plans for SY 20-21? What options are being considered? What contingency plans are you creating for the food services department? Please share any related plans percolating in your district!
great work Dominic and Team
Hi everyone! My name is Nick Anicich and I'm the Farm to School Program Lead with the CA Department of Food and Ag. So grateful to get these updates! Thank you for hosting Jen, Leyla, and Mickinzie!
The Governor was vary VAGUE on reopening.
As always, the Governor is good at thinking out loud.
worried that unions will expect more pay for coming back a month earlier, already exhausting fund balance. these have to be negotiated as always which could have longer delays
Hopefully all high schools will go back to two lunches, instead of one. The opportunity to not have all students out at lunch but only fresh/Soph and Jr./Sr. seems like it should be the new normal moving forward. I have floated the idea, but waiting on response, and change to opening. We are planning on Reopening early August, which was the original plan. The unknowns are funding and number of students we will have. Lots of challenges, but also opportunity for lots of solutions. Its what Child Nutrition does best, adapt under stressful circumstances. All the above may change in one week, who knows?
Well said Eric
has anyone in California found a potentially creative way to continue serving 3 meals/day during 'regular' summer school after June 30 waivers expire?
Great question Anna, I am sending weekly emails to USDA to extend the waivers until students are back in school
Holly Hungerford Cocking
“Prepare to improvise!” Is one of my favorite strategies.
I am also waivers are extended... it would be very difficult to revamp after june 30th or before school starts...
“Prepare to improvise” — I like that. It’s so true.
Thank you for hosting this helpful update
Feel free to type in any questions, comments or updates regarding advocacy work or needs!
Eric H. - thank you for sharing your process!
We need to be able to send at least one meal per day home with students when we return to school. and/or continue non-congregate feeding until social distancing is a thing of the past. We are looking at possibly having half the students on campus when we return.
thanks Meghan for your work in Washington
Who are our school meal heroes in Congress? (I.e. who are the reps that we know have our backs?)
Dr. Raul Ruiz, in my district is a big supporter
Pete Aguilar in Redlands/Fontana is as well
Yes, we need to push for UNIVERSAL meals for ALL students in 20-21
And how to collect money from the full-price kids, especially for meals sent home?
What discussions are happening on the national level about funding beyond June 30/after the emergency is lifted? Participation will most likely take a dive once school is back in session, whenever that might be, and expenses are only going to increase (esp. labor).
The CN Budget that I submitted in our school district is all based on ASSUMPTIONS of potential funding.
^ good call Miguel

Thank you Meghan!
Thanks for the clarification Jen on EBT funding.
Thank you, Meghan!
Thank you for this information! Do you have a link to the 10am webinar?
Here is the link for the Senate Ag Committee. The chairman is terming out this next election and will more than likely not get the reauthorization done before he leaves office. https://www.agriculture.senate.gov/

Thanks Gail! Can the translated by sent to all today?
Thank you Carolyn!!
I vote for the "Hey Directors, do what you can to feed the kids" Waiver.
Carolyn Wait Vega
As with all waivers, your state has to opt in, so check first!
I'll second that vote, Stephanie!
Good waiver, Stephanie!
@Marc Milton, great point, we're working we're working to make this a priority.
I already have it Stephanie, since day #1
Me too Michael! LOL
I will send my EBT translation to Leyla and Jennifer and they will be able to send out to all.
@jacqueline - Debbie Stabenow in MI and Bobby Scott in VA are friends of child nutrition
We were scheduled for AR 3/25 and are now looking at selecting a new date- no on site observation
Good Point Carolyn - States do have to opt in to the waivers!!
Hi Everyone: How are you dealing with uncertainty? What coping strategies have you developed? (other than wine)
If I could add a picture to the chat, I would show a picture of all the alcohol in my refrigerator right now. LOL
Holly Hungerford Cocking
My management team and I have a check in meeting every Tuesday morning, identify the safety focus of the week for training site staff ad talk about growing pains or concerns with this new program. We also have daily updates on meals served at sites to help track. We also focus on simplifying on what we are doing by keeping to out our 3 "S" operations- serving students, safety and staff
Holly Hungerford Cocking
I leave room in my schedule for crying.
Grace and flexibility is what I’m asking for....and giving...everyone is dealing with a lot right now!
Read "Mindset" by Carol Dweck
Marc - I love that book!
Stephanie - I get it. It’s not practical to go to the store multiple times right now anyway.
Love the book recommendations @ Marc!
Leslie… love the framing around 3 S’s. Thank you for being a great leader :D
I have to accept I am doing a lot fewer things at this stressful time.
Thanks Mickinzie! These are all great reminders for all of us.
https://www.apertifcocktails.com The menu changes weekly and is delivered to my door. @Leyla
I really love your leadership updates Mickinzie. Even us old Directors need a refresh and reminder. You always give me something new to do and be aware of. Thank you
Thank you for emergency meal service meal tool Kit!! That was extremely valuable during the first week of Covid-19 meal service. Talk about eliminating stress!
Thank you Mickinzie!
Please feel free to unmute yourself, or type into the chat box for discussion!
Bless you Irene!!! This is an apology free zone and we are all here to support you and everyone
yes this helps a lot and will they USDA and CA be addressing the non-congregate wavier soon... hopefully
I've reached out to our Board and asked them for support on our "prep" day, so send the teams pizza or lunches from our local community. Generally board members have a lot of contacts.... My CBO has been purchasing sandwiches for the teams during our "distribution" day. Teams love it.
Love your Disney background Steph, too. Was Mickey one of the celebs? ;)
LOL. I wish. I do have a cousin who is an exec at Disney, but I am very careful never to ask him for anything. I am missing my weekend fun at Disney. I usually go once a week...that is my stress relief. The biggest supporter of our program is a landscape architect from Beverly Hills. He donated $60,000
Thank you Brenda!!!
And pull your cal pads in May and June to check for CEP eligibility!
Thanks everyone for chatting and hanging out this morning!
Thank you everyone!
Thank you so much ladies!!
Holly Hungerford Cocking
