I came from academia before going to TV. Academia has it's own problems but at least I had colleagues of lots of different backgrounds. I find it so strange when I look around a TV office when I work and there is so little diversity. I'm a white immigrant in this country and as someone looking in it is amazing all the people who don't realise the subtle racism every day in the UK. The amount of times people complain about "immigrants" and when I point out I am one, I'm hit with "oh you don't count..." because people don't view me as one because I'm white. White people here need to call all that out. As said.... there is no balance in racism. much love to everyone sharing their stories.
It’s also incredibly problematic making an official report or complaint as a freelancer. You worry you’ll be frozen out or identified as undesirable employment wise.

On top of directly hiring BAME talent in top roles, would job-sharing ALL roles (with a specific mandate to welcome in BAME freelancers) start to approach fixing the divide?
I personally dont fill out the Diamond form. People have said I should but I feel like its an easy way for companies to act like they are diverse. Its more than just a form, maybe i should fill it out but i feel very anti about it
30 years ago (gulp!) I was in-house BBC Docs dept and part of a new Equality Opportunities Committee. We got the BBC to set up and run their Trainee AP scheme (essentially for directors) for women and for PoC. They ran them once (possibly twice) and then stopped. Just think how different the TV landscape would have been if the BBC had continued to support these schemes. Too many missed opportunities.....

I remember when I went for audition then they have given me the script on that day. I’ve read and realised they are looking for white deaf actress because the story was about a small village in Wales where no colour of people there. I am thinking why did they picked me up for this. After for a while, I realised they want show the diversity so they use me as colour and deaf person to tick on their list.
I have always felt that the TV industry requires programme makers to have the ability to walk in someone else’s shoes and help them to tell their story. But as an industry it fails to extend the same courtesy to those working within the industry.
Thanks Nadia - These are powerful and a scope for us to learn, we cannot empathise as we will never be able to understand. It’s time for us to focus on the issues and learn from them but also to steer away from tokenism. There are so many layers to unravel and learn from each of these. Hugs x

Yes, Elaine. Something that concerns me is that black creatives becoming an accessory for white voices on black matters. This is not uncommon. Inclusivity is fundamental. Hypervisbility is one of the most oppressive forms invisibility, to be seen and not heard. Now is the time to listen and learn, but not solely rely on existing staff to be the face of your call for action.
A colleague of mine at a job asked to create a POC group, they were shut down by white bosses. Who said it was racist and “we wouldn’t be allowed to have a white people only group” - shocking and disgusting. This happened in 2017
Highly recommend the podcast “About Race” by Reno Eddo-Lodge. Really powerful and informative. She also talks a lot about the lack of diversity in the media and complete refusal of any commissioners to talk to her/be held accountable.

I think that point about cross-broadcaster (and cross-indie!) collaboration being key is SO important. My experience of D&I networks and D£I strategy so far has largely been tinged with a really odd sense of competitiveness and benchmarking - “other companies are not doing this so that’s good as we can show we are ahead of the game/other companies are doing this thing therefore that is the only reason we should look into it - to keep up/save face”. I think this is just another form of performative allyship. we should be working together to effect systemic change. not trying to score points on other people’s trauma.
Schemes are often a way for broadcasters and indies to give themselves a pat on the back and their only means of dealing with the diversity deficit. Additionally schemes require follow up, you can’t just have people on schemes and then toss them out once it’s over. That’s how talent gets lost and falls through the gaps.
This is the problem - over the years there have been a plethora of schemes, initiatives, networking events but we are still in this situation which excludes so many. Time for the industry to be compelled to make change perhaps through financial imperatives which is a language they will understand.
I started on Creative Access, it was a good way through the door (for me), but it is problematic because of tokenism. I have almost always been the token ethnic minority in every development team I’ve worked at - development is especially bad for diversity IMO. We need more diversity at the top for those entry level schemes to make any difference.
Also check out Olive Morris whose efforts resulted in Squatters Rights being inserted in births law (1970’s)
I'm surprised at how many of my black colleagues have come through diversity schemes. I didn't it's made me feel 'different' in itself. Its scary, it wasn't until recently I realised this. Just that process alone I think also ties individuals to their mentors, it's then like you owe your career to someone, why are so many poc being asked to use the side door why are so few of us coming in through the front?

if we were fully diverse we wouldn’t need to think about how to “appear more diverse” - the keeping up with the jones’s between companies and channels is drowning out the genuine voices and needs of the whole industry
And none of the C4 commissioners were prepared to move, properly move, to Leeds
We only need to look at the language used surrounding the appointment of the new BBC Director General… “A Safe Pair of Hands” was quoted in pretty much every single article. The 17th DG and the 17th white, middle class man. Essentially enforcing the narrative that anyone other than a white, middle class man is a ‘risk’ to hire.
