Hi everyone! Miss you all!
You all look so cutie!
I think it's really important to know and share our history of las castas and our mestizaje. The rape of Indigenous and Black people by Spanish colonizers...so Europeans and light skinned mestizos on the top and Black and Indigenous folks on the bottom.
Do you all have tips/advice about bringing up racism in the work place. For example wanting to start a Diversity & Inclusion committee at work?
Totally agree with Amanda, most Spanish speaking countries have that same history. Dominican Republic has a very similar history to what Amanda is describing.
This is an extensive list of resources to combat anti-blackness. Many are in Spanish, so they’re great to share with family. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1a36vDwHEWr9qYnEUAVvbz6gAAl7UoI_MxLiDnPYOKpo/edit
Thank you for the resource, Beissy!
Thank you Beissy, great resource!
This has been an amazing intro session. Big lesson taken away has been that Race and Diversity & Inclusion is a marathon not a sprint. And we def need to keep the convo going!
Question: How can organizations like the MACC (Mexican American Cultural Center, part of City of Austin) support the BLM movement through programming and other initiatives?
Hi Olivia! I think it would be really cool to elevate our Afro-Latinx brothers and sisters in the MACC's work. And make a public statement in support (I'm not sure if you have already?)
Great contributions, thanks so much! I will take these ideas back to the MACC team
I was late, so sorry for the late question, is there any movement around education on buying power?
volunteering, donating to orgs, mutual aid efforts
The budget will be presented to Council on Monday and there will be a 3 day public hearing in response
Communities of Color United has a script and helps folks figure out how to engage in public testimony
Thank you Amanda!
Thank you all for your work! Take good care.
Thank y’all for this amazing session!
Thank you all for your hard work!
