The Global Coalition on Inclusive and Safe Spaces and Cities for Women and Girls comprising 5 organisations – Jagori (India), Safetipin (India -Global), Huairou Commission (Asia, Africa), Women in Cities International (Canada); Red Mujer y Habitat (Latin America) reaches out to several partners across Asia, Africa, Latin America and Caribbean region and North America. We are closely associated with UN Women’s flagship programme on Safe Public Space for over a decade and are a Member of the Action Coalition Leadership group on ending Gender Based Violence.

The Coalition works with several stakeholders - students, collectives, women in the informal sector, migrant, homeless women, trans and queer women, survivors of violence, transport workers, police, legal officers, men’s groups, health system, private sector, technology companies, theatre groups, artists, so as to ensure a coordinated and a coherent approach and outreach to transforming rights and entitlements for women, claiming their equal citizenship, and ensuring freedom from violence and harassment.The Coalition members have substantively contributed to research and data collection, development of innovative perspectives and tools, in many different sites and countries. These tools have been adapted by grassroots groups, government and other stakeholders.

1. Kalliopi Mingeirou is currently the Chief of the Ending Violence against Women Section at UN-Women in New York. She has been leading global initiatives and responses to ending violence against women and girls, including the Action Coalition on GBV, representing UN Women as one of the leaders of the Action Coalition.She is a lawyer by training and holds an LL.M. on public international law. Prior to joining UN-Women, Ms. Mingeirou worked as a lawyer in Greece, and at the International level, she worked for UN agencies, as well as INGOs, in the areas of human rights, women’s human rights and refugee protection in several countries both in development and humanitarian settings.

Huairou Commission – a global women-led social movement of grassroots groups from poor urban, rural, and indigenous communities in over 45-countries in Africa, Asia Pacific, Europe, Latin America & the Caribbean, and North America, with over 120 grassroots & facilitating NGO organisations, who collectively work for transformative change that improves the living conditions, status, and quality of life of women, their families and municipalities.

Dr. Barbara Holtmann: Barbara is the President of the Board of Women in Cities International, Canada and Founder of Fixed. Africa. She has worked in community development and safety for more than 20 years, with a focus on collective, collaborative action to solve complex social problems. She has developed the ‘What it Looks Like When it’s Fixed’ systems model and methodology as an outcome of her doctoral thesis enables clarity of purpose and effective collaboration where there are many diverse stakeholder needs, views and inputs in a development or transformation setting. In 2010 Barbara founded Social Transformation System as a consulting firm to apply her insight into the complex social systems to a wide range of problem solving contexts. Barbara has a PhD in Management of Technology and Innovation by thesis “A Strategy for a Safe South Africa”.

Maria Teresa (Maite) Rodriguez Blandon: Is the Programme Coordinator of the Guatemala Foundation. She has over 20 years of experience on gender, sustainable development and peace issues, having worked on the issue of women’s participation in conflict resolution and ending violence against women in scenarios of armed conflict. She is the Coordinator of Women and Habitat Latin America and Caribbean Network. The Women and Habitat Network was formed in 1989, to advance the development of knowledge and actions related to women’s right to land, housing, and the city.

As a trained architect-urban planner, she is involved in data analysis, representation, and formulation of recommendations for creating safe public spaces. She has co-authored the policy brief on Women and Transport in Indian Cities. Sonali believes in working hand-in-hand with the government and non-government stakeholders to bring positive change in the social environment of a city.

Shruti Batra is Project Manager - Research and Knowledge Management with Jagori. As a researcher, trainer, organiser, she has a wealth of experience on safe and inclusive public spaces for women and girls and has successfully brought gender concerns centre-stage in citizen campaigns - Main Bhi Dilli (I too am Delhi). She is passionate about rights of women domestic workers and ending violence against women.Urban issues, policy research, advocacyinitiatives on SDGs (5, 11) are her key interest areas. She has been a fellow with the South Asian Network to Address Masculinities. She has a Master’s degree in Development Studies from Ambedkar University, Delhi. She is a poetry enthusiast and writes on feminism, resistance and peace.

JagoriTool: Open Street Audit Mapping (OSAM)OSAM is integral to Jagori’s community engagement and advocacy process and has been used for over 7 years by women across the low-income communities Jagori and the women’s collectives work in. The Community Engagement Process has several steps:i) Creating an Informal Space – Chaupals - for diverse women to discuss issues of right to the city, mobility, safety, livelihoods, services and last-mile connectivity. While they are led by women/girls, men/boys are also encouraged to participate. Safety audit data is collected in digital and manual forms.ii) Women mapping their areas with audit checklists through manual and digital forms -with the Safetipin App.iii) Women identify unsafe spaces, with poor infrastructure - lighting, pedestrian pathways, etc.

iv) Key findingsare shared with local service providers/authorities and monitor their responses.OSAM is held in a public square to display the datain an interactive mannerwith service providers, local authorities and citizens. Lana Louise Finikin is a Founder Member of the Sistren Theatre Collective working on gender-based violence and crime prevention since the last 42 years. Her work is focused on social change, through community mobilizing, organizing, analysis of possible solutions to gender based violence. Lana is a grassroots activist with extensive experience of engagement with the UNCommission on the Status of Women and CEDAW, to bring about law and policy reformson gender equality and women’s empowerment. She is a staunch advocate of the Habitat and the New Urban Agendasto improving safety, security and living conditions of women in urban and peri-urban poor communities; as well to ensuring governments work with grassroots women to formalize and expand their public leadership in local planning and decision making.
