May I ask a question? Are all ovaries that size or just polycystic ones?
June-Ann Joseph
20:40
What's the difference between pcos and pco? And can you be diagnosed pco and not pcos?

That’s amazing
Fran & Jon Hunt
32:23
No wonder it’s so hard to lose weight with PCOS!!!
Alice - The Lowdown
32:25
Isn’t it
Lala Keilty
32:25
Does this cause bloating?
S Davis
32:31
Wow!
Alice - The Lowdown
32:49
In case you missed it - women with PCOS have to eat 4% less or exercise 20% more in order to stay the same weight as anyone else
Ellie Pearson
33:11
Good question Lala, I always have bad bloating problems and I’ve wondered if it’s connected to PCOS
S Davis
33:38
Thanks for explaining this in such a great way! I always end up bloating and fobbed off as it being IBS
Laura Barlow
34:46
what are some other symptoms of these metabolism problems?
Alice - The Lowdown
34:46
Will make sure we come back to bloating!
D G
35:51
What about pcos later in life after 35 years
Samantha Newnham
35:51
That's surprising, I was told when I was diagnosed as a teenager that I should have kids young as it was my best chance!
D G
36:13
I started getting irregular periods after 35 before that I was on the dot
Ellie Pearson
36:42
I’m 18 and have had irregular periods all my life, now on the pill :))
Katherine Crabb
36:55
Do you also look at diet and lifestyle adjustments alongside tablets and injections to support/encourage ovulation?
Hannah
38:01
what is the role of metformin in women that aren’t overweight?
Francesca
38:43
How can symptoms be managed without the combined pill for those of us who can't take them e.g. if you get migraines
Helen Keighley
38:59
How can you tell if you have insulin resistance?
Laura Pusey
39:02
Are different types of combined pill better for PCOS than others? What are the best kind?
Erin Walsh
39:22
Sorry if its been covered can we talk about seeking a diagnosis
Poppy Harris
39:33
What is that medication called that induces the period?
Katherine Crabb
39:46
Are PCOS symptoms such as hirsutism, acne etc. exacerbated during pregnancy or post-partum?
Rebecca Foster
40:28
Like Katherine I’m very curious about the experience of PCOS whilst actually pregnant - skin, hair falling out etc?
S Davis
40:51
I was told pcos can impact bone and teeth strength? Is this true
Charlotte Russell
41:22
For those of us with a normal BMI, what other options are there to manage symptoms?
lydia
41:42
I‘m on metformin + duphaston (basically artificial progesterone to trigger ovulation) to treat my PCOS. It helps me to have a regular cycle, as I didn’t want to go back on the pill.
Rebecca Stanier
42:41
Can you please talk about difficulties getting diagnosed and what test to ask the doctor for
Alice - The Lowdown
43:56
Yep sure!
Ellie Pearson
44:01
As an 18 year old who hasn’t had issues with weight, I’m unsure whether I will have this problem in the future or not. Maybe I haven’t seen issues yet because I’m young and have higher metabolism?
Sarah Balmer
44:21
When you talked about storing food if you skip a meal, is that people in general or more so people with PCOS?
Chloe Bird
45:06
can we hear some info on depression and any links to pcos?
Fran & Jon Hunt
45:41
Hi Rebecca - ask the Dr for PCOS bloods, should be FSH, LH, estradiol, testosterone, serum sex hormone binding globulin, free androgen index. You might also get thyroid levels and prolactin depending on symptoms. Some women can be diagnosed on symptoms and bloods alone, others need an ultrasound scan to look for the follicles on the ovary
Alanna
47:32
Do you feel theres a link between PCOS and eating disorders?
Ellie Pearson
49:08
I was just thinking that Alanna! With the weight issues and methods to manage it…it sounds like one could easily get into a restrictive and disordered eating pattern.
Sarah Reading
49:15
Why do some have poly cystic ovaries without the syndrome?
Laura Barlow
49:30
Alanna - I was just thinking that. if a lot of advice is to loose weight, the advice needs to be nuanced and not encourage disordered eating
Ellie Pearson
49:52
Sarah there are other factors that make it PCOS. poly cystic ovaries just mean you have poly cystic ovaries without the other factors.
lydia
51:18
Alanna - in my experience, strict or extreme diets have worsened my PCOS. We need to keep in mind that with too little food, ovulation is one of the first things that your body shuts down.
Ellie Pearson
51:33
Yes Lydia!
Lizzie Edwards
52:04
I’ve had a scan (had cysts) and have irregular periods but don’t have an increase of male hormone. My doctor said I had pcos but do you think I could just have pco?
Ellie Pearson
52:15
Is anyone an adult who now struggles with weight gain due to their PCOS but never did when they were younger? (if you don’t mind sharing)
Ginnie Clark
52:23
What great slides, so clear. Exciting research developments.
Chloe Bird
52:31
hi Ellie, I do
Francesca
52:33
Yes Ellie
Alanna
52:40
Oh Lizzie - I'm the same!
Poppy Harris
52:40
Wow that’s amazing research!
Olivia
52:41
Yes Ellie
Charlotte Russell
52:49
very clear slides & exciting research!
Chloe Salt
52:56
yes ellie, me
Chloe Bird
52:57
I was a size 8 at 19 and now I'm a 16/18 and CANNOT shift it
lydia
53:05
Yes Ellie
Ellie Pearson
53:17
Oh okay interesting, thank you for your replies!
Lizzie Edwards
53:22
Good question Ellie, I’m worried about that
Chloe Bird
53:25
I'd really recommend Verity
Ellie Pearson
53:58
what’s verity chloe?
Lizzy Welsh
53:59
This has been so helpful! Thank you!
Francesca
54:32
Verity is the PCOS charity
Chloe Bird
54:34
Ellie, it's a charity set up by women for women with pcos. they run conferences (or they did pre covid) and they are so good with specialists there. there's so much info on their website
Sarah Balmer
54:46
I’ve been diagnosed but have only had increased androgens from a blood test and facial hair growth. Periods are regular. No scans. Should I request a scan?
Ellie Pearson
54:54
Oh, thank you so much! I’ll check them out.
valerie pearce
55:07
is there a link with PCOS and acne and if so what is the best way forward for the acne?
Chloe Salt
56:18
is there any medication I can take that isn't contraception? I have been on the mini pill for 2 years and it has stopped my period completely
Holly Nicholl
56:23
I’m exactly the same Chloe, size 8 until 20, and now at 30 16/18 and it’s just not shifting
Chloe Bird
56:35
I find the only time I bloat is when I actually ovulate.
Ellie Pearson
56:56
i get really bad period bloating now im on the pill
Sarah Balmer
56:57
What is the difference between increased levels or testosterone and increased levels of androgens?
Sarah McCann
56:58
I’d really recommend joe wicks app for PCOS. It’s the one mainstream exercise and diet app that actually considers PCOS in its personalised plan
A J
57:22
I'm the same, Chloe and Holly now I'm in my 30s! I hear you!
Erin Walsh
57:24
Are there any hormonal contraceptives that people with pcos should avoid?
Sarah McCann
57:24
It sounds cliche but I have tried everything and it’s working!
Holly Nicholl
57:34
Nothing Sarah, testosterone is the main androgen
Chloe Bird
57:48
thank you Sarah I will check it out
Sarah Balmer
57:58
I’ve been told I have normal testosterone but high androgens levels
Chloe Bird
58:47
A J we will get there 👏🏻
Holly Nicholl
58:49
It might be that you have more of other types of hormone?
D G
59:00
So its the testosterone that is high if you have PCOS? Please correct me if I am wrong
Alice - The Lowdown
59:15
Anymore questions on weight?
lucy gould
01:00:09
would it be possible to talk a little more on the ED/PCOS link?
Katherine Crabb
01:00:12
That's interesting on the 5:2 Diet as I've seen Intermittent fasting recommended for combatting insulin resistance
lucy gould
01:00:16
what is the reason for that?
Olivia
01:00:49
Can you test for insulin resistance?
S Davis
01:00:54
should people with pcos avoid high intensity training
A J
01:00:58
We will Chloe! <3 Thanks for the advice re: Joe Wicks, Sarah. I've been thinking of joining, more reason to now :)
Chloe Bird
01:01:37
it's honestly so nice to talk to everyone about this, I don't know anyone else with it and I feel alone sometimes.
Rebecca Foster
01:02:01
Would you recommend Spironolactone for hair loss/ acne?
lucy gould
01:02:05
I was thinking that - we should try to maybe create a group or forum?
Ellie Pearson
01:02:08
I have another question on weight… I’m a young person who has PCOS but never had problems with large weight gain, but I do have a history with disordered eating and a bad relationship with working out. I’ve gotten past it now, but I’m worried when I start to have weight gain with PCOS as I get older that I’ll fall back into my disordered eating pattern. Do you have any advice on how to manage that?
S Davis
01:02:17
I agree, thanks all this is great!
Alice - The Lowdown
01:02:27
We’re going to set up a forum at The Lowdown on PCOS if you ladies would find it helpful?
A J
01:02:32
A group would be fab!
Alice - The Lowdown
01:02:35
I can contact you all and create a WhatsApp group
Chloe Bird
01:02:38
Alice yes yes yes!!!
Fran & Jon Hunt
01:02:40
Hi Lucy - Spironolactone is very similar to the progesterone Drospirenone which is found in COCPs such as Yasmin or Lucette - it might be worth looking into those first?
lucy gould
01:02:42
that would be so amazing
Francesca
01:02:51
Yes alice!
Lucy Grieve
01:02:54
Yes!!!
annabelle
01:03:02
amazing! yes
Laura Pusey
01:03:10
Are different types of combined pill better for testosterone-related PCOS than others? What are the best kind?
Raffaela Johns
01:03:28
Are there any supplements that you would recommend that may help with PCOS symptoms? I have found my symptoms have exacerbated after the birth of my son
Rebecca Foster
01:04:30
Thanks Fran - I’m already on Lucette, it was worked wonders for my acne and my mental state, my hair is still on the very thin side though and doesn’t grow- so wondering if would Spironolactone work in addition?
Olivia
01:04:34
How can you manage symptoms such as facial hair, acne without the pill/hormones. Have lost weight and now just above normal BMI and symptoms are still bad
Dr Fran - The Lowdown
01:04:52
Hi Laura - all COCPs are good for PCOS but if you are really struggling with testosterone related symptoms eg hair and acne, at The Lowdown we recommend Lucette, Yasmin or ELoine
Alanna
01:05:06
Has anyone heard of the PCOS Protocol from Clare Goodwin? I'm considernig it so would love feedback if anyone has?
Chloe Bird
01:05:24
I was on millinette for 4 years (recently off due to weight gain) and honestly I think it's a wonder pill. never got spots, headaches, etc. and tbh the weight gain was down to my lifestyle at the time.
Vanessa Tracey
01:05:25
If paused eggs in PCO aren’t quite cysts, how do cysts in the ovaries form and why are some women more prone to them ?
Holly Nicholl
01:05:30
I’ve heard of it and I follow her on Instagram alanna
Holly Nicholl
01:05:40
She has released a book recently I believe
lydia
01:05:44
Is there any known connection between urticaria/hives and PCOS?
Laura Barlow
01:05:53
Ellie - could you ask your GP for a referral to a nutritionist? particularly one with ED experience/awareness?
Lizzie Edwards
01:06:23
What about hormonal coil??
Ellie Pearson
01:06:44
Thank you Laura, I’ll do that.
D G
01:07:13
Is it dangerous to have cysts in your body?
Alanna
01:07:42
Thanks Holly, I'm the same with following her on instagram!
Poppy Harris
01:08:00

A J
01:08:57
I'm on Dianette and it's worked for me
Poppy Harris
01:09:02
Are there any natural remedies for PCOS that are used in medicine?
Laura Pusey
01:10:29
Thank you Fran and Colin!! That’s what I thought - but I swear every time I look at a pill that maybe better in terms of PCOS there’s some other annoying symptom associated ... !
Alanna
01:10:45
Oh, and the other side of hair - hair thinning and PCOS related?
Lizzie Edwards
01:11:09
I’m on the Mirena coil, will that beokay for pcos?
Ellie Pearson
01:11:38
We should just normalise hairy women guys haha!
Laura Barlow

Sarah James
01:13:48

Holly Nicholl
01:13:49
Thanks so much, very informative
Ellie Pearson
01:13:51
A few people have replied to me in the chat but I’m wondering if Colin has any advice so I’ll repost it … I’m a young person who has PCOS but never had problems with large weight gain, but I do have a history with disordered eating and a bad relationship with working out. I’ve gotten past it now, but I’m worried when I start to have weight gain with PCOS as I get older that I’ll fall back into my disordered eating pattern. Do you have any advice on how to manage that?
Holly Nicholl
01:14:16
It’s similar to glucose
Poppy Harris
