HVTN702 : A WEBINAR BY AFRICANS FOR AFRICANS
MANAGING HOPE - HOLDING SCENCE TO ACCOUNT.

WEBINAR HOSTED BY THE VACCINE ADVOCACY RESOURCE GROUP AND APHA (ADVOCACY FOR THE PREVENTION OF HIV AND AIDS)

The Vaccine Advocacy Resource Group (VARG) and APHA (Advocacy for Prevention of HIV and AIDS) acknowledges the developments from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), to stop administration of vaccinations in its HVTN 702 clinical trial of an investigational HIV vaccine after an independent data and safety monitoring board (DSMB) found during an interim review that the regimen did not prevent HIV. This news is disheartening but we believe that even this trial has provided valuable data and contributed to the ever increasing pool of knowledge along the road to find a vaccine for HIV. It is also encouraging to learn that the DSMB has not expressed any safety concerns for participants who took part in the study. Advocates will continue to advocate and agitate for an HIV prevention research sector that is truly driven by communities where the research takes place and continue to hold science to account, to push for meaningful and honest engagement and transparency which is critically lacking in far too many trials. We center, we salute and we honor the 5400 mostly black South Africans who made this trial possible. Their commitment to journey towards an effective, affordable and accessible HIV vaccine is testament to the resilience South Africans have towards ensuring an end to new HIV infections, despite the social challenges we continue to face.

The webinar will bring together African community advocates, stakeholders and HVTN702 leadership, in a discussion about what the discontinuation of HVTN702 means for the field, and to reinforce the need for sustained advocacy and protection of the field to ensure that the funding, the drive and the resilience of HIV vaccine science emerges stronger than ever.
