Ludwig Hilberseimer (1885–1967) is considered one of the leading theorists of New Building and of modern, functional urban planning in particular. His image shapes our perception of the architect, town planner and teacher to this day. His later developments, which began at the Bauhaus Dessau in 1928, have for a long time received comparatively little attention. The conference focuses on the entirety of Hilberseimer’s work. When discussing the various aspects of the discourses on the city of the future that he has helped to shape the theme of infrastructure serves as a kind of leitmotif, which reveals the paradigmatic character of Hilberseimer’s life and work during the first half of the 20th century. The conference is part of a research project “Bauhaus im Text” by the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation dedicated to developing a historical-critical edition of Ludwig Hilberseimer’s book The New City.
