In this 1.5 hour workshop, you will learn how to use a healing lens to help mentees transition to in-person learning in the fall. This past year has brought many challenges to our young people including economic instability, remote learning, and racial unrest. As caring adults supporting our young people, we will need to come prepared using a trauma-informed approach to guide them with the transition and any stress they may be facing. Mentors will help students returning to the classroom adapt to change by offering coping skills and resources to help mentees become resilient and thrive.
After this workshop, participants will be able to:
--Identify challenges and barriers and how they relate to young people’s transition back to in-person learning.
--Discuss multiple aspects of trauma-informed care, coping strategies, behavior modification, and positive relationship building.
--Apply learned information to assist mentees in a variety of settings.
About the Presenter:
Dara McDowell, MS, MFT is a marriage and family therapist with a passion for helping marginalized people obtain healing and hope. Dara is from Philadelphia, PA. She obtained a Bachelor of Science in psychology from Tuskegee University. From there she worked in the Philadelphia School district as a school therapeutic support. She then obtained a Master of Science in Marriage and Family Therapy from Capella University. She has worked in private practice, community mental health and private agencies. Dara has experience working with clients from diverse backgrounds. Currently, she is a doctoral candidate at Drexel University where she obtained a strong social justice background. She also has numerous published articles with a focus on substance use, African Americans, mothers, historical loss and intergenerational trauma.
